Chapter 136 - Chapter 136: The Boss

Working with someone like Vin Diesel, it's unlikely many would want to continue collaborating with him. However, as long as there's profit to be made, those issues become irrelevant in Hollywood. Nobody wants to fight against massive profits.

For "The Fast and the Furious," "The Mummy Returns" serves as a free promotional platform.

Matthew learned that a trailer for "The Fast and the Furious" would be played during the screening of "The Mummy Returns."

As the release of "The Mummy Returns" approached, Matthew was surprised to find Universal Pictures did not include him in the pre-screening promotional activities. The promotion focused on Rachel Weisz and Brendan Fraser, the lead actors, followed by Arnold Vosloo and John Hannah.

Even the released trailers didn't feature the Scorpion King.

Had it not been for the two posters of the Scorpion King already published, Matthew might have doubted whether his role had been cut entirely.

A week before the film's premiere, the crew, Helen Herman, and Matthew formally discussed his participation in post-screening promotions, providing him with a detailed plan and schedule.

According to the crew, including the decision not to feature Matthew and the Scorpion King in pre-screening promotions, was part of a carefully crafted strategy by Universal Pictures based on internal screening results. They believed the Scorpion King could be one of the film's highlights!

With his growing understanding of the film industry, Matthew knew that trailers should highlight the essence of the film without revealing all its surprises, to maintain the audience's sense of wonder and positively affect the film's reviews and box office performance.

This strategy made him look forward to the film even more.

On the day of the premiere, Matthew went to the styling studio recommended by Helen Herman for his makeover, offering a one-stop service including costume rental, which saved a lot of hassle.

The service was expensive, costing Matthew $4000, including the rental of clothing, a watch, and a car.

On his way to the Grauman's Chinese Theatre in a black Cadillac, he reflected on the cost of such events. Participating in them frequently could quickly bankrupt someone with his finances.

The Cadillac arrived at the entrance of a large white tent at the theater. Unlike the premiere of "Gladiator" he attended last year, Universal Pictures had set up a tent above the red carpet to shelter guests from the rain that had been falling in Los Angeles.

Matthew, being part of the crew, was scheduled to enter later but arrived relatively early.

"Over here, Matthew!" Upon entering the tent, Paul Walker called out to him. Matthew quickly approached, greeting, "Long time no see, Paul."

Paul Walker bumped fists with Matthew, complimenting, "You look sharp."

Matthew responded with mock arrogance, "Can't help being naturally gifted."

Paul leaned in, whispering, "Michelle Rodriguez has been missing you since you left the crew."

Matthew had no interest in Michelle Rodriguez, aware of her reputation from Jordana Brewster. He changed the subject, "Where are Michelle and Jordana?"

"They're busy," Paul thought for a moment, then added, "Probably didn't want to see Vin Diesel. I'm bound by a contract clause, but they're not."

Hearing Vin Diesel's name, Matthew inquired about the crew's situation after his departure.

Paul sighed, "It's been tough. Vin Diesel is even more difficult than the most demanding stars I've heard of..." He didn't want to dwell on the subject, "Anyway, it's over now, no need to see his sour face again."

Matthew asked if only they had come from the "Fast and Furious" crew.

Paul checked his watch, "He's probably going to be late."

As more people entered the tent, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz arrived.

Matthew, familiar with both, introduced Paul Walker, who briefly greeted them before stepping aside.

"You've gained weight, Brendan," Matthew casually chatted, "And Rachel, you're even more beautiful."

Rachel smiled, and Brendan clapped Matthew on the shoulder, "How did you get so tan?"

Matthew touched his face, "Had to stay in North Africa for a few months."

"You must be afraid of the sun," Rachel pointed out, "I filmed in Morocco and didn't change at all."

Matthew nodded, complimenting, "Your skin looks even better than the last time we met."

Rachel beamed at the compliment.

"That's because Rachel is nourished by love," Brendan whispered, "She's captured a director's heart."

"Really?" Matthew feigned gossip, "Rachel, who has won the heart of such a beautiful and talented woman?"

Rachel openly shared, "His name is Darren Aronofsky, a director."

Unfamiliar with the name, Matthew assumed he was a lesser-known director, but Brendan added, "He's a Harvard genius, recognized in the industry as a rising star among directors."

Matthew agreed, "A perfect match for our talented Rachel."

Remembering Rachel's breakup with Sam Mendes during "The Mummy Returns" filming, Matthew noted Hollywood's ease in changing partners.

Changing the subject, Brendan asked about Matthew's recent work.

Matthew joked about being unemployed, to which Brendan assured, "I'll keep an eye out for opportunities for you."

As the premiere's red carpet event began, the group remained, waiting for their turn after the guests seeking exposure.

"The Mummy Returns," being a sequel to the successful "The Mummy," was a major investment by Universal Pictures, released at the start of the summer season for its drawing power.

More people entered the tent, and as Rachel greeted Darren Aronofsky, Matthew stood alone. Paul Walker approached, ready to walk the red carpet, mentioning Vin Diesel's expected lateness.

Matthew, aware of Vin Diesel's reputation, prepared for any confrontation, his gaze sharp.

Vin Diesel approached, stopping six feet away, glaring at Matthew with anger, "Matthew Horner! Did you do this?"
