All of a sudden, it all began to make sense.
If Daniel could feel his every impulse without even consciously being aware of all his lifelong memories, then why wouldn't Damien feel the emotions of Daniel in the same way?
Of course, it was easy for him to forget about this, given that the dominant personality remained the same as the old Damien, given just how abnormally twisted it was.
But at the end of the day, both sides of his previous personalities had a significant influence on their unified self. Even the Editorial Interface Application described it as a perfect fusion, after all.

As he realized that he had to accept Daniel's feelings in the same way that Daniel had accepted him, the discomforting feeling in his chest slowly subsided, leaving only a dull pain behind.
