Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: Four Survivors

"Chirp"

The next day was bright and sunny.

On the trees along the road, many birds were chirping loudly, creating a noisy and grating atmosphere.

Bai Yin arrived at his destination around 11 o'clock in the morning.

In front of him stood a large villa, complete with its own swimming pool.

This seemed to be a neighborhood where only the wealthy could afford to live.

Normally, there would have been plenty of security personnel patrolling, making it inaccessible to ordinary people.

Of course, now it was completely abandoned.

---

The iron gate outside the villa was unlocked, so Bai Yin pushed it open and entered.

In front of him was a small garden, and beyond that was the living area.

"Creak..."

Bai Yin pushed open the door and stepped into the interior of the villa.

All around were scattered dust and cobwebs, indicating that it had been abandoned for a long time.

There was no doubt about it.

This place had been deserted for quite some time.

As for his sister?

She was probably either not a victim or had gone somewhere else.

---

Bai Yin searched the villa thoroughly and eventually arrived at a pink room.

The walls were covered with posters of a handsome male celebrity.

Bai Yin recognized the person; he was a popular celebrity in recent years.

Simply put: a short-term investment commodity for capital.

---

There was a desk by the window, and on the desk was a photo frame containing a family portrait.

Bai Yin walked over, picked up the photo frame, and wiped away the dust.

Soon, a scene of happiness emerged before his eyes.

In the photo were a middle-aged couple, a beautiful girl, and a chubby boy.

The father wore gold-rimmed glasses and looked like a professor, with an elegant demeanor.

The mother wore simple clothes that seemed plain at first glance but were obviously from an expensive brand.

The chubby boy was dressed in trendy clothes, wearing a baseball cap, probably just coming of age, striking a pose to show off his muscles.

He resembled the middle-aged couple, clearly their biological son.

As for the young girl?

She appeared to be about sixteen or seventeen years old.

She was very beautiful, with delicate features.

She wore a pristine white dress and was smiling, making a V sign with her fingers.

It was evident that she was very happy.

At the same time, her appearance was quite different from that of her parents.

---

Of course.

After all, she was an adopted child.

---

Yes, the girl in the photo was none other than Bai Yin's sister.

After many years, her appearance had changed quite a bit from his memory.

But the basic foundation and features remained the same.

If there was one major difference:

It was probably that she had developed from being cute towards being beautiful.

---

Bai Yin took off his backpack, unzipped it, and put the photo inside.

Halfway through, Blackie, who was in the bag, wagged his tail vigorously. After the photo was put in, it started to gnaw wildly.

But due to the sturdy frame, Bai Yin was not worried.

---

He searched for other information around.

Soon, he found a partially torn letter under the desk.

It looked like it had been gnawed by mice, missing a corner.

Bai Yin picked up the letter, and on the envelope were written these words:

[To Brother]

---

Although he was somewhat hopeful, Bai Yin knew.

This "brother" referred to someone else, not himself.

It was the chubby boy in the photo.

"Sigh..."

He sighed helplessly.

Then he quickly opened the envelope.

The letter was a bit torn, but it didn't affect readability.

It was short, with just a few lines:

[Brother, when are you coming back? Mom and Dad have been waiting for you for half a month.

We're almost out of food at home.

And there are still many, many zombies outside.

We're really worried about you. It would be great if you could come back soon.

Today, Dad's friend came to rescue us by helicopter.

Dad said we're going to a shelter in the north.

The location of the shelter is in City B.

If you see this letter, please come find us!

---April 6, 2020, Hei Yu]

That was the end of the letter.

It was written about a year ago.

So much time had passed.

And yet, the chubby boy had not discovered this letter.

Either he had gone somewhere else.

Or he had met with foul play.

Bai Yin quietly put the letter back into the envelope.

Then, he placed it on the desk and pressed it down with a desk lamp.

---

"City B..."

Bai Yin knew this city.

When he was about thirteen years old, he had lived there for a while for a certain long-term task.

In any case, it was far away.

If he walked, it would probably take him two or three months.

---

"Sigh..."

He sighed helplessly, but he had no choice but to head north on foot.

He was a transportation idiot!

Not only did he know nothing about cars, but he also got carsick, airsick, and seasick.

His childhood was spent learning all sorts of strange knowledge.

Naturally, he had no expertise in cars.

---

With a set goal in mind.

The rest of the journey would not be so confusing.

After a short rest, Bai Yin set off on foot towards the north.

Along the way, he encountered a team of four people.

Two men and two women.

---

"Bang!"

The car crashed into a lamppost with a loud bang.

Fortunately, no one in the car was injured.

"Shit, how did you drive? If you can't drive, don't!" A young man with blonde hair couldn't help but curse at the chubby driver.

Then, like everyone else, they all hurriedly abandoned the car and ran away.

Taking advantage of the fact that the nearby zombies had not completely surrounded them, they quickly fled.

---

The sound of the car hitting the utility pole attracted Bai Yin, who happened to be nearby.

By the time he arrived at the scene of the accident.

He saw two men and two women rushing into a department store.

Behind them, a group of zombies was chasing after them.

But luckily, those zombies weren't very fast.

So the group of four quickly disappeared.

---

"Survivors?"

Bai Yin muttered to himself.

He glanced at the smoking car not far away.

Feeling a bit regretful. (You don't even know how to drive, what's there to regret!)

But other than that, he didn't really care.

He just continued walking towards the north.

As for those four survivors?

What did they have to do with him?

He already had Blackie to keep him company, so he didn't need to find people to alleviate his loneliness.

"Ding!"

Just as he took a few steps.

The sound of a mission being issued echoed in his mind.

[Ding! Mission Issued: Join the group of four and ensure their safety tonight.

This mission is divided into three parts, and completing all of them will grant you a reward.

Reward: Grant the corpse companion ability to Blackie. (1/3)]

---

Bai Yin wasn't interested in whether those four people lived or died.

But Blackie's corpse companion ability.

That seemed like something he must obtain.

Although Bai Yin currently protected Blackie well, it was not immune to accidents.

If something unexpected happened in the future, and it ended up in the hands of zombies.

Then there would be

nowhere for Bai Yin to cry.

---

No choice!

For the reward of the mission.

Bai Yin decided to follow the system's instructions and make contact with those four people.

So Bai Yin entered the department store.

Once inside, he found many zombies wandering around, seemingly lost without their target.
