Chapter 20 - 20 Haunted House

Jungsu left the man unconscious on the floor, and on his way out, made sure to give a thumbs up to the cameras. He had to make his fight with the man seem planned and theatrical.

As Jungsu walked in search of his teammates, he was suddenly staring into his own dark eyes. The lights of the hallway cast a dark, gloomy shadow on his image, making him appear menacing in the moment in the large mirror. As Jungsu continued to stare into his own eyes, he recalled the clue that he had found.

You will find your answers in the abyss.

Jungsu nodded his head in understanding as he recalled the infamous quote by Nietzche, "If you stare into the abyss long enough, the abyss stares back at you."

Clenching his fist, he punched the mirror, causing the glass to shatter and fall to the ground in pieces. Looking at the back frame of the mirror for any clues, he frowned as he didn't find any.

Meanwhile, the staff of Double Shift were screaming in shock. Their faces had turned pale as they thought of the potential threat of another lawsuit. Bo-mi smacked her hand to her forehead as she stared into the screen at Jungsu.

Jungsu pursed his lips as he said to himself, "Maybe not."

Then he lifted the mirror from the wall and found behind it a piece of paper.

"They said in the abyss. Not behind it." Jungsu frowned as he wondered if they would send him the bill for the mirror. Sweeping up pieces of broken glass with his foot, he placed the broken mirror on top of the glass shards and looked around. His eyes stopped once he spotted a staff member dressed as a zombie, too afraid to move forward after he'd witnessed Jungsu punching the mirror.

"Ah. Excuse me?" Jungsu said to the zombie.

The man's eyes widened as he pointed at himself and mouthed 'Me?'.

Jungsu nodded his head and the man walked over with slow, reluctant steps, wondering what Jungsu had in plan for him.

"Could you make sure to redirect anyone who comes this way. The glass could be a hazard."

Maybe you should have thought about that before punching the mirror? The man thought to himself, confused by Jungsu's sudden care.

He didn't voice his thoughts however, too terrified by Jungsu and his fist to do anything but nod.

Jungsu walked on in search of his teammates and spotted Yeong-cheol and Na-yeon holding onto each other and their selfie sticks as they hid behind a pillar.

"Yeong-cheol... I swear if you don't keep quiet, I will leave you alone." Na-yeon spit out in a harsh whisper.

"Nooo! Okay, okay! I'll be quiet. Ahhhh! Why did we leave Jungsu?!" He cried.

Jungsu crouched down as he stood right behind them to avoid their cameras and said quietly, "It's human nature to run away from what you fear. I'm just surprised none of you froze."

Both of them let out a loud shout as they looked behind them, down at Jungsu. Jungsu rested his arms over his bent knees as he looked up at them.

"J-Jungsu!" Yeong-cheol shouted happily before closing his mouth sharply as Jungsu placed a finger over his lips and hushed him. Pointing with his eyes, he indicated for both of them to move around to the other side of the pillar. Jungsu knew that both of them would not appreciate seeing a woman dressed as a ghost, so he volunteered as tribute.

Moving to step outside of the pillar, despite the silent protests and hands grabbing at him to stay, Jungsu stood in the middle of the hallway. He noticed the moment the ghost lady spotted him, her eyes widened as he simply stood there. They stared at each other for a moment before Jungsu bowed.

Silence.

Then, the woman bowed as well and turned a full circle in disbelief as she thought of where to go next. As she finally decided on where to go, she turned around, unable to help herself from glancing back at the picturesque man standing alone in the empty and dark hallway.

Once the woman had finally left, Jungsu turned towards Yeong-cheol and Na-yeon who were staring at him with baffled eyes. Ushering both of them up, they held onto him as Jungsu led them in search of his other teammates.

Opening the clue up in his hands, he read silently, "Search no farther than the sky. No matter where you aim, you will land among the ____."

"What the hell do they think we are? Some kind of detectives?" Na-yeon cursed under her breath.

Jungsu immediately turned them around and moved back towards the star he had spotted on the walls. He had thought it was strange but assumed it was part of the decoration.

It was rather high on the walls, and Jungsu wondered if the staff had intended for them to climb onto each other's shoulders to reach it. Lucky for them, Jungsu could climb a wall without help. Backing away a couple steps, he jumped onto the wall and grabbed the star. Landing softly on the ground, he looked at the back of the star.

"I pass before the sun, yet I cast no shadow. Find me for the next clue."

Jungsu turned them around, mapping out the possible locations in the building for the clue. As they walked quickly through the halls, a man came running down the hall with a chain hanging down his body and blood flowing from his eyes.

"Ahh!" Na-yeon shouted and moved to run, while Yeong-cheol simply froze in the spot. However, Jungsu moved before anything else could happen. He ran towards the man swiftly, causing the man to stumble backwards as he met Jungsu's menacing eyes, and falling onto the floor once Jungsu was upon him.

Jungsu quickly grabbed the chain and tied the man's knees to his chest with the chain that he was carrying.

"Sorry." Jungsu said, then bowed, before ushering Na-yeon and Yeong-cheol past the man now lying on the floor in a state of confusion.

Jungsu then spotted Jae-ho and Ae-ri as they climbed down the set of stairs towards the basement.

"Ae-ri, Jae-ho! Over here!" Na-yeon whispered, and their heads turned towards them in relief as they quickly moved behind Jungsu.

