Chapter 24 - Inferno Trial

I gazed at the astral chessboard with a triumphant gleam in my eyes. The once-assured manner of the doppelgänger has now faltered, giving way to a faint undertone of annoyance.

I smirked, "Checkmate. Your moves were crafty, but I saw through your illusions."

The doppelganger, acknowledging the defeat with a sarcastic smile, responded, "Well done, Magnus. You've proven your intellect in this realm. But the trials ahead will demand more than strategic prowess."

My confidence was strengthened by the victory as I leaned forward and asked, "What challenges await me next?"

The doppelganger's form flickered, the astral energy around him pulsating with mysterious intensity. "The purpose, Magnus, is to test your resolve and your adaptability. Only those who overcome the trials can lay claim to the Crown of Eldoria."

I became intrigued and pressed further. "And what if I fail?"

The doppelganger's eyes glowed ominously. "Failure in the astral trials has unknown consequences. But you've proven yourself worthy so far. The next trial awaits." He pointed towards the next floating island.

The astral chessboard disappeared, and the floating island became a beautiful sight again. Lumina fluttered nearby, her scales reflecting the ethereal glow of her surroundings. The projections of my friends, Alina, Elijah, Rowan, and Lady Isolde, materialized before him.

Alina smiled warmly and said, "Magnus, you did it! That chess match was incredible."

Elijah nodded in agreement. "Yeah, that doppelganger didn't stand a chance. Now, what's the next trial?"

Rowan chimed in, "Seriously, Elijah, he passed a difficult test, you know."

Elijah patted Rowan's shoulder and said, "I know. I know."

Lady Isolde, my mother, added, "Congratulations on completing this trail. Do you need any help?"

I appreciated their encouragement and replied, "Thank you, all. I need to face it alone. Trust me, and I'll get through it."

Suddenly, as I touched my pendant, I wondered, Also, where is Nyx?

Don't worry; I am here. I don't want to deal with your family. Nyx transmitted the message to me.

Okay. I transmitted it back.

Lumina nudged me gently, reassuring me that she would accompany him through the upcoming trials. The projections of my friends nodded in understanding; their expressions were a mix of concern and confidence.

I stood at the gate of the next trial; there was a small board next to it that read:

[TO GET TO THE NEXT TRIAL, YOU NEED TWO MEMBERS IN YOUR TEAM]

As I stood before the gate, Alina and Elijah immediately stepped forward, both eager to join me in the upcoming challenge. The friendly banter began between them, each vying for the opportunity to be my partner.

Alina, with determination in her eyes, declared, "Magnus, you know we make an amazing team. We've faced dangers together, and we've always come out on top. Choosing me just makes sense."

Elijah, not one to back down, smirked, "Sure, you two have a history, but Magnus and I have a connection too. We've been through thick and thin. He knows I've got his back in any situation."

The playful bickering escalated, with each listing their strengths and reminding me of past victories. It was as if they were competing in their trial of persuasiveness. Rowan, standing to the side, observed the scene with an amused expression.

I raised my hands and said, "Okay, guys, enough. I am choosing Rowan." I pointed to Rowan.

Everyone looked shocked, including Rowan. He stammered, "Huh. Me!?" He pointed to himself.

As I declared my choice for the upcoming trial, the playful conversation between Alina and Elijah came to an abrupt halt. The shock was evident on their faces, and even Rowan seemed taken aback by my decision.

I nodded firmly, pointing directly at Rowan. "Yes, Rowan. I chose you for this one."

Rowan, with a mix of surprise and excitement, pointed at himself and questioned, "Me? Are you sure?"

I grinned, "Absolutely. We're entering uncharted territory, and your archery skills might come in handy. Besides, I've seen you in action. You're more than capable."

Alina crossed her arms, feigning offense. "Well, I never thought my expertise in elemental magic and combat skills would be overlooked for a bow and arrow."

Elijah, trying to diffuse the situation, added, "Hey, it's Dimwit's call. Let's trust his judgment."

Rowan, now wearing a confident smile, accepted the decision. "Alright then, Magnus. I'm ready for whatever comes our way."

I teleported Rowan into the astral realm, and we greeted each other with a small hug. Elijah, with a smirk, teased, "Well, Dimwit, make sure you don't get yourself into too much trouble. We'll be here waiting for you."

Alina, still feigning offense, chimed in, "Just because he's your friend doesn't mean you get to call him dimwit, Elijah."

