"Is the signal in this place?" Anton parked his truck near some cabins to have better control of the area.
Akira looked at the map and nodded. The epicenter was near this location, so there was no way they were in the wrong place.
According to the reports, everything would reset once the systems restarted, but they still didn't have everything certain. Therefore, Anton whimsically went on a solo mission with Akira, leaving behind the team that had been deployed in the afternoon.
"What exactly are we looking for?" Akira was a bit tired of doing things all day that she never thought she would do, and although she was prepared, it was still hard for her to keep up with other people.
Anton looked at the cabin and said, "Something big entered the Earth from space. Those are the latest data we have, but we still need to observe more closely in case we notice anything strange in this area, which is the closest to the epicenter of the impact where people are located."
"In this place?" Akira looked around and noticed nothing.
"A few months ago, a commando team faced an unknown thing on an elimination mission. They weren't ours, but whatever killed them might have some connection to what we will find here."
Anton wasn't sure what he would find here, but he still wanted to know if what was found a few months ago had any connection with the probes being emitted here.
"Something is emitting the waves that affect the sensors. The epicenter is here, so the clues will lead us to what we're looking for." Anton took Akira's hand to enter the cabins.
"Are you the ones who booked so late?" An old woman stood at the door and greeted them with a rather unpleasant look.
"Grandma, sorry to bother you so late, but our honeymoon was ruined by a coup on Machu Picchu island." Anton smiled friendly, not caring what this old woman thought.
"I couldn't care less about your vacation. You can use the last cabin, so don't bother me anymore. Damn, I had to stop watching my Turkish soap opera because of you."
Akira was stunned by the old woman's behavior and asked, "What's her problem?"
"That woman is a retired veteran. She only joined the elimination command because her family was killed. However, she retired after forty years of service and luckily lives here." Anton took the luggage from the truck and walked toward the cabin.
"Wouldn't it be better to investigate first?"
"There are drones monitoring this area. If anything happens, they'll alert us." Anton walked toward the cabin, where he planned to drink and sleep until night.
It had been a long time since he drank, so today would be the day to recover. At least now he had Akira with him to prevent him from doing something crazy like in the past.
"Well, I'll take my stuff." Akira walked to the back of the truck and took out a black box containing her modified bow, explosive arrows of different types, and a customized combat suit.
Everyone working for the Light Association has the right to a well-maintained suit, especially when high-performance agents are involved.
Besides, they had to adapt to any type of combat to avoid being at a disadvantage against anything trying to harm the world they live in.
"Let's drink, Akira. I have some good alcohol for tonight." Anton was holding a large bottle while dancing.
Akira closed the door, smiled slightly, and said, "We need to go to bed early since tomorrow we must investigate the nearby town."
"A drink won't kill anyone. This will be our celebration."
…
Early in the morning, Anton was awakened by the alarm Akira had thought to set so they would get up early.
"God..." Anton opened his eyes, feeling groggy from the drink he had the night before. He wasn't proud of drinking, but the feeling was certainly pleasant enough to erase many of his worries.
"Do you want to shower first, or should I?" Akira had also woken up.
"You go ahead. I'll read the report and know exactly what we're looking for in this place." Anton got out of bed, walked to the table, and took the computer.
"[Classified extinction-level files.]"
"Aliens? Damn it, how the hell was something like this hidden from me?" Anton wanted to destroy the computer that had the alien in the images he had received.
Grabbing the phone, he immediately called his father, and when they answered, he shouted, "Dad, you know I respect you, but you shouldn't have hidden something this big. What the hell? I guess now we're facing the Covenant."
"Wasting time with nonsense on TV again?"
"Hmm, forget it; tell me what is emitting the signals." Anton became serious, seeing that the situation was as serious as an extinction event.
"Listen carefully, son..."
