"Then why do you need it?" Harry asked as the fire continued to roar in the background.
"Not telling," Thane replied in a mocking sing-song voice before all amusement dropped from his face, "Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll be leaving now."
"No, you're not," Hermione rebutted as she whipped out her wand, much to Thane's surprise, "I thought there was some hope I was wrong about you, Thane, but now it's clear to me you're just as rotten as the rest of House Slytherin."
Harry and Ron share a glance before also drawing their wands and pointing them at Thane, who let out a long sigh, "I don't know why the three of you are so desperate to make me a villain. I've done nothing to harm any of you!"
"You stole my father's cloak! You're wearing it right now!" Harry shouted, and Thane paused momentarily, "Fair point, but according to the law, the robe belongs to me."
"You did what?" Hermione squawked now, just noticing the silver robe across Thane's shoulders.
"No need to stress the details now. All that matters is that the three of you have just drawn your wands at me. Which means I am now well within my rights to defend myself, but I'll give you all one last chance to put your wands away." Thane said as a warm smile spread across his face.
There was a moment of silence before Ron stepped forward, "I've been waiting a long time to do this…Stupefy!"
A bright red bolt of light leaped from the tip of Ron's wand and shot towards Thane, who let out a long, tired sigh that seemed to fill the room as he reached out and batted aside the stunning charm with the back of his hand, "A bit of advice, don't announce when you're about to attack."
Ron stared in disbelief at Thane's hand, "H-How did you do that?"
"It's a parlor trick; just coat your body in a bit of mana, and you can ignore the errant charm or jinx. It's a bit sad your spell couldn't get past it, to be honest," Thane replied as he lowered his hand and laughed, "Can't believe you challenged me to a duel."
Ron flushed bright red as his jaw clenched in anger, "I'll show you! Incendio!"
A gout of fire leaped from the tip of Ron's wand, unfurling as it traveled through the air, becoming a ten-foot-wide cone, which Thane had to admit was rather impressive though a poorly chosen spell.
Opening his mouth, Thane inhaled as the flames reached him, funneling the fiery storm into a thin stream. After a second, the flames vanished, and Thane snapped his mouth shut before exhaling, sending twin curls of smoke into the air from his nostrils.
Harry, Hermione, and Ron stared at Thane, who hadn't moved from his spot, and continued to stare back at them expectantly. "What did I just say about announcing your attacks?"
Just as Thane finished speaking, Hermione stepped forward and flicked her wand at Thane, "Wingardium Leviosa!"
Thane felt the spell land and slide off his Fae robes, but his regular school attire started to lift into the air, taking Thane with them. "That's good, Hermoine. Use the element of surprise. Ron, Harry, take notes."
"Give up, Thane; you can't take on all three of us!" Harry shouted as Thane lifted three feet off the ground and started to spin as he was suspended in the air.
"Really, I haven't even cast a single spell yet?" Thane asked as he reached into his robes and pulled out his spellblade, "Before I start the fight, I have to know if any of you guys know how to cast the Shield Charm."
When no one in the trio responded Thane shrugged but the movement was a bit awkward as now he was completely upside down spinning in the air, "Suit yourself, Fumos."
A thick plume of silver smoke billowed forth from the tip of Thane's spellblade, quickly spreading out through the room, obscuring everything from view.
"I can't see a bloody thing!" Ron cursed as he whipped around in every direction trying to get his bearings but everything was just more and more thick obscuring smoke.
"Everyone stick together, he wants to divide and conquer us and if that happens we'll lose in a heartbeat!" Hermione advised as she tried to wave away the smoke but it barely budged.
"Hermione, is that you?" Harry asked from a few feet away, only for a chilling voice to respond, "Locomotor Mortis."
Harry let out a startled gasp as his legs were suddenly bound together, and he dropped to the floor like dead weight, "I can't move my legs!"
"Harry, you need to dispel the jinx the incantation is…" Before Hermione could complete her sentence, a hand clamped over her mouth, "Quietus."
Hermione whirled around but before she could catch a glimpse of Thane he vanished and when she tried to call out to her friends not a single sound came out from her mouth.
Ron whirled around, his heart hammering like a jack rabbit, "Hermione! Is something wrong?! I swear to god, Thane if you laid a finger on her!"
Before Ron could finish his threat, the thick cloud of silver smog vanished, revealing the room once more.
"Relax, lover boy," Thane replied as he walked past Ron and patted his shoulder, making the ginger jump in surprise before he spun around with wand in hand.
Grabbing Ron's offending wrist Thane's emerald eyes stared down Ron who for a moment managed to maintain eye contact before Thane blink and for a split second his rounded pupils turned into vertical splits.
Ron yelped and stumbled back, letting go of his wand in his shock, which Thane caught deftly with a disappointed shake of his hand, "So what exactly was your plan if you managed to catch up to Snape? Demand that he hands over the stone and hope he doesn't just kill you all so there aren't any witnesses to report his crime."
Thane asked as he turned around and regarded the sorry state of the trio.
"We couldn't just sit around and do nothing!" Hermione replied, though her voice was barely above a whisper, still under the effect of Thane's quieting charm.
"You could have very well done nothing," Thane spat, "That would have been the smart thing to do, just stay back and do nothing!"
Silence reigned after Thane's outburst, and after a second, he let out a sigh and pinched the bridge of his nose, "But If Snape is really after the stone, we might as well face him together."
Thane tossed Ron his wand as he waved his other hand dismissing the leg binding curse on Harry and the quieting charm on Hermione, "Here take these as well."
Thane then reached into his robes and pulled out four vials of liquid fire, one that he kept for himself and the other three he offered to the trio, "These will let us pass the fire."
"What about the potions on the pedestals? I bet one of them lets us through," Hermione replied, only for Thane to roll his eyes, "Yes, but there's also a chance that all of the potions are some form of poison. Also, why even have the option for potential intruders to easily circumnavigate the defenses you installed? Same with the living chess board, just make regular golems and have them attack anyone that doesn't know the command term. And using a Cerberus of all things as a guard beast is the worst choice, I'm starting to think whoever made this vault wanted people to break in."
"Well, after the trap door, we almost got suffocated by a bunch of devil's snare," Harry added helpfully, only for Thane's eye to twitch in irritation, "You mean the plant whose main weakness is light, that can be summoned at a whim by any half-competent wizard?"
No one responded to Thane's question, and he started to mutter angrily under his breath as he threw back his potion like it was a flask of moonshine before setting the rest of the potions on the floor, "Spent three months sneaking about to get materials, and I don't even need to use them…"
Then, without another word, Thane turned and strode off through the flames, leaving the trio standing alone in the room.
Ron then turned to glance at Hermione and Harry, "Should…we tell him about the flying keys?"
