"I'm not...Lily," I said with air quotes, my voice thin but firm. "I'm her daughter-in-law." I shifted my gaze to mother to see the expression on her face and she was...smiling?
Rita arched an eyebrow, a smirk tugging at her lips, "Well, well," She said, her gaze drifting from me to Chris and back again. "Aren't you a lucky man, Chris? Your new wife is quite the looker,"
I felt my skin crawl at her words, my hands balling into fists under the table. Chris shifted uncomfortably in his seat, his expression tight. "Thank you, Rita," he said, his voice cold. "We're very happy together." Ugh Did he just lie to her? We both knew that none of us were happy about this marriage.
As Rita listened to Chris's response, I could have sworn I saw something dark flicker in her eyes, a flash of anger like lightning in a stormy sky. Her hands curled into fists, her nails digging into her palms, before she smoothed her expression back into a smile.
