Chapter 12 - Cute Little Angel wants Icecream

Lily pouted in frustration, her tiny brows furrowing in an adorable display of displeasure. "Why are you late?" she asked, her frustration contrasting with the undeniable cuteness of her expression.

Alex, sensing the need to appease his young companion, quickly apologized, "Sorry! The distance is quite far from my work, and I had to run."

Lily, however, remained resolute. "No! I won't forgive you," she declared with a hint of playful stubbornness.

Understanding that a more persuasive approach was needed, Alex contemplated for a moment before deciding to lift Lily's spirits. "You know, I was thinking of buying you ice cream as a special treat if you forgive me. But maybe I should cancel that plan..." he teased, a mischievous twinkle in his eye.

"Ice cream?" Lily's eyes widened with excitement, her frustration instantly transforming into delight. "Yay!" she exclaimed, the prospect of a sweet treat melting away any lingering traces of discontent.

As Alex and Lily sauntered down the lively streets, they reached the ice cream parlor, a haven of frozen delights.

"So, what's your pick, Lily?" Alex inquired, his eyes scanning the colorful menu.

Lily's eyes widened with excitement as she enthusiastically pointed towards multiple items. "I want this and this too," she declared, her finger dancing over the menu.

Alex, adopting a serious tone, countered, "Only one."

"Noo! I want two!" Lily protested, her determination evident.

"But, your mom will get angry if you catch a cold," Alex teased, adding a touch of humor to the situation.

Lily pondered for a moment, considering the consequences. With a dramatic sigh, she conceded, "Fine, just one then."

Savoring the sweetness of the ice cream, Lily and Alex meandered through the streets on their way home. The remnants of the delightful treat still lingered on their taste buds, and a comfortable silence enveloped them.

As they approached their neighborhood, the distant sounds of laughter and playful shouts caught their attention. Turning a corner, they discovered a quaint playground bathed in the warm hues of the setting sun.

Lily's eyes lit up with anticipation. "Can we stop for a while, Alex?" she pleaded, her enthusiasm infectious.

"Absolutely, let's take a little detour," Alex agreed, and they entered the playground. The soft giggles of children playing and the rhythmic creaking of the swings created a harmonious background.

Lily darted towards the swings, her laughter blending seamlessly with the joyous squeaks of the well-loved playground equipment. Alex, basking in the simple delight of the moment, watched her with a genuine smile.

"Push me, Alex!" Lily called out, each request accompanied by a burst of laughter as she soared higher with each rhythmic push. Alex, fully immersed in the joy of the moment, became the orchestrator of Lily's airborne adventures.

The sun dipped below the horizon, casting a gentle twilight glow over the neighborhood. Feeling the tinge of exhaustion, Lily yawned, her little frame swaying with weariness.

"Ready to head home, Lily?" Alex inquired, crouching down to her eye level.

"I'm so tired, Alex," Lily admitted with a small, contented sigh.

With a tender smile, Alex scooped Lily into his arms, cradling her gently. She nestled against his shoulder, her eyes already closing with the sweet surrender of sleep.

As Alex carried Lily home, the soft glow of streetlights illuminated their path. Lily's rhythmic breathing and the warmth of her presence against his chest created an intimate tableau of familial connection. The world around them quieted, leaving only the soft whispers of a tranquil evening.

Approaching their apartment, Alex opened the door with utmost care, not wanting to disturb Lily's peaceful slumber. He tiptoed to his room, adorned with the soft glow of a nightlight, and gently laid her down on his bed.

In the midst of Lily's slumber, as Alex gently tucked her into bed, he overheard a faint mumble escaping from her tired lips. Intrigued, he leaned in, catching the soft words that fluttered in the quiet room.

"I wish Alex could be forever with me," Lily whispered, her innocent expression revealing a longing that tugged at Alex's heart.

The words lingered in the air, carrying a weight that transcended the simplicity of a child's bedtime chatter. Alex, struck by the unexpected depth of Lily's sentiment, stood there for a moment, contemplating the profound impact of his presence in her life.

"I'm sorry, brother. I'm late!" Issy entered the house, her voice filled with a mix of regret and sincerity.

"Shh! Lily is tired," Alex whispered, gesturing towards the peacefully sleeping Lily on his bed, the very picture of innocence and tranquility.

Issy, catching sight of Lily, couldn't help but smile at the wholesome scene before her. Lily's serene sleep painted a moment of calm in their lives, a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of the world outside.

"I will make dinner for Lily too," Issy offered, her commitment to taking care of her younger sister reflecting the bonds of family that were mending and strengthening.

As Issy busied herself in the kitchen, Alex stepped out onto the balcony. The evening sun cast a warm glow, and he found solace in the quiet moments. With a cigarette in hand, he looked out at the fading daylight, memories of Lily's innocent words echoing in his mind. Feeling a subtle connection between the present and those innocent expressions, he reached into his pocket and retrieved a weathered envelope – a letter he received at the tender age of 18.
