Chereads / The Jackpot System / Chapter 4 - Awakening

Chapter 4 - Awakening

When Eirik's uncle left after he visited him in the prison, he didn't let his words occupy his mind. He wanted to be in his best state of mind when he Awakened on his birthday.

"It will soon be midnight and what surrounds me is just pure darkness..."

Even if the current environment he was staying in wasn't the best, he still hoped for a successful awakening. At least he didn't want to get the Useless Class.

Eirik sat down under the only opening with the moonlight inside his jail.

While being bathed with the moonlight, his body started to glow. It started from the heart of Eirik and soon it surrounded him.

Sensing that something was happening, Eirik opened one of his eyes.

"Wow! Watching on the internet and in documentaries is really different from experiencing it firsthand."

Knowing that his Awakening would soon start, Eirik resumed closing his eyes.

On this day, other than Eirik, other people experienced being surrounded by the light. However, there were some people who's light dimmed as soon as possible. They were the people who failed awakening.

When the clock around Eldoria reached exactly midnight, and a new day started, countless 20 year olds seemed to have gone into another dimension. The surroundings were all white and the sky was black.

Among them was Eirik standing out dressed in his conspicuous prisoner attire. It was a bright orange overall cloth.

When the other people saw him, they immediately started distancing themselves from him.

"Why is there a prisoner? Isn't he just 20 years old like us?"

"He must be very dangerous since he was jailed before he reached the legal age."

"Awakening really doesn't choose who to awaken."

As Eirik heard their words, he opened his eyes.

"What the heck! Is this the group Awakening that rarely happens?"

Usually, Awakening happens like a trial that the person who gets to awaken needs to pass. Depending on the result, the person's Traits and Class will be determined.

However, if they woke up or disturbed in real life the chances of ever awakening one of the best Class diminished. That's one of the reasons why most people rent isolated, soundproofed rooms or choose an environment they are most relaxed in. In case they fail, the only Class they will receive is Useless Class.

Seeing that many people were looking at him, Eirik realized that he was the only one among them who was wearing a prisoner outfit.

"Hopefully, they will forget about me once this Awakening Trial finishes."

Not long after, the attention of all the people present in this other dimension went towards a big roulette that appeared in the sky.

"We're lucky. This is the roulette trial. We just need to spin the roulette and we will be able to get our Class and Attribute!"

"Roulette trial?"

This was the first time Eirik heard about it. The usual trials he heard about are the Elemental Gauntlet Trial, Staying under the waterfall for a certain period of time, treasure hunting and many more.

The fact that the roulette trial was not known to the public, it must be extremely rare.

Before the people started lining up, there was already someone who finished spinning the roulette and it stopped on the Top Class.

"He is so lucky! I should've gone first!"

"I was the nearest to the roulette just now, why couldn't I be the first one?"

"I wish I spined the roulette first."

Believing that being one of the first ones spinning the roulette gives a better class and traits, people rushed to line up.

Eirik also wanted to be one of the first ones but when he saw that the 3rd and 4th one didn't receive any significant good Class, he just lined up wherever was available.

When he was the only one remaining in the whole Dimension, soon he was surrounded by gold coins and casino games.

"What the heck! What is happening?!"

[Trial for the last one standing:

Get a jackpot on one of the Casino Games before the gold coins drown you.]

"A sudden trial? And did it just say? Get the jackpot? Do I have any luck left?"

Having recently just won the Lottery, Eirik believed that he already used up all the luck needed to win another jackpot.

Deciding to try his luck again, Eirik went to the nearest Casino Game. He picked up one of the Gold Coins and started spinning. However, like he expected he didn't get the jackpot in the first try.

"Sigh, how long will I need to play in order to get a jackpot?"

For the next few hours, Eirik spent the whole time trying to get a jackpot. When he wasn't satisfied with the result of the first machine, he tried another one.

He continued doing that until he finished trying all the Casino Games.

"Fck! When will I get a jackpot and finish this trial?"

Now the gold coins piled up could already reach up to his knees. Fortunately, the dimension was quite large so he was far from drowning beneath the golden coins as he played.

"What time is it?"

Eirik looked towards the time written at the corner of the casino game. It was already 2:28 am.

The only problem that Eirik faced was time. He had 5 hours left before the warden started distributing the breakfast, so he needed to finish this quickly.

When the Warden arrives to give him his breakfast, he might get disturbed and wake up in the middle of his awakening. When that happened, he had failed the trial.

Having found a new kind of motivation, Eirik began to play the Casino Game. This time, he chose to stick to only playing the current Casino game he was playing. By doing that, he could spend the time playing rather than using it when he changes to another casino game.

Doing such a repetitive task was quite boring. No thrill or whatsoever.

"I would prefer something more challenging than this repetitive task. I haven't done anything other than pressing a button and putting a gold coin on the machine."

Eirik really hoped that he could soon get the jackpot. This boredom was killing him.

"Hey! Trial administrator, can't you give me something more challenging than pressing a button?" As if someone had heard him, his surroundings changed.

"Damn! I was just joking, don't take it seriously!"
