Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: Breaking In

Dawn: "Hey, you two alright?"

Elias and Warin then looked off to the side where Dawn's voice was coming from. Dawn was approaching with the others.

Warin: "Yes, we are okay. Sorry for being late."

Elias: "We got information that I think will be helpful."

Dusan's eyes widened.

Rhys: "Really?" He seemed shocked.

Margit: "What is it?" She immediately perked up.

Elias then filled everyone in on what Mr. Riley had shared with him and Warin. Elias spared no details, making sure that every single detail was known. Especially his theory that Oliver not only killed Dawn's parents, but his parents as well.

Dawn: "I figured there would be more to the situation, but I did not expect that. Are you okay, Elias? That isn't exactly something that must have felt good to hear."

Elias: "I am fine... I just want to be sure before I get too emotional about it. I don't work well with emotions."

Rhys: Even in a moment like this, Dawn is still worrying about others before himself. How does he manage to do it?

Margit: "I am really sorry to hear about all of that.." She truly looked sorry for Elias.

Elias: "It is okay. I have had time to let their passing sink in, plus, I've always had my suspicions. The likelihood of them dying from the same disease on the same night... sounds fishy to me. That being said, now isn't the time to sulk. We have a mission to complete."

Dusan: "Correct. I am sure I speak for everyone when I say that I am thankful for that information, but we still need to find a way to prove it. We can go search my home, this time of day my father is out tending to his duties. Although we have time, we must act fast."

Rhys: "I for one am on board." He stepped forward. "Without evidence our claim is nothing."

Dawn: "Well it sounds like our only option is to go snooping. You are sure about this, Dusan?" He eyed the guy down.

Dusan: "Honestly, I have been ready to do this for years. I am tired of protecting my father, and this seems like a golden opportunity."

Rhys: "Could not have said it better myself, dickhead." He walked up to Dawn after passing Dusan. "The real question is, are you ready?"

Dawn: "Absolutely." He said as he met Rhys' eyes with a look of determination. He was ready to find the closure he had been searching for, for the past ten years.

Rhys: "Well then," he stepped back, "are we all ready?"

The group gave a unified answer. They were all ready to find the evidence that would put Solart City's Chief away.

Upper First: Kauko Estate grounds

After walking up to the luxurious Upper Third, the group marched to the one building that would house any evidence to support their claim. The Kauko Estate. A beautiful building, consisting of three floors of above average size. By no means was this the nicest home in the universe, but compared to what the six of them had grown up around, this was the most incredible piece of architecture imaginable. Large marble pillars held up the front of the mansion, and the group was greeted with double-doors that were taller than every last one of them. Dusan, of course, let the group inside of his home, but once they were inside..

Dusan: "That's weird." He said as he looked up. "The lights are usually on when the maids are working. Not only are they off, but usually there is a maid that greets visitors."

Elias had walked across the grand foyer, admiring all of the expensive artwork that lined the walls that towered over him.

Dawn: "What are you trying to say, Dusan?" He was staring at the floor that had some sort of abstract pattern he had never seen before.

Margit was standing next to Dawn as if she were using him as her source of protection.

Rhys: "I think he is trying to say that something doesn't seem right." He was standing next to Warin, who was flipping a lightswitch on and off.

Warin: "It seems like the power is not working at all."

Dusan: "Well to me this seems like a perfect opportunity to check my father's office. No power means the security cameras are not working."

Warin: "I can only imagine having security cameras in my home..."

Elias: "These paintings must have cost a fortune-"

Rhys: "Guys." He snapped. "We are here to find evidence, not admire artwork and overpriced technology."

Dawn: "Hey Dusan, is that part of the design?" He pointed out something on the staircase.

Dusan: "What do you-" He looked to where Dawn was pointing at. It was dark enough in the foyer for him to need to get a closer look. "No. This is blood." His tone got more serious. "We need to hurry. Something is definitely wrong." He then started to walk up the stairs.

The rest of the group followed him up the stairs and around a corner. Dusan led them down a hallway that was painted in white with more expensive paintings lining the walls. Elias couldn't help but to look at them all.

Dusan: "Alright, behind this door is my father's office. Once we are inside, look anywhere, but look quickly. We are on a timer."

The group gave him collective nods as he opened the door that led to the office. As Dusan opened the door he was met with a sight that none of them were expecting.

Margit: "I-Is that..?"

Warin: "I think I'm gonna vomit.."

In the middle of the office floor, Oliver Kauko's body lay lifeless, blood stretching out from behind his torso. A clear stab wound was directly over his heart, blood staining his white shirt. This stab wound was accompanied by several others, scattered across his chest and stomach. Dusan hesitated before walking over to his father's corpse, crouching down to get a closer look.

