Chapter 268 - Unwelcome Visit

We're a short distance from the manor when we hear May's yelp of what might be pain or might be fear, but it's clear enough that's where it's coming from that neither one of us hesitate.

We don't look to each other.

I don't bother to wait to see if he's keeping up.

The only thing on my mind right now is...

Terrible images.

Terrible thoughts of what might have happened to a pure, innocent little girl just because I wasn't looking at her for a few moments.

Of the idea that maybe I've found my happiness long enough now, and the world's just about to start taking it all away from me again, punishing me for some indiscretion I've never known the reason or identity of in any of my lives.

Of how much rage I feel at the idea of the world, or any entity, inflicting that upon me and those I care about.

I wish to run faster.

Fast just isn't fast enough.
