Chapter 25 - No intentions of giving up

Everyone was watching the team that worked to put out the fire that raged inside the auditorium.

That team included the few still alive from the ancillary staff, including the old janitor working assiduously alongside the warriors.

They had to act fast to keep the fire from spreading to the other nearby buildings.

With the help of the warriors, Nate and Brendan set off with chainsaw and flamethrower in hand.

Hoping to free Kat and the others who had decided to remain holed up in the canteen rather than risk going to the auditorium.

There was no need for the calvary, Brendan and his group of friends had been doing a decent job holding off the locusts before help arrived.

At least in the canteen, they would have had food and water to last them for some days.

Brendan had no regrets about staying in the canteen, from their window they could see the auditorium on fire.

It was clear that someone still wanted Brandon dead, the group had split up to secure the canteen area.

While Brendan was sealing off the delivery area where the local produce and inventory was stored someone deliberately knocked over some cans while his back was turned.

When Brendan went to check what was causing the disturbance he came face to face with one of the lieutenant locusts.

It was slightly bigger than the rest and looked ferocious in size and strength.

Instinctively Brendan knew he couldn't outrun the monster and he didn't want to lead it back to his friends either.

So he knocked over one of the standing shelves on it to delay it for some time while he searched around for something he could use as a weapon.

The metallic sounds of pots and pans crashing to the ground competed with the loud buzzing of the locust wings.

The locust hit over a water fountain as well and water spilled all over the floor.

The creature's eyes that had been a dingy dark brown were now glowing a fierce red, he had angered the lieutenant locust.

He had to act fast; it was only a matter of seconds before the humongous insect would manage to free itself.

Brendan grabbed a fire extinguisher and sprayed the insect temporarily blinding it, then he poured cooking oil all over the body of the insect.

He spotted the matches box next to the tray of various condiments and sauces.

Just as he was about to reach for the box, the lieutenant locust recovered and lashed out at Brendan.

The blow was enough to send Brendan reeling across the floor even though he managed to hold on to the matches box it was in vain.

Such an impact caused the box to tear wide open and sent the matches all over the floor, the box he held onto for dear life was now empty.

Brendan now faced a new problem, every match stick he tried to light was wet, and would not spark.

He scrambled all over the floor searching for a dry one, there was still one on the counter behind the locust he planned to set on fire.

Brendan opened a nearby drawer and grabbed a handful of silver cutlery, he started aiming them at the locust with all his might.

It wasn't doing significant damage but it got the lieutenant locust to back off for a bit and Brendan ran to the table.

Finally he had a dry match stick in hand, he struck the side of the box and lit the flame of the match stick.

Having an idea of what Brendan was about to do, the lieutenant locust wasn't about to die so easily.

It flapped its wings quickly generating enough wind to out the match's stick and Brendan's face paled.

He was running out of ideas, the locust came after Brendan again attacking furiously with its deadly claws.

Brendan used a large dutch pot to shield himself from its claws, the locust slammed into him and the both of them went careening into the oven.

He was now wrestling with the locust while trying to keep its claws from piercing his heart.

That's when he felt a power that he didn't know lay dormant inside his body flare to life for the first time.

It was electrical in nature and enough to jolt and stun the poor locust who was surprised to find the human he had been fighting all along possessed spirit power.

Now the lieutenant locust was even more determined to kill and eat Brendan.

Triggered by Brendan's life being in danger and his racing heartbeat, the electric power flared again and surged from his palms into the locust.

With the cooking oil on it, the lieutenant locust was now on fire, it let out a heart wrenching pitiful wail, it could not bear the heat as its insides cooked.

Brendan opened the oven door and kicked the locust inside, trapping it inside so the smoke from the insect would not spread and set off the fire alarm.

After that incident Brendan didn't not go anywhere alone but his skin still crawled just by knowing that someone had tried to use the locust plague to end his life.

That person obviously had no intentions of giving up until Brendan was dead.

As he surveyed the faces of his friends Brendan could not picture any of them harming him the tension made his head throb in pain even more.

Everyone was told to leave the canteen by the warriors and they followed them down to the field beside the auditorium where the warriors had pitched tents for medical and food purposes.

While his friends got their wounds treated, Brendan could not stay still until he laid eyes on Charm who was conversing with Zinc and a warrior.

None of them noted his presence as they were all deep in conversation.

The warrior turned to Zinc who already had a healer patching him up and said, "I saw you fight that Locust General and also take on its lieutenant. You'll have a great future ahead of you if you join up with SDA."

Zinc remained silent, so Charm asked the questions that Zinc should have been asking.

"How come we never heard of the Spirit Defense Agency before, why show up now if you had the information to prevent this all along."

"Demons interfering with the human world is nothing new," the warrior scoffed. "Do you think this is the first time that they have fought, the last time the demons fought humans in a bid to enslave us? They utilized the dinosaurs in their war and those poor suckers are now extinct, at the rate the human race is going we are not that far behind."

"So what now… are you just going to crawl back into hiding now that the truth of demons are out?" asked Charm.
