Chapter 2 : The late Groom
"It's only natural that I know the one I'm going to marry.."
"It's only natural that I know the one I'm going to marry.."
"It's only natural that I know the one I'm going to marry.."
It kept on repeating in my head before I opened my eyes. I woke up feeling disoriented, my head spinning from the whirlwind of emotions that had consumed me.
"Haysss! I still woke up!" I grumbled. "I said don't wake up!" I said to myself.
I was silent for a moment. Then thought about what will happen later. I sighed again and again. Thinking that maybe, just hoping that by doing this I could lose my pain.
This is the day I never thought would come, but here I am.
"What if I go to sleep again? or drink a poison?"
I am alone in this room.
I stand up and starting to look for something could hurt me and can possibly be reason why couldn't marry that stranger. Yet, I remembered Grace.
"Grace.."
She is my one and only biological family left.
"I need to marry that Stranger"
In the middle of myself conversation, someone knocked the door.
"Hello Ma'am Abigail, this is Nikka, your hair and make up team"
"Y-Yeah.. hold on"
I walk towards the door and open it. I saw a young woman with some beautiful Gay holding their make up stuff, smiling at me.
"Good morning Miss Abigail" the activity greeted me.
What's good in the morning? I said in my head.
"Good morning come in"
They walk towards my room and start at the set up.
"Miss Abigail? did you already take a shower?"
"Do I have to do that?" I said it, without any emotion. They were stunned and not knowing what's the next thing they can say. " I'll take a shower, thank you"
"S-Sure Ma'am"
I took a bath. Not knowing how much time I spent. I just wanted to do it slowly and consume all of the time I have before, getting married with a Stranger.
When I was done taking a shower, I stepped out in the bathroom and wore a silk robe when I heard the people inside my room talking.
"I heard this is an arrange wedding"
"oh, that is why!"
"she looks sad, right?"
"yeah, this is the first time I encounter a bride that wasn't happy for her wedding"
"This is every girls dream, I hope this is not a nightmare for her"
" let's just do our job and make her pretty"
"Yeah, even though she is sad"
I took a moment of silence, and wait if they were going to talk again, but they didn't so I finally stepped out and walk towards them.
When they saw me, they gave me a big bright smile, and started to do their job. Surrounded by a chaotic flurry of activity as the hair and makeup team, followed closely by the wedding coordinator. They brought with them the wedding dress, a gown fit for me.
As I stood in the church, my heart pounding in my chest, I couldn't help but feel a sense of detachment. This was not a love story I had envisioned for myself. It was an arranged marriage, a union between Elijah Wright, a man I had never met, and myself. We were complete strangers, thrust together by circumstances beyond our control.
I wore a simple dress and a modest headpiece, my mind focused solely on one thing - securing the funds necessary for Grace's medical treatment. She was my younger sister, afflicted with a debilitating illness, and my one driving force throughout this whole ordeal. As the minutes ticked by, I became increasingly anxious.
"I thought Zoey is the one who's getting married"
" Zoey was pregnant with Abigail's ex-boyfriend"
" oh my God!"
" yeah and I think that Elijah and very lazy man!"
" oh my gosh! Poor Abigail"
" why don't you just run away?"
" this is for her sister, Grace"
"Hey, you two! will you just shut up!" I heard Lara my bestfriend, doing her job as best friend of the year. "You're not helping Abigail! If you want, you could just go home!"
Because of those whispers circulating about the Groom's unemployment and idle existence. Doubts crept into my mind, overshadowing any remnants of hope that remained.
The weight of these thoughts intensified when my smug sister, Zoey, walked through the church doors, arm in arm with my ex-boyfriend, Liam.
My heart sank as I caught sight of them, memories of Liam's betrayal resurfacing. The hurt and anger still lingered, but in that moment, I knew that my focus had to shift.
This day was not about past grievances or lost love. It was about the future, about securing a better life for my sister.
"hey, are you okay?" Lara said. I look at her and I was about to cry. "Oh my gosh girl you're so pretty to cry"
" I have a lot of things in my head, and I don't know how to process it, I want to go home"
" I don't know how to save you, all I can do is stand with you, I'm so sorry for what happened, please know that I'm always here for you, okay?"
I gently nodded. And hold myself making sure that I will not going to cry.
" it's almost time to start, where is the Groom?" we heard Zoey speaking. Lara's eyes rolled.
"I am of the opinion that the groom is not responsible due to his tardiness!"
I saw our Mother walk towards her and tell her to stop.
"Why ? I am just telling the truth! Whoever that Elijah is, I think he is very irresponsible!"
"Zoey, you don't know what you're saying" Dad said.
"oh come on!" Zoey rolled her eyes.
"after your wedding I'm going to kill your step sister!!" Lara whispered her joke at me.
"I bet that man is ugly because he's too shy to show his face, that is why I didn't want to marry him because I don't know him, I heard he doesn't even have a job"
Zoey, unable to contain her disdain for the groom's family, began making rude comments, her words like daggers aimed at the heart of an already fragile situation. I couldn't stand idly by, allowing her thoughtless words to taint the sanctity of this ceremony.
"Zoey shut up!" With a quiet yet firm voice, I scolded Zoey for her disrespectful behavior within the confines of the sacred church walls.
Just as the tension reached its peak, the grand entrance of a man interrupted the chaos.
He strode into the church, a tall and undeniably handsome figure, commanding the attention of everyone present. It was as if time stood still, all eyes fixed upon him, captivated by his presence.
In that moment, I couldn't help but feel sudden hope. A mittle amount of hope, that I felt because of this Man's presence.
As he approached me, I was able to smell his perfume and it is familiar to me.
"Hi.." A smile playing on his lips, uncertainty mingled with curiosity within my heart.
Is tit going to be the day would mark the beginning of a journey that would forever alter the course of my life?
To be continued…
