Chapter 3 - Learning History

The library was sort of big. It wasn't as big as the massive library in Sydney though. And I bet there are much bigger libraries around the world as well. The building was made mostly of stone at least on the outside. There was a pattern engraved on the bricks that made of the place. I believe it was to look like a branch extending out surrounding the entrance which was the typical double wooden doors.

It was impressive to me at least and it seems that I can kill some time here. I walked in the building which had the giant sign 'Sleeping Sheep Centre' on it. What kind of place is called that? Well name aside the place on the inside was impressive. There were shelves of books everywhere. But before reading I should try to talk to the librarian.

Walking up to the counter near the entrance I said.

"Hello, my name is Eden. Is this the place where I can read the history of this Kingdom?"

The librarian was a short old man that looked lie one of the hobbits from the lord of the rings. That and the fact that he's reading a book with reading glasses. The librarian looked up and saw me. He placed a bookmark in the book he was reading and took off his reading glasses.

"Yes this is the place where you can read the history of this kingdom. Not that anyone wanted to know."

Eh...that was a weird reaction. This old man seemed to be annoyed. Why? Trying to find out I said.

"What do you meant no one wanted to know? This place obviously holds great amounts of knowledge!"

The old man smiled and said.

"Good! That's the reaction I wanted. This place, the mage guild and any other place with intelligence hold great knowledge. But what do the stupid fools want? To know how to kill a certain creature. Of course we have that knowledge. But we also have history. Do they ask how the knowledge was discovered? Do they ask what history is behind each creature? NO! They only care about how to appear like a knight! To gain Honour. There's no honour with a shallow mind!"

The old man went on ranting about how stupid the melee class was. He praised the mage classes, the crafter classes and even the rouge classes. Well at least I'm not bored. This way I can learn a bit more about this place. After the old man rant was over I said.

"I completely agree with you words. Not many appreciate the past and set out for the future blindly. But without the past, the future is bound to repeat the past."

The old man smiled even more and I felt the familiarly levels between us rise a bit.

"Good. Eden you have the right mind set. Oh I didn't introduce myself yet. I am Dan. I've been taking care of this place for over 40 years now. You can ask me anything."

I see....maybe where the porn section is? No. That would be stupid. First of all I have to find all of the information about this town.

"I ask that you tell me the section with the history of this town."

"I see it is over there. In section 35."

Dan pointed to the fifth row to the left. I thanked Dan and started to walk to the section. Each shelf seemed to be 7 metres long. There were 5 rows on each shelf and most likely 200 books on each shelf. I pasted section 33....34....35. I here now. The space in between the shelves was a good 3 metres.

I pull out a book randomly and found a book titled "Slayer of 100 beasts". Nope this isn't it. I searched around more and found some more books with titles like "How to tame rabbits" "Cooking for beginners" and "How to lose weight quickly".

These three books were useless. Well maybe not the cooking book but the other two had no use for me. After 10 minutes of pulling out books and putting them back in I finally found the book I was searching for. I opened it up and started reading.

"History of Tellop Town

The town named after its founder had its fair share of events. As part of the Kingdom of Kallamore, it served to train young men into knights that would represent Honour of all kinds. Located in the Senbain mountains where monsters invade every week, the Kingdom has used this place to train for centuries.

The original Tellap Town was destroyed in the Kallamore-Haven War and the survivors under the guidance of the descendent its founder Tellap, also named Tellap, they migrated to a new area where they built the current Tellap Town.

Once used for farming, the town at first had the unexpected surprise known as monsters in less than 3 days where the initial farmers and their families were slaughtered by the invading monsters. The Kingdom quickly responded by sending a platoon of Knights to protect the small village that soon became a town.

Unfortunately the town never became a city due to the constant monster threat. Attempts to find the reasons of the constant monster invasion has been futile. There has been many cases where the brave knights of Kallamore cleared out the entire mountain to find that in a week the monsters appeared again to invade.

The explorer Tellop was known to be an person of high regard as he had scouted out many lands under Kallamore's orders and found places which were suited for human civilisation though this one was unfit. Tellop was killed during the first invasion of the monsters defending the town as the other villagers escaped. The town was as a result named after him in his honour."

This book was very unexpected. He had known that the Kingdom of Kallamore had monster problems and that each week a monster invasion occurred. But he didn't know of the town name's origins and that this place was originally intended for farmlands. Putting back the book, I pulled out the next book titled "The rise and fall of Kallamore".

"The rise and fall of Kallamore.

The Kallamore Kingdom most known for housing the most powerful of knights was once a great kingdom whom nearly conquered the continent. There is little known on how the Kingdom arised but theories suggest that it was first formed from the dissolution of several other Kingdoms during the age of war 800 years ago although it officially formed much more recently . Since then, they have been gathering great power especially in terms of military might. For the first 100 years of its formation which was around 300 years ago, it has stayed silent for the most part, taking in people whom tried to escape the tyranny of other Kings and nobles alike. The Kingdom is said to originate in the central part of the continent, a bit north near the Niflheim empire before its fall.