"Where did you guys go? We were looking everywhere!" Jae-ho whispered quietly.

"That's a lie. He didn't want to go anywhere, said we should just 'wait for Jungsu'." Ae-ri huffed.

"Forget about that!" Jae-ho admonished. "Did you guys manage to find any clues?"

Jungsu held up the star in his hands, along with the two previous clues he had found.

"Oh... did anyone else find something?" There was silence as the group looked at one another.

"Ha, ha, ha." Yeong-cheol laughed. "T-this haunted house is a little too scary for me to be looking for clues, you know."

Jae-ho nodded his head in agreement as he moved in a little closer to Jungsu.

"So what's the clue?" Ae-ri asked.

"I pass before the sun, yet I cast no shadow. Find me for the next clue." Jungsu repeated out loud.

"Hm. Well does anyone have any ideas, or....?" Ae-ri blew out a breath.

"It's wind." Jungsu answered. "We have to find the AC vents."

Na-yeon, Yeong-cheol, Ae-ri, and Jae-ho all looked at Jungsu, then at one another in understanding. They looked back at Jungsu in scrutiny and Jungsu simply shrugged off their appraisal by walking forward quickly without them.

"W-wait!" Na-yeon screamed as she grabbed ahold of his arm, pressing her chest into him.

Jungsu was rather irritated at the touch, but he didn't brush her off knowing that if he was caught doing so on camera, Na-yeon's numerous fans would come after him.

"Oh! There's the AC vents!" Ae-ri shouted, pointing at the large vents right next to a door.

Right after she'd screamed it, a woman walked out wearing a white dress, and a long black wig. Her eyes were painted in dark shadows, and her mouth a large red smile.

"AAAHHHHHHH!!!" Yeong-cheol screamed and the other contestants followed.

Jungsu thought to himself, Not again.

The woman approached them in sharp and rigid movements. Then she was on the floor on all fours and running towards them. Her hair was swinging back and forth, her vision blocked as she moved forward regardless.

Everyone started backing away quickly as the woman advanced on them. However they all stopped moving once they saw Jungsu kneeling down on the ground.

The woman kept running but stopped only when she fell into a pair of arms. They were rather strong arms that held her in place and despite her desire to burrow into them further, she pulled back slightly and parted her hair. What she saw had her heart skip a beat, stop, and then excelerate at full speed.

Jungsu held the woman in his arms, hiding her face from his teammates as he urged them to go retrieve the clue.

"I'm sorry. This must be uncomfortable." Jungsu said, and the woman felt herself floating in the air at his words.

"I-it's not a problem. Not at all." She whispered into his chest, cursing her hair that kept getting in the way of her face and him.

After a couple moments that seemed like eternity, and yet also felt too short, Jungsu let go of her.

The woman reached out her arms at the loss, then stopped herself as she realized she was supposed to be a ghost.

"Now we can run." Jungsu said.

Then all hell broke loose as the woman ran in earnest after them. Jungsu also ran, deciding that he needed to let the staff do their job.

"What's the next clue?" Jungsu asked Na-yeon who held the paper in her fist as she ran.

"Blue blood?..." Na-yeon trailed off in confusion.

They ran up the stairs and through the hallways, taking a right, and then a left at the end for the hallway. Jungsu's eyes caught something on the doorknob of one of the doors. It was purple tape.

Jungsu turned around, as did the others, and opened the door. As he entered inside, he noted that the room was even darker than any other areas of the building. Jungsu could just about make out hanging items that swayed from side to side, all lined up in a several lines. Slowly moving forward, he felt the tight grip of Yeong-cheol on his shoulder.

"Stay close, and keep moving." He said as he weaved his way through the items. He noticed a staff member hiding within the items, and heard the sound of a chainsaw.

Jae-ho let out a high pierced shriek that surprised Jungsu.

They kept moving, not wanting to mention how high Jae-ho had managed to scream. They could practically feel the embarrassment rolling off from him.

Jungsu felt around in the air, seeing a bunch of smaller items hanging from the air around them. He grabbed onto one of them as he felt the cool metal of a key. Pulling it down, he walked faster through the maze until they reached the end.

Jungsu saw the door illuminated by dim purple lights, and finally jammed the key into the keyhole, and twisted the doorknob.

They all cheered, with the exception of Jungsu, as they exited the dark room. The light of the outside bit into Jungsu's eyes and he squinted. He spotted the staff staring at them with tight smiles on their faces.

Bo-mi was currently looking at Jungsu with a furious expression, and Jungsu wondered what he had done to anger her.

"Jungsu!" She started.

"This was supposed to be a team effort, not a one man show!!!"

Jungsu nodded his head in understanding.

"But then it would have taken longer?..."

"That's what was meant to happen!" Bo-mi cried. "You solved everything far too quickly!"

"I'm sorry." Jungsu bowed his head, but Bo-mi was not done yet.

"And who told you to walk tie down the staff? And let's not even mention you charming my ghost with a HUG?!!" Bo-mi shouted and Jungsu winced as she got closer and closer to him.

"They were supposed to scare you! Not you scare them!!! And why did you punch the mirror?!!!" Bo-mi let out a deafening roar and Jungsu flinched back at the surprising power Bo-mi's voice had.

"I apologize." Jungsu bowed once more to the humour of the staff and contestants. The camera zoomed into Jungsu's grave eyes and Bo-mi's admonishing face.
