Killian rolled his eyes at his father. "You're so meanie! You scared my friend. I don't want to talk to you!"
With that, he grabbed Amara's hand and led her to the dining table. Seeing his son's attitude, Jace sighed heavily and walked to the kitchen to assist his wife. Once Killian saw that his father had left the room, he visibly relaxed. He helped Amara settle into a chair, then took a seat next to her.
"Amara, don't be scared. I'll protect you from my mean dad," he whispered with assurance. "Trust me, I'm super powerful."
"Really?" the little girl replied, her eyes wide with curiosity.
"Yes," Killian affirmed with confidence.
"But isn't he your dad?" she asked, tilting her head.
"So what? You're my friend, and I'll always protect you first," he whispered boldly.
Amara beamed at him. "Thank you."
