Chapter 13 - Chapter 13:"Rules of dress"

Wilhelm's school did not have a mandatory school uniform policy, though it did have a weekly uniform day where students could choose to wear a uniform if they wanted to. The school, however, was very strict about the length of pants or skirts that the students were allowed to wear - they had to be an inch below the knee, whether in private or school uniform.

The school Wilhelm attended was an old school with strict traditions, especially on matters of dress. It believed that it is respectful to dress smartly out of regard for people. Therefore, dressing in very short clothes, just like a back-packer's dress, was impolite.

These were rules that Wilhelm and his friends were familiar with, although they at times found them rather too limiting. "I hope we can dress however we want," Sebastian said one afternoon during lunch break.

Wilhelm nodded graciously. He remarked thoughtfully, "Freedom in dress would be nice indeed." "I think the institution bases these rules with a good reason, though."

Lena chipped in. She shared, "I feel some dress directives highlight the seriousness we attach to our learning. They reflect our admiration for the school too."

Sofia nodded. "And it isn't like the rules are that strict. We can still wear nice clothes as long as they're not too short."

Wilhelm and his friends accepted that the rules were not too hard to live with, and they did understand why the school had them in place. Indeed, they knew dressing properly was part of the responsibilities associated with being a student and respecting one's school.

As lunch was finishing up, Wilhelm and his friends nailed down plans to meet up after school to hang out and have a little time for a sporting activity. All of them were looking forward to changing out of their school uniforms into something a bit more comfortable.

It was Friday, and therefore the school had its weekly uniform day. Wilhelm was ecstatic that he didn't have to spend a second every morning deciding what to wear, much less the crazy ones. He was so used to the ritual of putting on the same thing every Friday.

Walking one morning to school with his friends, the conversation turned to the many restrictions at school. "I think it's good that they don't allow too many unneeded valuable things in school," Sofia said. "It's not like we need to show off our wealth. We're all here to learn."

Sebastian simply nodded. "This rule about no cell phones in class is fair. Cell phones create distraction and disrespect."

Lena entered the conversation. "I enjoy the lockers the school offers. These lockers store our mobile phones. It shows they want our safety and education."

"I know that some students may find them somehow boring or annoying, but I find them really necessary for a good learning environment," Wilhelm added.

Arriving at school, they could see all their classmates in uniforms. Feeling a sense of unity with all the other students, knowing that they were under the same rules and expectations, Wilhelm felt a part of it.

In the whole school day William had a sense of productivity. Distractions such as valuables were absent. Cell phones weren't used fruitlessly. He was aware of the rationale behind restrictions. William was grateful for the repsentative efforts by school. The effort in creation of a secure and efficient learning environment was recognized. Safety and quality of education enhanced.
