Chapter 16 - Battle with the Slime King

"Shit!" David muttered as the Slime King looked at him with googly eyes before puffing up its body and releasing the absorbed spells towards David.

Reacting swiftly, David rolled to the side with agile precision, narrowly evading the onslaught of magical projectiles. However, his relief was short-lived as the Slime King, now significantly lighter, demonstrated an unexpected agility. With a disturbingly graceful leap, the monster defied its gelatinous form, propelling itself into the air with surprising speed, poised to execute a devastating body slam upon David.

David tried to dodge the slam, but he was too late, as the monster came crashing on his back, severely depleting his HP.

[ HP 60/120]

"ARGH", he groaned in pain.

"I knew it would be tough, but I need to find some way to defeat it", David thought. He rose before glaring at the slime king, "You have messed up big time."

He held the magic staff like a bat before lunging at the monster, trying to deal some physical damage. "have some of this!" he grinned, smacking the monster's head with the staff.

David believed this tactic might work, but he forgot that King-level monsters are born with extra skills. The Slime King instantly turned its soft gelatinous body to solid and rock hard, which made David feel that he had attacked a wall.

[ Durability: 5/100]

"God fucking damnit. Why do I have to fight against the strongest Slime to exist!"

The Slime also moved its blob-like body towards David, with a smug on its face.

David stepped back, creating some distance between the monster and himself. "So it can change the hardness of its body, making it hard or soft, causing it to have both physical and Magical Resistance."

"But it can only maintain one of those forms at one time!" he thought and tried to use this downside to the monster's skill to his advantage. He un-summoned his staff and held his hands in the air.

"You got me, slimy; you are better than I expected." David smiled as he started to walk towards the Slime. "But now you got to deal with these puppies", he said as he clenched his fists tightly.

"Meet Peaches and Herb", he grinned and leapt towards the monster. The Slime expelled a barrage of Flames towards David, but he blocked the attack using his bare fists.

[20/120 HP]

David could feel the strength leaving his body, but he knew the Slime would be the most vulnerable after an attack. He toughed himself through the flames as he landed a punch on the Slime's body.

The Slime retaliated by hardening its body, and David could hear the noise of his bones cracking.

[10/120 HP]

"You're done now, heh", David grinned, as suddenly he conjured a Lesser Lightning spell using his hands, dealing heavy damage to the Slime before it could change its form.

The Slime roared, writhing in pain due to the intense electric shock from being hit by the spell at point-blank range. Still, David had already leapt towards the monster for another attack. This time, the monster was confused, not knowing what David would do, and he took advantage of this as he summoned his staff, smacking the Slime on the head with it.

[ You are the first human to defeat all Variants of a slime (Normal/Elite/King). You have received the title 'Slime Slayer I']

"Keep the rewards coming, baby", he muttered as he picked up the drops.

"A Rare Artefact!" David shouted as he quickly checked it out.

"It's a single-use item, but it might be useful", David thought and equipped it.

"Let's get this quest done with. I am cracking some heads if I don't get a good class", David grumbled on his way to James's house.

He knocked on the door and noticed that James was waiting inside for him.

"I have been waiting for you", James smiled.

"Really?" David asked.

"Well, not really. But I wanted to sound cooler than that bitch Carlos", James sighed.

"Anyway, here is the monster core, " David muttered, handing over the core to James.

"Good job."

[ You have Completed the Quest: Prove your worth by killing the Slime King alone. Reward: Letter of Recommendation to Sir Rowe (Legendary), +10% favourability with James, 1 level up]

"Amazing!" David was satisfied with the rewards. "A free level-up saved me at least a few hours of farming."

"You can now take this letter to Master Rowe. He will test you, and if you are to his liking, he will give you a class that you want", James said.

"Where can I find your Master Rowe?" David asked.

"Graveyard", the wizard said, smiling.

"Oh? So you recommended me to a dead guy? For fucks sake, I will bash your SKU-" David started to shout at James and summoned his heavy staff.

"No, He is not dead. He works at the graveyard", James said, pressing his head. "And what the hell are you doing to that poor staff. It's all broken!!" he said, looking at the sorry state the staff was in.

"Oh, okay, thanks. And maybe your assistant Rose is putting in cheap materials in the staff. This happened after I smacked the Slime King with it." David regained his composure and dashed out of the house.

"Why are you smacking a monster with a staff when you are a mage? He is just like him; what have I done!" James shouted, but David was long gone.

David rushed to the graveyard, "Master Rowe, your new pupil is here", he shouted as he waved the recommendation letter.

Suddenly, someone smacked a staff on David's head with a swift and precise motion.

"OUCH! Who is that bastard to use my tricks against me?" David shouted but realised that the recommendation letter was missing from his hands.

"So James recommended you?" a coarse and powerful voice rang as an old man appeared before David, reading the recommendation letter.

"Nice to meet you, brat", the old man grinned.