Elijah shrugged. "He knows I'm kidding. Right, Dimwit?"

I chuckled, appreciating the lighthearted banter. "Yeah, yeah. I'll be fine, Prince Charming. You will all be ready for the next step. We'll catch up soon."

That being said, we entered the next trial to reach the Crown of Eldoria. It was a combat trial. We saw a stone slate with some rules written on it. I sighed. "More rules!?"

Astral Combatants: Participants will face astral beings that represent various forms of combat. These entities are manifestations of astral energy and possess unique abilities.

Elemental Realms: The combat arena will be chosen between different elemental realms, each presenting distinct challenges. The realms include fire, ice, lightning, earth, and shadow. Adaptability is key to overcoming the adversaries within each realm. Each realm has its own unique name.

Astral Weapons: Participants will be equipped with astral weapons tailored to their strengths. These weapons can vary from swords, bows, and staves to elemental-infused gauntlets.

Trial Progression: Advancement through the trial requires defeating astral combatants within each elemental realm. Success in one realm unlocks the gateway to the next, bringing participants closer to the Crown of Eldoria.

Astral Shields: Protective shields will be available in certain areas of the arena. Participants can strategically use these shields to block attacks from astral beings or to create opportunities for counterattacks.

Collaborative Strategies: Participants are encouraged to collaborate with their astral counterparts, developing synergistic strategies to overcome challenges. Coordination between teammates is essential for success.

Time Limit: The trial has a time limit, and participants must progress efficiently to reach the final realm. Failure to do so within the allotted time may result in unforeseen consequences.

Astral Healing Orbs: Scattered throughout the arena are healing orbs infused with astral energy. Participants can utilize these orbs to restore their astral forms and continue the trial.

Final Confrontation: The last stage of the trial culminates in a challenging confrontation with a powerful astral guardian. Overcoming this guardian is the final step before reaching the Crown of Eldoria.

Respect the Astral Realm: Participants must respect the energy of the astral realm and refrain from using external influences or unfair tactics. Any breach of these rules may lead to unforeseen consequences.

Rowan said, "So we basically have to fight." I gave a yes nod.

As we stood in the astral arena, the giant hourglass captured our attention, its sands slowly trickling down, marking the passage of time within the trial. The wheels of the Lunar Chronometer turned relentlessly, urging us to proceed with caution.

What did I expect? I want a digital clock. I pondered as I looked at the hourglass.

Rowan, eyeing the hourglass, remarked, "It looks like time is of the essence in this trial. We need to be efficient and stay on our toes."

I nodded in agreement, my gaze shifting to the massive wheel adorned with mystical symbols representing different elemental realms. "Let's spin the wheel and see which realm awaits us first."

With a shared resolve, Rowan and I approached the wheel. I grasped its edges, feeling the ethereal energy emanating from the symbols. "Here goes nothing," I muttered as I gave the wheel a firm spin.

The wheel whirred and clicked, gradually slowing down. Eventually, it came to a stop, aligning with a fire symbol.

Rowan raised an eyebrow, a mix of anticipation and curiosity in his expression. "Inferno, huh? Wonder what challenges and advantages that realm holds."

I chuckled, "Guess we're about to find out. Brace yourself, Rowan. Let's make our way through the Inferno Realm and conquer this trial."

We stepped into the glowing portal leading to the Inferno Realm.

--------------

Upon entering the heart of the Inferno Realm, Rowan and I found ourselves standing on the edge of a towering volcano. The molten lava below glowed with astral intensity, and the air was thick with the heat of astral flames.

A holographic display materialized, presenting the rules of the Inferno Realm trial:

Volcanic Battlefield: Participants will navigate a volcanic landscape filled with astral monsters. The goal is to defeat a set number of monsters to progress to the next trial.

Monster Points: Each astral monster has a designated point value. Participants must accumulate a specified number of points by defeating these monsters to unlock the gateway to the next trial.

Time Limit: A time limit is imposed for completing the trial. Participants must strategize and defeat monsters efficiently within the allotted time.

Strategic Conquest: Participants can choose their approach to the trial—engage in direct combat, utilize astral abilities, or employ teamwork to overcome challenges.

I sighed again, "Great! More rules!?"

As the holographic display faded, astral monsters emerged from the depths of the volcano in their fiery forms, ready for battle.
