Chapter 22 - Chapter 22 – Nate's Sacrifice

Nate had put Stutter out of commission with his taser and Damon had put Scarface into a state of extreme misery, where he was vanquished by unfathomable pain and agony.

Damon's hands were bloodied from plunging the remote control into the man's eye and as he rose from the ground, he felt fuzzy from the impact of hitting the door and falling to the ground with the heavy force with which he was thrown away.

Damon put his hand on his head and rubbed it to numb the ache he got from a banging headache.

Just as his vision cleared, he saw Nate's lips part and utter words that he did not understand.

"Get out of here, Damon! Run!"

Nate smiled right after telling his brother to flee.

Damon, however, was taken aback by his brother's words.

He didn't understand while Nate would say such a thing.

"Come on, Nate. Let's go!"

He gestured for Nate to come with him but Nate sat still in his wheelchair, smiling and nodding to Damon.

This was a sign from Nate that he should escape now that he had the chance.

"Go," Nate whispered but slowly enough for Damon to read it from his lips.

Damon tried again and again, but his elder brother did not change his mind.

He looked around to see Stutter lying on the floor of the hallway in a weakened and disoriented state.

To his side was Scarface, who was struggling with the object stuck into his eye.

Nate and Damon knew that only one of them could escape, and that person was Damon.

Nate wouldn't get far with his bad legs, so why waste the opportunity when his brother had two perfectly working legs that he could run with.

That was Nate's ideology about the whole situation.

While Nate had already accepted this reality, Damon still believed that they could both make it out of the building somehow and alive too.

Honestly, his thoughts were laughable but that was just Damon being as optimistic as he could in a hellish circumstance.

Damon's resolve was stronger now that the two unknown men who had come for them were not in the right state of mind to act.

"Get out of here!" Nate shouted at his little brother.

"But—"

"No buts, Damon! Just go! I'll catch up but someone has to buy time!"

But what were the odds of survival after buying the said time?

It was absolutely zero.

The veil of disbelief and unrealistic optimism that Damon had worn over his face with his own hands was beginning to tear apart with every word that Nate uttered.

Nate's words were sharp scissors that cut through the blinding fabric that shrouded his brother's mind, cutting them into pieces so that he began to see the truth for what it was.

One of them had to stay back so the other could have the chance of escaping.

That was the truth and as much as he didn't want to believe it, Damon was starting to see it.

Nate already made his decision and was currently trying to enforce it on his little brother, not minding what Damon wanted.

He did so to relieve Damon of the burden of having to make that hard choice…

That difficult, heartbreaking choice of deciding who lives, between him and Nate.

He knew the kind of person his little brother was and without a doubt, Nate was certain that if Damon had his way, then he was going to let Nate live without a second thought.

Nate saw things differently from his younger brother.

His life had changed drastically since his accident and he had developed a more self-reflective nature.

Damon was still at the door, stiff and dumbfounded as he gazed at his brother.

"Go, Damon! Find Beth too and save her."

As the last words from a loved one, Nate's words were engraved in Damon's heart and mind.

His eyes watered and tears dribbled down his cheeks.

He had only one chance at it and that window of escape was almost closing.

Stutter's fingers regained a flicker of movement and he groaned from the discomfort he still felt.

Scarred Mouth managed to pull the remote control out of his eyes as well as his shards of his dark glasses but that left a bleeding hole on his face from which blood oozed down to his suit and floor of the room.

Nate noticed the movement of the two men.

"Damon!" he shouted. "Get… the… hell… out of here!"

Nate's voice snapped Damon back into the real world.

With eyes that were filled with tears and a heart that weighed a ton, Damon rose to his feet and fled from the room before the men recovered well enough to move well.

He cried as he ran for his life, knowing that he might not get to see his brother again.

Nate lowered his head and smiled as he muttered a few words under his breath.

"Please be safe, Damon. You too, Beth. You both are all you two have left."
