Chapter 2 - Chapter 2 Normal Activity

"-Riots and civil unrest are escalating even further in France as refugees continue to increase and people protest against the tax increase, with several buildings being looted and police officers attempting to-"

"-All-time high all across the globe! And the Country of British have officially lost control as food price increased and the constant war has drained most-"

"-北京全市用电已创历史新低 北京市民-"

"-Refugge continues to flood the checkpoint in Brazil as the third country-"

"Hey, how much longer do you think we can survive?" I asked while munching on some of the food.

We are now at the Cafeteria with a loud voice echoing throughout the room as people eat while talking and loud noise from the TV itself.

Currently, we are eating the food that was provided, mostly spaghetti and some extra sausage to fill out Belly.

Honestly, the portions seemed to be shrinking every day, but free food was still free food, I guess we couldn't be too picky about it.

As I looked up at the stationary television, my mind wandered toward thoughts about our chances of survival.

With the world engulfed in chaos due to civil conflict, riots, food shortages, refugees, and so many more, I can't help but ask him about the chance of our survivability.

Glancing over at him, I posed the question to the best of my ability "Do you think we're going to make it out of this alive?"

As Mathew's fork hung in the air, his eyes widened with surprise at my abrupt question. He was not expecting it. "That's... a bit sudden"

"I just want to hear your perspective on it," I explained.

Just last month, we lost communication with the Hydroponic Farm, which had been our primary source of food. The United Nations Special Task Force has been dispatched to investigate, but even if they manage to reclaim the facility, the chances of the personnel responsible for the farm surviving seem slim.

And these days, finding a good person is rather hard considering extinction is happening.

It's not the first nor the last this is going to happen.

This is going to keep happening until we all die from WCS.

We managed to last this long because of the Hydroponic food that other sectors provide, but now that is gone...

"Hm...At best 2 months, worst is one. Food is going down rapidly after all." He munched down the food looking a bit grim "Heard the cooks have been complaining a lot from the lack of supply"

Maintaining Project Gestalt requires a lot of resources and manpower that's why grunts like us are forced to work in their place. In exchange, we will be given a chance to join Project Gestalt.

The catch is you have to work at least 5 years straight for free. Not including daily necessities which right now it is asking for the impossible as the situation just keeps deteriorating.

Mathew then looks a bit saddened as he looks at the food contemplating "I wonder how long we'll have to work here to get into one of Project Gestalt's My family has been pressuring me to hurry and get things the ticket."

After hearing it I can't help but sign. It's too depressing living in this environment, it's more like a black company where we have to work 24/7 just to survive another day. While we wait to get our turn.

I have known Mathew's family a little since sometimes and whenever there is a day off I visit his family to play, and his family is just like any other person. They wish to enter Project Gestalt knowing that every day the situation deteriorates.

They are currently living not too far from this base. And currently struggling to survive as humanitarian aid has slowed down in recent months from the recent legion attack.

I stretch my body upward and Look at him with a small smile, trying to get rid of the gloomy mood "Cheer up bud, I heard there is going to be candy provided." His eyes suddenly glint in expectation

"R-realy?" In response, I nod my head and his smile brightens "Oh man I haven't tasted sugar for a long them, it's luxurious these days."

"Hahaha, I know right? At least you can look forward to it." I then stand up "Now come on finish the food we have a job to do on Server 2"

After eating we are now heading to another place that is needed for repair.

As the white hallway and the dim light on the ceiling provide us. We found ourselves stopping when a crowd of various professions formed in front of us. Blocking our path to Server 2.

"What happened here?" Mathew Said

Curios got the better of me, so I stepped closer to take a look.

As we managed to get behind the crowd, I tiptoed to get a good look and saw warning Signs with a yellow color blocking our path with security added. And beyond was a bunch of UN Soldiers with blue helmets, a mask on their faces, and gray armor planting guarding the hallways.

Oh.. it's the UN Soldiers, what are they doing here?

And beyond the soldier, I saw people wearing white cloth that covered the entire body while surrounding what seemed to be Black dust on the ground.

My expression turned grim upon what I am seeing "Legion." I mutter

"...Another bite of the dust." Mathew sighs a little at what he sees as well.

No matter how many I see it, it is scary being infected by WCS. The moment you are infected by WCS you either turn into salt which is at least painless or turn berserk and try to infect another human.

Worst the process of turning into Legion is extremely painful as it forces your bone to evolve into a monster. The moment you are in the process of turning, god hopes there is someone near you to put things at the end of your life.

Honestly, there is nothing that can stop the spread of the disease other than burning any remains of it.

Maybe a little too far, but most people these days don't want to take the chance of WCS spreading rapidly. Especially at one of the most important facilities in the UN that has invested significant resources to save humanity it self.

"...Do you think there is going to be another batch of people with no contract?" I glance at my buddy to see his respond

"Bah... For all we know it's going to get replaced by androids, they are more efficient and Immune to WCS after all" Mathew grumbled a little

The one that killed the red girl was also an android, a construction worker was an android, and The one that ran Project Gestalt was also an android.

You won't find a place where there is not a single place run by androids

Since the staggering success of androids killing Red Eye, and knowing that androids can't get infected by WCS and can be powered by a nuclear Reactor that can last one hundred years. Most of the country has accelerated the production of androids since then it has been tried to replace most labor that has been lacking from the long period of constant war and pandemic loom over us

But that's predicted to be done around the year 2042 since it is extremely expensive to make them and it is cheaper to employ human workers that can do the same job for lower pay and cost.

By 2042 we also have to activate Project Gestalt, or we all will die from WCS.

As we spoke we each other I noticed someone behind me and looked behind to see gray clothing. Various medals around his chest, With added Visop Cat, that sighs he was a high officer.

"Stop lingering around and continue the work!" The high officer said loudly and all of the people began to disperse.

Having no choice we decided to go for another route for the hallway.

Everyone time people always said it is an honor working as part of Project Gestalt, where the greatest minds around the world gather. And the fact that humanity depends on this place for humanity's survival.

It's just a fucking lied so everyone here can work to their last bone. I don't know when but everyone has been brainwashed to think like that.

But well... the real truth of why everyone works here is because of security, food, safety, and the hope of joining Project Gestalt even if it's a pretty low chance. I doubt anybody in their sane mind wants to work here for free, even if they were paid by dollar which right now is useless these days.

Just reminded me again it dampers my mood.

"Damn.. Now we have to take the long way just to reach the server" Mathew said.

Just another day of being a mechanic.
