The journey back home wasn't particularly eventful, but it had its moments. Ur's condition forced us to take a few more breaks than usual, but thankfully, it didn't add too much time to our travel time.
Ultear seemed to enjoy herself during the trip, her usual gloomy aura lifting significantly. Ur shared stories about her adventures, recounting her days as part of an all-girls guild where she was an S-class wizard. According to her, the guild disbanded when their master passed away due to old age, with no suitable candidate to take over.
I used the opportunity to ask Ur about runes. She explained that she used a few runes representing ice and cold to enhance her spells and reduce their drawbacks. Her knowledge was limited to her magic's specific use, but she mentioned that mastering runes required a high level of proficiency in one's primary magic first.
Interestingly, Gildarts chimed in, revealing that his own magic had developed similarly. However, in his case, the integration of runes into his magic had happened instinctively, further strengthening his abilities.
After some time, Cana broke the silence.
"So, Ur, what are your plans after healing your wounds?"
Ur pulled Ultear closer into a protective hug. "I lost my daughter once. This time, I'll make sure she's safe from all dangers."
"Why don't you join the guild?" I suggested, steering the conversation in that direction.
"Fairy Tail, huh?" Ur mused. "I've worked alongside Fairy Tail during joint quests in the past. It's a good guild. I suppose it wouldn't be that bad." She smiled softly.
"And what about you, Gray?" I asked, turning to him.
"If Master's going, I'm coming too," Gray muttered, trying to sound indifferent.
"Awww, you like me that much?" Ur teased, pulling him into a hug.
We all burst into laughter, the atmosphere lightening further.
When we finally arrived in Magnolia, we headed straight for the guild to introduce Ur, Ultear, and Gray to everyone. After a round of greetings, conversations, and the usual Fairy Tail brawls, we decided to visit Granny's house for a proper check-up.
We left Gildarts behind—better safe than sorry when it comes to him.
At Granny's door, an idea struck me. I placed Gray in front of the entrance.
"What are you doing?" Gray asked, puzzled.
"Initiation ceremony," I said, putting on a serious face.
"What do yo—" Gray's words were cut off as the door swung open with a loud bang, sending him flying into a tree. He hit it hard and promptly passed out. A one-hit KO.
"Who the hel—Oh, it's you, kid. And who are these people?" Granny barked, as sharp-tongued as ever.
"Granny, we brought new members. Can you check on them?" Cana asked.
"New members, huh? Fine. Come on in—and don't touch anything."
Granny examined everyone. Ultear, it turned out, had a lot of magic potential. Her body, strengthened by the hardships she'd endured, was capable of handling the potency of her growing magic. Ur's relief was palpable.
As for Ur, Granny confirmed that her eye could be healed and that she could create magic-based artificial limbs to replace her lost ones. Granny assured us that Ur would still be able to use her magic effectively with the new limbs.
The next few days were spent gathering rare materials for Ur's recovery. Though the items weren't ordinary, Gramps was more than happy to help, treating Ur and the others as family already.
Once the materials were delivered to Granny, I headed back to the guild to catch up with everyone.
At the reception, Cornelia was cleaning up with a broom that seemed to be emitting smoke. Business as usual. I chatted with her briefly before heading to the backyard to train.
Mavis wasn't there—probably off researching something. I decided to practice my archery, quickly summoning arrows and rapid-firing them to improve my precision and speed.
Time flew by. I started in the morning and, before I knew it, collapsed onto the grass from mana exhaustion by noon.
As I lay there, I began reflecting on everything.
The system's rewards and quests had started decreasing as my magic progressed, but the items I still received were incredibly useful: health potions, mana potions, temporary strength and speed boosts, escape ropes, and more.
What I appreciated most was that the system didn't control my life—it merely guided me and provided occasional warnings about key events. That sense of freedom was a gift. I didn't know if the person who sent me here intended this, but I was grateful.
Lost in thought, I suddenly heard a familiar voice.
"Karna."
