Chapter 16 - It's just because of me!

Emma and Lily entered the hospital room with a sense of urgency, anxious about Alex's well-being. As Emma hastily opened the door, the room revealed a surprisingly lighthearted scene – Alex, comfortably seated on his bed, happily munching on apples. Thompson and Mia were engaged in a conversation in the corner, their expressions now relaxed.

"I thought it was serious," Emma admitted, the tension dissipating as relief washed over her. Lily, sensing the change in atmosphere, quickly approached Alex with a mix of concern and curiosity.

"Alex, what happened to you?" Lily asked with concern evident on her innocent face.

Alex, Thompson, and Mia exchanged glances, appreciating Lily's genuine worry. Thompson took the lead in responding, "Alex had a little fight with a bad guy, and he got a tiny injury. He's going to be just fine."

"Really?" Lily turned her attention to Alex, seeking confirmation.

"It's nothing serious, Lily," Alex reassured her, offering a comforting smile.

Relieved by the news, Lily couldn't contain her emotions. With tear-filled eyes, she hugged Alex tightly. "I thought I would miss you," she admitted, her voice trembling with a mix of relief and vulnerability.

The hospital room door burst open as Issy, her eyes filled with tears, rushed inside. Her heart raced as she saw her brother, Alex, lying on the bed. Without a second thought, she ran to him and enveloped him in a tight embrace.

"Here comes my cry baby," Alex teased, attempting to lighten the heavy atmosphere with a gentle smile. Issy, however, couldn't hold back her tears as she clung to her brother, grateful to find him relatively unharmed.

"Why didn't you guys inform me earlier?" she questioned, her voice choked with emotion.

Issy, with tear-streaked cheeks, hugged Alex tightly, finding solace in the fact that her brother was safe. Lily, still standing by the bedside, observed this emotional exchange with a gentle expression, her innocent eyes reflecting the mixture of emotions in the room.

"Because you would lose control," Alex gently explained, offering understanding to Issy's emotional outburst. His reassuring words, coupled with the comforting pat on her back, conveyed a sense of brotherly love and support.

Despite Alex's attempt to ease her worries, Issy continued to cling to him, her emotions overflowing. Lily, sensing the need for comfort, extended her small hand and lightly patted Issy on the back, a gesture of empathy beyond her years.

Emma, witnessing the scene, felt a wave of relief wash over her. With the assurance that Alex's injury was minor, she turned her attention to the practical details. "So when will you return home?" she inquired.

"It's just a small wound. I'll be discharged in a few hours," Alex reassured, his calm demeanor and the supportive atmosphere in the room gradually dispelling the lingering tension.

After spending a few hours at the hospital, Alex finally returned home to a caring environment. Issy, displaying her nurturing side, took charge and declared, "I will make dinner for you, Brother."

Emma, eager to contribute, chimed in, "I will also help you with that."

Mia and Lily accompanied Alex in his room, where the atmosphere was a mix of relief and concern. Mia, grappling with guilt, approached Alex with a somber expression. "I am sorry, Alex. It's because of me that you got hurt," she confessed, her regret palpable.

The atmosphere in the room lightened as Mia managed a small smile. Lily, sensing the camaraderie, joined in the conversation.

Alex, are you a superhero? Lily asked with wide-eyed innocence.

No, Lily. I'm just a regular guy who looks out for his friends, Alex replied, ruffling Lily's hair.

"But you are a superhero to me!" she exclaimed, her bright smile lighting up the room. Alex and Mia chuckled in response to Lily's adoration.

Mia, joining in the playful banter, added with a grin, "Yeah, you're a superhero to me too!" The camaraderie among them fostered an atmosphere of warmth and shared appreciation.

Issy and Emma, having prepared the dinner, announced that the meal was ready. The makeshift group gathered around the table, a mix of delicious aromas filling the air. Lily, with her infectious enthusiasm, skipped over to her Alex's side, eager to assist.

Seeing Alex having a little trouble due to the wound on his hand, Lily took the initiative. In a heartwarming and cute gesture, she picked up a fork and attempted to feed him. "Here, Alex, let me help!" she insisted, her eyes shining with determination.

Alex, touched by Lily's sweet gesture, played along with a smile. "Oh, thank you, my little helper!" he responded, leaning slightly towards the fork Lily offered. The room filled with soft laughter as Lily, with utmost seriousness, aimed to feed her dad.

Issy and Emma exchanged glances, their hearts warmed by the adorable scene unfolding. Mr. Thompson, observing the familial bonds at play, couldn't help but appreciate the genuine care among this unique group.

As the dinner concluded, Alex and Lily retreated to Alex's room for some playful moments together. Meanwhile, Mia and Issy took charge of cleaning up the dishes in the kitchen, engaging in a task that brought a semblance of normalcy to the eventful evening.

As they scrubbed dishes and arranged them neatly, Mia's thoughts weighed heavily on her mind. She couldn't shake off the guilt she felt for Alex getting hurt because of her situation with Ethan. After a moment of contemplation, she decided to confide in Issy.

"Hey, Issy," Mia began hesitantly, drying a plate with a cloth. "I can't help but feel responsible for what happened to Alex. If I hadn't been involved with Ethan, maybe none of this would have occurred."

Issy, recognizing the sincerity in Mia's voice, turned to her with a reassuring smile. "Mia, you can't blame yourself for everything. Alex chose to step in because he cares about you. We can't predict every situation, and sometimes things happen beyond our control."

Mia nodded, appreciating Issy's understanding. "I just don't want anyone to get hurt because of me," she admitted, her eyes reflecting a mix of remorse and concern.

Issy gently placed a hand on Mia's shoulder, offering comfort. "Alex wouldn't want you to carry that burden. He cares about you, and sometimes, caring for someone involves facing challenges together. We'll support each other through thick and thin."

Mia's expression softened as she absorbed Issy's words. The weight on her shoulders seemed to lighten, realizing that the support of this unconventional family extended beyond just blood ties.

"Thanks, Issy," Mia said, a small smile forming on her lips. "I appreciate your understanding."

Issy nodded, emphasizing, "We're in this together, Mia. You're not alone, and neither is Alex. Let's focus on the present and support each other, no matter what comes our way."

The two friends continued with the dishes.
