"The threads of secrecy began to unravel, and the whispers of truth started to echo through the shadows."
Chapter # 05
9:00 am
It was June's morning in Prazay, a bustling city in Markotophia. Just like other mornings, people of Prazay seemed to be busy with their work.
In the KF area of Prazay the crowd of patients at the clinic continued to grow, some got an appointment today and someone was waiting for their checkup and to get the next appointment.
Everything was going as usual in the clinic. A girl with red curly hair entered the clinic, clutching a folder in her hand. Her hair was neatly tied in a bun, and her small black eyes complemented her tanned complexion. A faded mark resembling a burn scar adorned her right cheek. She wore a cream-white top paired with a grey pencil skirt.
Approaching the reception desk, the red-haired girl lightly tapped her fingers, grabbing the attention of the girl manning the desk. With a smile on her lips and a weary look in her eyes, the receptionist inquired, "How may I assist you?"
The red-haired girl leaned in and innocently asked, "I have an interview for a job. Could you please guide me to the designated room and the person I need to meet?"
The receptionist arched her eyebrows and scrutinised the red-haired girl from head to toe. "Do you have an appointment letter or any message?" she asked.
In response, the red-haired girl swiftly retrieved her mobile phone and presented the screen to the receptionist. Upon verifying the Email, the receptionist proceeded to type something on her computer.
Adopting a softer tone, she asked, "May I know your name?" The red-haired girl smiled and replied, "Kara. My name is Kara Lavees."
After glancing at the computer screen, the receptionist instructed, "Please take the elevator to the second floor and turn left. You'll find Dr.Danielle's office . Dr. Danielle will be conducting your interview. Good luck!"
"Thank you so much," the red-haired girl replied with gratitude, her voice filled with hope. She followed the receptionist's instructions and made her way to the elevator. As the doors closed, she took a deep breath and tried to calm her nerves. This job interview meant a lot to her, as it could be her ticket to a better future.
The elevator ascended swiftly, the soft music and dim lighting creating a soothing ambiance. The red-haired girl mentally went through her resume and prepared herself to impress Dr. Danielle. The elevator dinged, announcing her arrival on the second floor.
She stepped out and turned left, carefully reading the room plaques until she found Dr. Danielle's room. The door was slightly ajar, and through the opening, she could see a woman sitting behind a desk, engrossed in paperwork.
Summoning her confidence, she gently knocked on the door before stepping inside. Upon receiving a response of "Come in," she pushed the door open and entered.
The office exuded an air of professionalism, yet it also felt warm and inviting. Soft lighting cast a soothing glow across the room, while shelves lined with medical reference books and family photos gave it a personal touch. A desk cluttered with papers stood as the central focus of the room, where Dr. Danielle was engrossed in writing with a pen on a notepad.
Catching sight of Kara, she set the pen aside. A warm smile graced her face, instantly putting Kara at ease. "Ah, you must be Kara. I've been expecting you. Please, have a seat." the doctor said warmly and gestured for her to take a seat in front of the table.
Kara reciprocated the smile, feeling a sense of reassurance in the doctor's welcoming demeanour. She took a seat in the comfortable chair opposite the desk, ready for the interview. As Kara settled into the chair, she took a moment to observe her surroundings.
"Please show me your documents and reputation certificate." the doctor requested. Bowing her head, Kara opened the folder in her hand and placed it on the desk and straightened her posture, ready to make a good impression.
After carefully examining the documents for a few seconds, the doctor looked up at Kara and remarked, "Miss Kara Lavees, your qualifications and reputation seem satisfactory. However, your experience falls short of our requirements."
Kara looked at the doctor and then the documents, Kara responded, "Ma'am, everyone at my previous workplace appreciated my work. I never gave them a reason to complain."
"Yes, but you only worked there for three months." Doctor immediately interrupted.
Kara insisted, "But ma'am, during those three months, I performed my duties flawlessly. Please give me a chance, and I'll do my best." Her eyes brimmed with hope. Dr. Danielle shook her head resolutely, "Miss Lavees , our clinic employees are highly skilled professionals. We can't hire someone with limited experience solely based on their clean record from a previous clinic."
" Sorry, I'm late " In the middle of their conversation, a man in his fifties entered the room without knocking. Dressed in a white shirt, black dress pants, and wearing a gold watch, he took a seat beside Dr. Danialle's chair. He too carefully observed her documents .
