Chapter 51 - What can they do

"Ridiculous. Never knew that the kingdom had signed this agreement with such content with our potential enemy. Something must be done to these 'priests', else the country will not be in our control a few years later." Aria say madly.

Serina besides seeing her mad decided to comfort her.

"Considering the positive aspects of the agreement, we also sent our missionaries to the USSR. Do you know how they fared? I couldn't get any news back then." Serina inquires about Aria. As someone who has been to the USSR, mentally, Serina believes their mission could never succeed, yet she remains curious about the outcomes.

Aria was silent for a moment.

"No. We lost contact with them when they reached the USSR a few days later. Their 'life light' is still on and hasn't gone out. They are not dead, we believe the only reason we lost contact with them is they don't want to keep their communication with us."

Ahh, failed to comfort her but made her more emotional.

"Let us see how will these guys explain."

Aria gently waved her hand, Serina only felt a moment of blackness in front of her eyes, the next moment she realised that they were on a high point not far away from the gathering. In front of them, are a group of people discussing the 'Priest'.

"Why didn't anyone do something about it, you all should know what are the consequences of letting him continue the talk." Aria asked the few men in front of her coldly. These people are the nobles and landlords that own and controll the land here.

Soon, a man came in front of him.

"Great greetings, madam. I am the one in charge of this area, may you ask me anything you are curious about."

Aria does not talk any nonsense with him, get close to him and say.

"I do not like to repeat, now, tell me why didn't you do something."

The man trembling answers,

"My ma'am, there is nothing we can do, these people are from the USSR, if we kill them it is an act of war, I don't want to get the responsibility for the war. I also tried to mind control them, but it was difficult, these men are like machines as if their mind operates on principles foreign to our understanding. I can't find a weakness in this guy like there is no fear in him, not afraid of death whatsoever. Additionally, I received orders from my supervisor to stop applying mind control on the Soviets."

"It is not like one of them, it is like every one of them, I managed different villages before I got the order, I went where the Soviets were reported, and all mind control failed."

Aria remains silent, the deep eyes seem to be thinking about something. For the time being, she was responsible for interrogation and bodyguard security, which caused her not sensitive to what was happening outside the world.

"How about making their death into an accident? Have you all tried before, I am professional at it."

The man sighs again.

"It won't work, some others tried this trick before, and the next day after the guy doing this, his body was found in his house, and his head exploded. On the surface, it seems like there is only one Soviet which is the 'Priest' has entered the village, but in the dark, more have disguised as a farmer, spying into the village. It is difficult for us to find them out, we did not record the farmer who was originally inside the village or who was from outside. These people are more professional on it, they know how to differentiate a real accident and a fake one."

"Any instruction from your supervisor about what all this happened?" Aria asked.

"Nothing ma'am, or I can say their orders are chaotic. Some said just killed all the outsiders who were not from the village, but others said it was a bad idea because refugees who were part of the outsiders would then run to the Soviet's side. In the future, they may lead the way for the Soviet army and become their guide."

There is never a lack of refugees in the Karak, low production and uneven distribution of food there is always starvation in the country, the only problem is whether it is on a big scale or small scale.

Aria still wanted to ask for some more information about it but stopped by Serina.

"There is nothing we can do about it, Aria. Remember our mission, I believe the country's administration will find a solution to the situation. We stay one night here and continue our journey tomorrow."

That night, Aria was strangely sleepless. Soviets, USSR, she feels more and more curious about the country never seen before. Some people from the country can be easily controlled and not realized by anyone until they return to the country, but some, like the 'Priest' today, are hard to control even in the Karak.

As someone who works for the country's intelligence department, they should not have emotion or thought, they just like the army, do as the country asks them to do, and believe what the country tells them.

Aria looks at Serina who is already asleep, and wants to ask her more about the USSR, even though she already told much in the interrogation, she just wants to know more, what the interrogation asked was just the Soviet's military, economic and technology, political stuff that might affect the upcoming war the most.

But for everyday life, culture, and history, they did not inquire. How did the USSR come to this, everything must have a process. Perhaps it is simply the instinct of an intel officer to know more, or perhaps just pure curiosity.

If the administration can grasp some of it, perhaps they can also learn from it and apply it to the Karak, making Karak great again, just like before the USSR arrived, instead of the current situation where they are bullied and feel powerless.

Aria keeps thinking of the question until the dawn has come.

Serina wakes up, they two pack their stuff get some food from the villagers and continue their journey.