Rhys: "Dawn, I don't think we are alone in this house." He said directly to Dawn, low enough so the others didn't hear.

Dawn: "I agree." He responded at the same volume.

Warin looked away from the scene, actively gagging. Elias decided to walk over to Dusan, also looking at Oliver's corpse.

Margit: "T-This is awful." She said as she took a couple steps backwards, holding her hands over her mouth.

After scanning over his father's corpse, Dusan finally stood back up. As he turned to face the group, tears fled his eyes.

Dusan: "If you still want the evidence you can look, but I'm going to find whoever did this. Join me if you want." He said, holding back his voice from collapsing on itself as he walked out of the room.

The rest of the group looked at each other.

Elias: "Whoever did this is going to have the answers we are looking for. I would also like to find them." He said as he stood up, walking after Dusan.

Warin: "I can't look at this anymore, so I am going to go with them."

Margit: "Dawn?" She looked over to him.

Dawn: "Yeah... let's go." He said as he followed after Dusan without any hesitation.

The rest followed as well.

Rhys: "Everyone hold up." He said as he stopped walking. "Listen."

The group stopped walking, and as they stood in the hallway, they succumbed to silence. A faint walking sound could be heard from around the corner they had turned a few minutes ago.

Dusan: "Who is there?" He said firmly.

???: "Oh no... no this isn't good." One voice said.

???: "Nobody was supposed to be here at this time. I know for certain we killed everyone who was in here already."

Two men in bloodied cloaks then turned the corner, standing at the end of the hallway.

Cloaked Man 1: "Who might all of you be? We didn't plan for this.."

Cloaked Man 2: "Look there, that one is the Chief's son." He pointed at Dusan.

Cloaked Man 1: "Hey, you're right! Might as well finish off the bloodline in one day, huh?" He cackled.

Before the man could react, Dusan was running at him.

Dawn: "Shit!" He exclaimed as he ran after Dusan, towards the other cloaked man.

Cloaked Man 1: "You little shit." He said as he weaved out of Dusan's path, taking out a dagger and thrusting it at Dusan.

Dusan avoided the dagger, it was a basic attack with no real backing. The man clearly underestimated Dusan.

Dusan: "RAIDER SCUM!" He said as he grabbed the man's arm, and twisted the dagger out of it. The item then fell into Dusan's grasp.

As Dusan got the upper hand on the acclaimed raider, Dawn has made it to his counterpart. The second raider jumped back as Dawn swung a fist directly at his stomach. Unlike his partner, this man was not underestimating Dawn.

Cloaked Raider 2: "You've got quite a swing, kid!" He said as if he was excited. He then drew his dagger, dashing forward towards Dawn.

Instead of avoiding his approach, Dawn stood his ground which caught the raider off-guard. Dawn then took his left hand, quickly diverting the dagger that was rushing towards his body away from it. He then drove his head into the raider's. The clashing of skulls was a rough one, but Dawn expected it. Taking advantage of this moment, he took his right hand, swinging it into the raiders skull after it had bounced off of his own. Before the raider could stagger, Dawn thrusted three more punches and a kick into his body, causing the raider to cough up blood from the sheer strength being pounded into his gut. The raider then fell back onto the ground.

Cloaked Raider 2: "Damn you-" His words were cut off by another bloody cough.

Dawn then adjusted his stance as he looked over to Dusan. Dusan had successfully eliminated the other raider, his dagger used against him. Dusan had pushed the dagger straight through the raider's skull.

Dusan: "Good work, Dawn." He said as he faced Dawn. Dusan's clothes were dirtied by the blood of the raider he killed. "Thank you for keeping that one alive, I got a little carried away." He did not seem to be the least bit phased by the act of murder he had just committed.

The rest of the group stood many steps back from the two, trying to process what they had just witnessed.

Rhys: "Hey Dawn," he said with a shaking voice, "seems like all that practice paid off.." He said in an attempt to lighten the mood.

Dawn: "Yeah. It certainly did." He said before facing the raider again, glaring down at him.

Cloaked Raider: "You gonna kill me too?" He questioned. "Didn't know you kids were killers!"

Dusan: "They aren't." He said as he stood next to Dawn.

Cloaked Raider: "Oh? But you are?" He started to laugh as blood dribbled out of his mouth. "The Golden Boy is a killer? I guess he is now!" More laughing followed.

Rhys: "Golden Boy? Only people who go to our academy know that nickname.." He walked closer with the rest of the group.

Dawn then leaned down, removing the hood the man had pulled up, revealing a student in Dusan's class. The guy his father had asked him to give that letter to. Elliott O'Neill.
