Staring at him, her heart kept pounding hard with the fear of being stabbed to death.
Asher smirked before he moved towards her, staring at her with hatred reflected in his hazel eyes.
She tried not to think about what would happen to her, but how she died kept replaying in her head. Tears clustered in her eyes, she held them back.
"Katherine, don't you think it won't be fun to kill you now?"
His question made her snap out of her thoughts. She didn't know what he planning, but she would rather have him kill her than tarnish her name.
"Why are you doing this to me, Asher? I clearly said I don't love you anymore. I am married now, so let's say goodbye to our past," she said calmly. She didn't expect those words to come out so freely and easily.
"Our past? So it was easy for you to forget about me? What am I even saying, I blame myself for having dated a dullard like you."
She chuckled at his words. "If you ever come close to me, you will see if I am still that dullard you knew or someone different," she said, a faint smile on her face.
"Haha, I am going to wait for that time to come," he paused briefly. "Then, enjoy the benefit of my patience while it last."
She didn't wait for him to continue before she walked away. She did not look back until she hailed a cab and hopped in. She doubted if Asher would give up on killing her, but what if he wanted her to die in a grand way?
She escaped the fate of dying on her wedding day, what would be her new fate? Being killed by Asher in another way?
"Ma, we're here," the driver informed her.
She snapped out of her thoughts before she pay the driver and headed back to the hospital.
The moment she entered Eric's ward, she was welcomed by several questions from Eric.
"Where did you go? Did you really went to see that bastard? What if he harms you, or tries to kidnap you? Why didn't you tell me that you were leaving the hospital?"
"Why are you worried about me getting hurt? You don't have to act like my husband when we are alone, please," she pleaded, leaving his questions unanswered.
Eric's eyes widened at her words. "But I am your husband. If I can't act like your husband, worry about you, and stay by your side, why else did we get married?"
"I agreed to marry you not because I love you, or want any special treatment from you, but because you are the perfect man I needed," even though she sounded as if she was using him, she cared less.
"Am I the perfect man for you because I am handsome? Are your blind eyes just seeing my charms?" Instead of getting mad at her, he asked happily like a fool.
"Honey, why do you like–"
"Did we miss something?" Katherine was interrupted by Jaylen family's question.
Katherine forced a smile before she walked up to them. "Mr. Davis, it was just an intimate conversation," she replied.
"I see," he said and walked up to his son, who had already returned to his bed.
Madam Quinn who had been silent, walked up to Eric. Her children also joined her, pretending like they care about him. Katherine knew none of them would have come if Mr. Davis hadn't come here.
Ever since their father promised to hand over the company to his most hardworking child, or any of his children who won his favor, everyone has been trying their best; Eric wasn't left out since Mr. Davis decided not to be biased, even to his female child.
"Oh, I almost forgot, I prepared this porridge for you since my brother can't eat porridge now," Avery said, about to stand up, but was stopped by Eric.
"Who said I can't eat this? The doctor? Or Katherine?"
Katherine ignored his silliness and walked up to Avery. She took the porridge before she appreciated. "Thank you so much. I can't believe I am going to eat food made by the beauty goddess herself," she said with a warm smile.
"You too? I can't believe you are talking to me like that when you aren't bad yourself," Avery said, a sincere smile on her face. She turned to face Eric before they continued their conversation.
Katherine acted as if she were just a wall. She didn't even bother to make any distractions since the family are so engrossed in their conversation. She wondered what they might be discussing, especially Madam Quinn who suddenly became gentle.
After a long talk, they finally noticed she was in the room. Madam Quinn turned to her, feigning a smile, "Katherine, thank you for taking care of Eric. I heard he is going to be discharged tomorrow?"
"Yes, he will," Katherine replied politely, amusing Madam Quinn. Who would've thought Katherine's voice would be this calm, aside from being loud and rude?
"I am glad his injury is healing up fast. I am so impatient to have him back home," with that, she left with her children.
Outside the hospital, Madam Quinn, who wasn't herself in the hospital, exhaled deeply. Acting was really hard, she confirmed that today.
She raised her gaze to stare at Avery, who was smiling with satisfaction. "Why are you smiling? Don't you think that little witch knows I am pretending? Like, I am not the type of woman that cares," she said.
"You don't have to bother about Katherine, she is mine to handle. Just focus on digging up dirt on Eric while acting like a loving mother. That way, you will win father's favor and make Ethan the heir of Jaylen Group," Avery reassured her mother.
Ethan, who had been silent all along, spoke up, "But dad said we should do this with sincerity?"
"Is he doing this with sincerity? See, dad stayed with him instead of coming with us, did you not sense anything fishy? Like, he suddenly got married to the most brilliant heiress in Freeland just to win dad's favor, and you think this is going to be based on sincerity?" Avery questioned, convincing Ethan.
