Chapter 1 - Miseries and Luck

If being out of luck had a face, it definitely had to be mine.

Dennis Wholey once rightly said, "Expecting the world to treat you fairly because you are a good person is a little like expecting the bull not to attack you just because you are a vegetarian."

Just a year ago, I held a top management position at a prestigious company. Now, I'm a NEET, barely surviving my first year in this lifestyle.

I don't know where I went wrong. I was always honest in my work, never committed any fraud. Then why was I framed for a crime I didn't commit?

I'm sick of this. Sick of being good. I will do anything to get what I want, no matter what I have to do.

I need one chance. Just one chance, and I promise I'll seize it.

Please save me, God!

I hurried out of the grocery market, clutching the eggs I bought. Nowadays, I feel sick going out. Maybe it's the embarrassment or just that I've grown too accustomed to staying indoors.

I really want to get a job soon. Another month like this, and I'll go insane. I can't wrap my head around how anyone can live this NEET lifestyle, staying home all day.

I'm terrible at house chores, and it's only thanks to my girlfriend, Kaori, that I've survived these past months.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! God save me! Please!

Taking a deep sigh, I brushed away the tears threatening to fall. As I waited for the light to turn green, I noticed a procession of black BMWs pass by, flanking a stunning vintage car that looked like it belonged in a grand palace.

Considering my neighborhood is quite expensive, even the flat I live in costs half of Kaori's income, which is our only source of money right now. But even here, I don't see such exquisite cars every day. Is this someone important? I thought.

Damn, that was a nice car. I wish I could take Kaori on a romantic ride in it. But I am reluctant that she would understand my love for such cars. She'd probably prefer a Lamborghini Urus or Sian, though.

As the cars disappeared and the light turned green, I crossed the road with the others. My flat was only three minutes from the grocery store, but even that felt too long. I ducked into the pastry shop and slipped into the alley beside it.

Maybe I have become accustomed to this life without realizing it.

The narrow, rarely used alley was a shortcut I often took in a hurry. Carefully, I made sure my shoulders didn't touch the dirty walls.

"Sorry sir, but you can't go home right now. I need you!"

Before I could react, I heard the sound of someone running in office shoes. Suddenly, an opaque plastic bag was wrapped tightly around my head. I struggled, clawing at the bag, but it was too strong. The more I fought, the tighter it became.

I was suffocating.

Is he trying to kill me?

It seems so.

Why am I being attacked out of nowhere?

My lungs started to ache.

I tried tearing, clenching, and squeezing the plastic, but it wouldn't give.

I tried to pry his hands off me, but nothing worked. Tears began to fall from my eyes.

I was scared. I didn't want to die, especially not like this.

Slowly, my consciousness faded, and I succumbed to darkness.

At least, that's what I thought at the time.

But I survived. Somehow.

Little did I know, that moment marked the beginning of a new chapter in my life.

That's why I say, you never know how funny life can turn out, sometimes.

And this is my story, The story of Adachi's Unwanted Harem.