After the first 100 years of silent, the young King Vincent Kallamore the first declared war on several of its neighbouring Kingdom. Taking the initiative, Kallamore conquered a large portion of many countries before they countered. As a result, Kallamore managed to hold dominate over all other during the King's reign. When the crown was passed down to the King's son, King Vincent Kallamore the second, Kallamore was still in its golden age. However in the second half of the King's life, several Kingdoms allied together to try and take down the Giant known as Kallamore. These Kingdoms include Haven, Toreupan, Masen, Thor, Aidel. There were also several other smaller Kingdoms that were absorbed into the ones listed due to betrayal especially with the Haven Kingdom which is known as the enemy of the Kallamore Kingdom for many generations. With the alliance, Kallamore was picked off bit by bit. During this era, the King was slain in battle and the crown was passed down to the current King of Kallamore, King Vincent Kallamore the third but not before making peace treaties with the other Kingdoms.

The true downfall of the Kallamore Kingdom occurred during the ruling of the current King. Before the King's rule, over half the Kingdom was lost already. With the peace treaty, there was some time before another War would occur. As a result the King ordered that the Kingdom would take preparation for another war. After 10 years of silent, the Haven Kingdom declared war against the Kallamore Kingdom. The capital was burnt down during the start of the war but with the great knight Koldeurim the King was able to reconquer and reclaim part of their Kingdom taken long ago. However the other Kingdoms were already suspecting such a war would occur again and another alliance was formed. During this war, Kallamore was pushed back and a stalemate occurred.

30 years ago with the death of the great knight Koldeurim, the Kingdom lost many of its terrorties especially to the Haven Kingdom. Eventually they lost all their castles and now inhabit the Senbain Mountains among other small provinces. The war still continue today as both sides skirmish against each other though it seems the Haven Kingdom will win the war."

Most of this I already knew. But its the small details that people often miss. People know that the Kallamore Kingdom and Haven Kingdoms are sworn enemies but never considered when they were not. Nor do people truly know when the Kallamore Kingdom was pushed back to its current state. The name Koldeurim would've been well known for knights but is almost non-existent to all others.

I continued to read for a couple more books before saying.

"Well did something occur when I wasn't looking?"

I checked for any messages that appeared since I wasn't paying attention to them.

You gained 1 stat in wisdom

You gained 1 stat in intelligence

Judging when the stats appeared, it was after I read the books. I continued to read for a couple more hours. Learning more about the details of different places and other kingdoms as well. But I stopped when I noticed the message in front of my eyes.

Satisfaction metre is under 10%

Satisfaction also known as hunger. According to the guides I read, you have to eat a meal once every 5 hours unless your sleeping. I looked outside and saw that it was already night but I can't logout and I don't have a place to sleep. But before everything else I have to eat.

Guuuuuuuaaaaaaaaarrrrrr

It seems my stomach also agrees.

"Inventory window"

A transparent window appeared before me showing all I had. Lets see....10 rye bread and a canteen filled with water. Apparently you can get water from a fountain in a city or from a river if outside or something like that. I take out a rye bread and started to chew on it. It was almost flavourless and hard. I almost cut my mouth chewing it before taking a slip form my canteen. Well this is the lowest of the low. Maybe I should learn the cooking skill? Nah there's others that can do that and I can't cook whether its in real life or in game.

After eating the rye bread I looked at the Satisfaction metre again. It was now at 35%. So one rye bread can fill my metre by 1/3. But ever since I first go in the game it was little more than 12 hours. That means the bar will lower to almost nil every half a day when I'm awake. Though the metre will decrease more if you do physical activities. Not that I plan to do so. I ate another 2 pieces of rye bread. With my Satisfaction full I stood up putting back the books I took out.

Now that food issue is somewhat resolved, I need a place to sleep. I walk back to the entrance of the library and noticed that Dan was still there. I walked up to him. Noticing me Dan said.

"Oh Eden, how is your study of the past?"

It seems that our friendship dropped a bit when I didn't see him.

"Good. I learnt a lot about the history of this Kingdom and of other places as well. But I have to ask if you know a place where I can sleep tonight?"

Noticing my concern which was pretty apparent Dan replied.

"I have a room upstairs that isn't occupied. You can stay there for free from now on. That's the least I can do for a person like you. And while I'm at it why don't you work here for a while. I am in need of a spare set of hands."

Ding

Job offer: Work at the library.

Dan the librarian has offered you work. You are to work at the desk from 8 am to 10 pm, checking in and out all visitors. You are also to record any borrowed books coming in or out.

Paid is 1 silver per day

I look at the details of the job which seemed simple enough to do and I do need some money at least before I can get out of the town.

"I accept"

There better not be a catch to this job.

"Good, you work tomorrow. Also I may have some requests for you during the job"

Shit.

"I'll pay you extra to compensate for the task."

This better not be that. I better check.

"Umm Dan....you do know I'm a guy right?"

Come on that reaction.....

"Yes of Course I know. No girl your age would have such small breasts." Dan cheerfully said.

Well that misunderstanding was resolved cleanly though I feel insulted. Now I really should get some sleep.

I walk to the second story of the building and found that there were a couple of rooms down a hallway. I shouted down to Dan.

"Heyyyyyyy. Which room do I go into?"

Dan's voice echoed back.

"The second one to the righttttttttt."

I walk up to the one Dan said and opened the old door. The room was a 5 by 5 metre big room. There was a bed and a table with a candle on it. There was also a window on the side as well with curtains. It was simple. Very simple but it would do. I closed the door behind me and lied in the bed. After a while of shutting my eyes I slept.
