The desire to fill the psychological deficiencies would be more like a spontaneous impulse that a highly intelligent creature normally had. Eraser thought that the root of his own race's abilities would eventually be the principle of expanding and stimulating those desires. The desire to trust and depend on was linked to the desire to escape doubts and anxiety when seeing the upside down—the desire to fill in the heart's gaps devastated by negative emotions.