" Sorry Miss Lavees! We can't hire you " Danielle said
Kara glanced at the man who was sitting beside Danielle and then at Dr. Danielle "Ma'am, please give me a chance." Kara started to plead
Dr. Danielle sighed deeply, "Miss Lavees , this clinic is under my care, and my patient's well-being is my responsibility. Your lack of experience could pose a risk to their safety " she stated firmly.
Tears welled up in Kara's eyes as she said, "Please, ma'am, I truly need this job. Just one opportunity is all I ask." The man sitting beside Dr. Danielle displayed a sympathetic expression, while Dr. Danielle remained stern.
Overwhelmed with emotions, Kara continued, "Please, ma'am, I'm going through a difficult time with my ex-husband..." Before she could elaborate further, Dr. Danielle firmly stopped her, halting her hand in the air. "Please don't share your personal problems here,"
Kara lowered her gaze, conceding defeat. As she rose from the chair with a pained expression, the man seated beside Dr. Danielle intervened, "You can wait outside in the waiting area to find out if you'll be given a chance or not." His words left both women taken aback. Dr. Danielle pursed her lips and Kara looked at the man for a few moments, as she realised what he just said, a glimmer of hope lit up her face. Kara smiled and gathered her folder and silently exited the room.
As Kara left the room Danielle immediately turned to him "What was that, Dayylam? Why did you say that? You know she is inexperienced," Dr. Danielle questioned, frustration evident in her voice. "She does not have enough experience, so, how can we keep her here as a nurse."
Dayylam took a deep breath "Danielle, didn't you see how much she needed a job, how she was begging you. Maybe she is going through a difficult situation, moreover she is skilled, you should give her a chance," he explained, his tone was sympathetic.
Dr. Danielle's throat tightened with bitterness. He is her husband and the owner of this clinic, why does he make such stupid decisions just because he has compassion for women? "I know you set her up for the interview, otherwise it was clear in our advertisement that we need an experienced person."
Dayylam just exhaled a breath.
" Why do you sympathise with women? Don't do this, Dayylam. You don't know some women cry and beg like this just to get a job. They just play Damsel in Distress to get what they want . You can't understand the mind of women, Dayylam. This habit of yours..." she trailed off, her frustration was palpable.
Dayylam gently pressed her hand, his voice filled with understanding. "I know you are a woman, so you understand women well. But Danielle, I just want to say if that girl is begging so much, then you should give her a chance." He lovingly fixed strands of her grey hair on her forehead, trying to calm her.
"You put her on a one month trial. If she does the job well, keep her, otherwise, fire her, and that's it," Dayylam suggested, hoping to find a middle ground.
Dr. Danielle looked at him, her expression softening as she considered his words. After a moment of contemplation, she nodded. "You're right. I should put her on trial. Let's see how she performs. "
" It's evident that she has the potential to be really good at this " Dayylam commented
" Hmmm " Danielle just hummed in response
Outside the room, Kara found herself on a seat in the waiting area. Kara sat there, her mind filled with different thoughts. Time seemed to stretch on endlessly as she anxiously tapped her foot on the floor.
After what felt like an eternity, the door to Dr. Danelle's room swung open. The man who had intervened earlier stepped out, followed by Dr. Danielle herself. They engaged in a brief conversation before the man nodded and walked away, leaving Dr. Danielle standing near the door. Her eyes found Kara in the waiting area, she turned back and closed the door.
Kara lowered her eyes " Are these people going to give her a chance" She said to herself and looked up " Oh God please help me " she was muttering when a girl came up to her " Are you Miss Kara Lavees ?? "
Kara blinked her eyes " Yes, I'm Kara Lavees." Girl smiled and said " Dr. Danielle is asking for your presence in her room." Kara immediately stood up and gazed at her in disbelief then nodded her head.
Kara's heart skipped a beat as she found herself again in front of Dr. Danielle, her hands trembling slightly. Dr. Danielle's expression had softened, and she spoke with a gentler tone, "Miss Lavees, I've reconsidered your request. While your experience is lacking, I believe in giving people a chance. The decision to hire you will be on a trial basis. If you can prove yourself within a month, we can discuss a more permanent position."
A mixture of relief and gratitude washed over Kara. She managed a heartfelt "Thank you, ma'am," fighting back tears of joy. Dr. Danielle extended her hand, which Kara shook with gratitude. "You'll start tomorrow. Report to the nurse's station at 8 a.m. And also reach out to the clinic's manager for further documentation and queries" Dr. Danielle instructed.
Kara nodded, feeling a renewed sense of purpose. She knew she had been given an opportunity, one she wouldn't take for granted.
