"But there's a catch !" My words caused another silence as everyone stared at me including those who had earlier on ignored me and concluded I was up to my usual antics.
"I only have fifty copies and one copy is worth ten gold !"
"Ten gold!"
"That's a lot!"
"How could we afford that !"
"Not fair!"
"Lower the price down!"
"Ughh! You paupers! "
The loud feminine voice caused the uproar to seize as the students in her path quickly made way. Adele walked up to me, alongside some girls who were part of her clique or would I say worshipers at her feet, whose names I didn't bother remembering. In the grandscheme of things, they were irrelevant.
"Ten gold you say ? I will take it."
I wasn't suprised that she was here and also been the first bidder. Firstly she was born into the house of a rich family, whom I feel might actually be wealthy but are trying to hide their wealth for certain reasons. One of which could be why she was attending this school. She just didn't fit in the rich class that existed here, she was above it. It might also be one of the reasons Miss Gloria had a soft spot for her. Trust me when you're rich, people like you for no reason.
I said ten gold didn't mean I was going to sell it at ten gold, not when I had the opportunity to inflate the price as high as the ego of the rich buyer. With a smile I gracefully responded.
"No my fair lady, such a meagre amount would only be worthy to come out of the purse of a peasant as it would be an insult to the purse of the calibre of your person. You I believe are a fine lady of the utmost upbringing, lavished with riches and pleasure. I believe a double digit not lower than five of an even number shouldn't be a problem, and considered fairly sufficient for such payment. "
"Wullum Rakespeare? !"
"Who let bro into the kitchen!"
"My God! my God!"
"In order words, put your money where your mouth is !"
"Did he call us peasants ?"
"The thief is poetic like his fingers!"
"From gold to heart, you have got a slippery tongue as well." Adele replied with a grin, her hand outstretched as one of her followers handed her an expensive looking purse.
"I hear it taste well."
She looked at him in shock and then scrunched her face in disgust, "You wish."
"That's what they always say." My quick witty reply caused her lowered hands to stop, the jingling of the gold coins no longer heard.
Shit! My big mouth.
I stared at her with a pleading eyes as a smile brightened up her pretty frowned face. It was a sadistic smile.
"Here you go thief," She handed me a small sack of gold as I counted it and immediately gave her the book.
"One sold, who's next?"
Fuck! Hundred gold coins! Hundred gold coins! Mom I made it! Look at your boy now!
Next was the other rich kids of the class who totally avoided me as well as I did for them. This one's never tried to bully you or insult you or even speak to you. They just come to school in their fancy cars, use their fancy toys in class and share amongst themselves and totally ignore you till it was time to ride back home in their fancy cars. The only way you could get them to speak to you was if you were fancy like themselves. If you weren't rich, don't bother. And surprisingly they also didn't speak to Adele as well, as it seemed they must have naturally recognised themselves in the food chain and had given Adele her revered spot, up above theirs.
"Six gone! Anyone else ?"
"Can we join to buy ?"
A small feminine voice asked as I stared down at her. Oh did I tell you I was now standing on my chair ? No way I would drop such a speech like Napoleon with my feet touching the ground. An arousing talk deserved a rising platform. Or what do you think ?
"Umm....sure , why not. "
Her face brightened up as I immediately felt pity for her. Taking a closer look at her and her status was reflected by her appearance and all. She seemed to be from a satisfied family. One that prays for tomorrow daily bread before going to sleep, but wakes up before tomorrow breaks to search for that daily bread. I instinctively hoped she wasn't paying with her life savings or something.
But there was nothing I could do, as I couldn't prevent her from buying my scam. What would come next if the question 'Why should she not buy it?' Pops on. I will be done for.
"Hey everyone! This sweet lady here requests for two people buying one book ...a round of applause for her quick thinking!"
"Let's go!"
I pulled her up to me as she stood on my chair with shaky legs, clearly afraid of height. The students clapped for her as I felt a slender arm snaking around my waist. I caught the hand the moment it dipped it fingers into my small sack of gold.
I looked up to see Pearl with a wide smile as I immediately let go of her hand, her left eye winking at me. She picked out some gold coins as she joined the crowd that was already forming around my seat. Even those from other classes were also trooping in.
"You're not from this class?"
Her head moving in a negative response while she waved at those applauding her.
"The name is Dave."
"Betty." She instantly replied.
"You got some to pair with ?" I asked her as she shooked her head yet again in a negative response.
"I will pair with her." I turned towards the voice, realising the game Pearl was playing. But didn't that mean I was going to still lose five gold coins. Wait is she playing a different game, not the one I was thinking about.
"There you have it guys, first book sold to a pair, a pretty couple I would say."
Immediately the students began breaking off, looking for a partner to share the amount with and quickly purchase as I announced the number of books left.
