Chapter 12 - Asking for More Information from the Nerdy Guy Named Kent

"You guys should go sleep. I'll keep watch first." Phillip muttered as he stared in the direction where Rendell was resting.

"I think one more person should stay awake," Aurora suggested with a timid gaze. She was the only person in the group who was aware of how much of a threat Rendell was to them.

Mystic Eyes

- You possess the eyes of an immortal. You can distinguish the truth between illusion and reality.

Aurora nervously stared at Rendell who was sitting on the folded boxes with his back against the wall. Her cerulean eyes flickered with a bright glow.

In her retina appeared some information about him that only she could see. It was an ability that came from her Mystic Eyes.

Rendell Madrigal [Level ?]

"His level… I can't see it…" She muttered in a quivering voice.

"What?!"

Everyone was alarmed by her words. They were aware of Aurora's ability to perceive the levels of every living creature. Her Mystic Eyes only failed to detect the strength of creatures that were overwhelmingly powerful like the Giant Millipede.

"Are you sure about that?" Phillip's face fell.

"Mn." Aurora nodded, feeling increasingly worried about their situation. The presence of an unknown stranger with indistinguishable power made her feel alarmed.

"Aurora's gift allows her to discern the levels of anyone who is at most three levels above her. Which means that person is at least at Level 5." Kent said with a frown.

His words made the group even more nervous.

"Then we will keep an eye on him." James volunteered. Other than Ralph who was seriously hurt, he was the second most powerful in the group. Phillip was also strong, but that was only in terms of physical strength.

"You must warn us immediately if you sense any threat from him," Kent muttered with a stern voice.

"Don't worry. I won't let anything happen to you guys." James nodded.

"You guys be careful," Aurora said before leaving with Celine.

Soon, the others also left and only Phillip and James remained.

"Relax. I don't think he is a bad person." James whispered when he saw Phillip's tense face.

Phillip snorted at his words. He then found a spot five meters away from Rendell. He was confident in his speed so he wasn't worried about how close he was to him.

James shook his head and chuckled. He walked towards a corner and sat on the ground.

The next day, Rendell woke up early and saw two people staring at him with wary and bloodshot eyes. 'They didn't kill me?' He was looking forward to them killing him in his sleep, but it seemed like these students were still decent people.

He stood up with a disappointed sigh.

Seeing him standing up all of a sudden, James and Phillip immediately rose to their feet.

"What a pity…" Rendell muttered while shaking his head as he walked past them.

James and Phillip stared at him nervously, prepared to make a move if he displayed signs of hostility. To their surprise, he didn't do anything out of the ordinary. He just opened a box and grabbed some food and water.

"What are you guys looking at?" He lifted his head to look at the two.

"A-Ah, nothing… Good morning, Rendell." James forced out a smile as he pretended to be friendly.

Meanwhile, Phillip didn't say anything and just glared at Rendell.

"You guys can get some for your friends, but don't take too many," Rendell warned them with a deep look that made the two unconsciously take a step back.

"Y-Yes. Thank you…"

After giving them a warning, Rendell went back to his spot to prepare his simple breakfast.

Not long later, the others finally woke up.

"You two don't look good. Did something happen while we were asleep?" Celine asked when she saw the bloodshot eyes of Phillip and James.

"No. We're fine. We just need some sleep. You guys should eat." James replied with a light smile. They stayed up all night, guarding against Rendell, but the man didn't even do anything. Keeping themselves awake while observing him closely drained their energy.

"Uh, okay." Celine was relieved to hear that.

"We'll take it from here. You two can rest." Kent said.

"Alright." James grabbed the dazed Phillip and dragged him to a quiet corner.

"Are they alright?" Aurora asked worriedly.

"They don't look injured so they should be fine. They just need some sleep." Ericka responded to her with a smile.

"By the way, how is Sir Ralph?" Celine asked while looking at Ericka.

Ericka turned to her and replied. "Sir Ralph has a strong body so he should be fine with a few more days of rest."

"Is that so?"

"That's good to hear."

Kent and the ladies chatted as they prepared their breakfast. They also took sneaky glances at Rendell from time to time.

As if noticing their gazes, Rendell looked at them, his eyes stopped at someone in particular. "You must be Kent."

Kent pushed up his glasses and nodded.

"Come here for a minute. I'd like to ask you some questions." Rendell beckoned to him.

The ladies became nervous when they heard this. They thought that he wanted to do something to Kent.

"It's alright. He just wants to speak with me." Contrary to their expectations, Kent remained calm. He stood up and walked towards Rendell.

"What do you want from me?" He asked with an inquisitive look on his face.

"Relax. I just want some information. I already asked your friend… uhm- what was his name again? Nevermind. Tell me everything that happened since that meteor struck the city. Don't leave any details."

Kent inwardly heaved a sigh of relief. He was on the verge of activating his Gift, but it seemed like there was no need to.
