Chapter 52 - Rouge et Noir (4)

'Noir? Monsters of another world also speak French?' Ren thought to himself.

Once they all stepped into the door and walked down the stairs for a little bit, into the darkness, the door closed off in the most spectacular way, by collapsing into the ground.

"Let's keep moving, check if your devices still function properly." Solomon said, referring to the communication devices they brought along.

While Isaac, Damien and Ash made their way to the ruins they could make out in the distance after scouting from a tree, Ray and the others woke up underground after a brief nap since they all lost consciousness.

They all had a look of confusion on their faces waking up, but it wasn't difficult to figure out what had happened.

"They separated us by dragging us away. We might be underground right now." Ray said, bring Lucy and Ashley to their feet, while Linda recollected herself fully.

"Not probably, that's exactly what happened." Linda stated, "our main problem is not that…" she was interrupted midway as they all received a system notification at the same time.

Kill the Red Demons

. . .

"Rouge? What does that mean?" Ray said to himself.

"It means red, dungeon of red. Quite the straight forward objective, to kill demons. Well, the monsters we encountered before aren't red, so I doubt it's them." Lucy helped herself to her feet as she tried to maintain balance. She could still feel the fatigue being very present in her body, nothing changed, that was the same for all of them.

After chatting about the issue for a while, the four of them decided it was a good idea for them, so they worked to find a suitable spot, taking turns to keep watch. There was no way to know what time it was outside mainly because their time inside the dungeon was pretty chaotic, so they rested mostly because they felt tired, and not because it was night time per say.

"I'll keep the first watch, you guys can go to sleep, we'll switch every two hours." This system was good, but none of them was used to such schedule, but it was the ideal thing to do, they couldn't sleep for too little or too less anyway.

Above ground, in the dungeon that never had a change from day to night, Isaac, Ash and Damien made their way until they reached the ruin they had been sighting from the distance. Now that they had gotten there and were looking at it up close, it was very big, it felt like walking into a football stadium if nothing else, just one with various compartment and walls.

Damien took the first step inside, but he was pulled back out by Isaac who frowned and shook his head.

For one, Isaac was still very suspicious and on edge about everything within this dungeon, so he already thought to take some precaution. "We've already fallen into one illusion trap on our way here, what's to say there won't be another? Take this rope and tie on your waist…" Isaac passed a reasonable length of rope to all of them to attach to themselves so they always remained connected. He hoped that this would prevent any mysterious split up from happening along the way.

"Good idea Isaac." Damien said, to which Isaac didn't necessarily respond and just began walking since he was in front. Their quiet times didn't last long though, as monsters appeared out of seemingly nowhere and began attacking from all sides, giving them no time to prepare. Good thing they were already ready for such a situation, so it didn't come unexpected for them.

With the pressure from the monsters, they were forced to run into the ruins blindly in hopes of losing the monsters.

These monsters were similar to the ones from before, standing at a height several centimeters above 200cm with round crystal eyes and no other facial features. Unlike the ones from before that had a more swampy feel to them, these ones were made of just stone and sand, similar to an earth golem, but not quite fitting the aesthetic of a typical golem.

They kept running within the ruins, unaware of where exactly the routes they took led them to. After a while, Damien took a look behind them, noticing that no matter what happened, they weren't losing the monsters, and the monsters somehow always knew where they were.

"Hey! We aren't losing them!" Ash said in a panic, stating the obvious in a teasing tone, or so it sounded.

"Not just that, something is very fishy about this situation." Damien stated.

"You noticed it too, right? They seem to be driving us towards the direction they want."

"Doesn't that mean we can slow down?" Ash asked.

"I doubt we're needed particularly alive, Ash, either way, their goal is for us to die, most definitely."

While on that note, they came into a circular space that had only two paths at the other side leading down different routes. That was not the problem though, since even from these paths, there were similar monsters walking towards them slowly, as though they had been waiting for their arrival.

The three of them stopped in their tracks abruptly, and so did the monsters that were hot on their tail. Even those ones began walking slowly towards them from that path.

"We don't really have much of a choice. Regardless of how much stronger these guys are, we need to hold them off as much as possible, each person per hole!" Isaac said, to which the other two agreed.

Ash was left to face the monsters from the path they came from, while Isaac and Damien each took a path for themselves to hold down.

"We either survive this, or we all die, no holding back. If anybody has a useful trick, this might just be the time to use it."
