Chapter 2 - chapter 1: Tale of a Hero [I]

400 years later.

*Buzz* (Error no Spark Essence found)

The machine blared for the third time there was no mistaking it, he was born without a spark essence.

[My name is Shiro Megumi and I'm the first person in 100 years to be born without a spark essence] Our main character 'Shiro' narrated, [The one thing needed to materialize a skill, without it someone was essentially useless]

Whispers and chatter filled the testing hall. " Is it true?",

"He really has no spark essence?" someone asked

"How's that possible?"

"How useless can someone get?"

These were among the remarks made by the other applicants present

Shiro was downcast, the doctors had said there was nothing there but he had hoped, "prayed", to whoever was above for them to be wrong, for something to happen, but now the results were staring him in the face.

The annual national spark-essence test held at different sites throughout the nation was a 3-day exercise aimed at selecting talented individuals and helping teenagers choose their class of training for the future of heroes in society, be it hunter or hero, the students had 6 classes they could be placed in based on spark-essence:

Craft-Class: specializing in rune magic and enchantments used for crafting magical equipment and devices. They were mostly non-combatant and made tools used in various fields, from medicine to construction.

Warrior-Class: specializing in close-quarters hand-to-hand combat and could use aura to enhance their physics giving them immense speed and strength compared to an average person.

Mage-Class: Specializing in range attack spells as well as magic defense. They could also use summoning magic to summon spirits and magic beasts to aid in battle.

Knight-Class: Weapon specialist that uses divine and magical artifacts in combat, they were also known for their ability to wield holy magic (divine power).

Support-Class: This class specializes in healing magic as well as buff and de-buff spells. They mostly aid the WARRIOR-CLASS in combat.

Saint-Class: This is the rarest of all the classes, there was a 1 in 100 million chance of being born a saint-class. They could use the ability of 2 classes, which was impossible for a normal person. They could also wield holy magic on top of it, which is very effective against the phantoms. It is believed that a single saint class is as good as 100 knight class which is said to be the second strongest class.

Sadly, for Shiro, he doesn't belong in any of the classes.

"Mr. Shiro I'm sorry to say, but you're gonna have to leave, the rest participants want to take their turn," One of the test officials said.

"Seriously, how is it possible for one to be born without spark essence, you're an abomination to society," a student said as he glared at Shiro in disgust.

"I even wonder what your parent would think of you?" the same student asked, Shiro gasped in shock when he heard those words.

'He's right, what would mum think of me now' Shiro thought with a disheartened expression.

"I'm sure they must feel disappointed for giving birth to a creature like you, in fact, I'm sure they must wish they shouldn't have given birth to someone like you, you're a disgrace to your family" the student peers added as he grinned at Shiro.

Hearing those words, Shiro began to tear up, "Seriously, how have you survived this l…" the student was interrupted.

"That's enough Mr. Daichi" a voice commanded.

The student now identified as Daichi turned to see it was the head of the test site 'Mr. Yamamoto' that spoke to him.

Mr. Yamamoto was an elderly man looking to be in his late 60s, one could tell he was well-built beneath his suit, probably from his past years as a hunter

"y-yes sir" Daichi stuttered under the gaze of the man, bowed, and apologized, passing a side-glared at Shiro as he did.

The head of the test site stares at Shiro, then closes his eyes and sighs.

*Sigh* "Boy…Go home" Mr. Yamamoto spoke, hearing this Shiro snapped back to his senses, cleaned his tears, and bowed to the test officials present.

"Thank you all for your time," he said as he bowed and then left the room.

"Why did you do that sir, there's no point wasting time on someone like him," Daichi said to Mr. Yamamoto.

"That boy is already going through enough; he doesn't need you to add to his problem" The elderly man glared at the teen.

"Now, hear me well all of you, I don't want this matter to leave this room, and if I find out that any of you tells a single soul what just happened in this room…" he said as a giant monstrous figure stepped out of the shadow, muscular structure, and red skin with scars all over its body, it carried two giant swords at it back. It had an Oni demon-like face. The monster stood beside him.
