Theo ended the call with a heavy heart, his mind swirling with concern. All he wanted was for Emily to return to the United States as soon as possible. He needed to keep Iris safe, and that meant keeping Emily far from her.
After discussing work matters, Daniel and Iris fell into an awkward silence. Daniel rubbed his hands together, trying to appear casual as he asked, "So, he really is your boyfriend, isn't he?"
Iris looked up, meeting Daniel's probing gaze. After a brief pause, she confirmed, "Yes."
Daniel had anticipated this, but the straightforward confirmation still sent a shiver through him. He stood up abruptly, a bitter smile on his face, and said, "I wish you both a lasting relationship." Avoiding Iris's eyes, he quickly left the hospital room as if fleeing the scene.
As Daniel stepped out, he saw Theo leaning against the wall, lost in thought. He nodded slightly at Theo and then walked away.
