Maxwell went to settle scores with Daniel and even made it clear he was doing it to get back at the hurt he caused Jane.
And instead of Daniel to get terrified by the scary man who was about to torture him and make his life hell, he bowed his head obediently and was ready to receive whatever punishment that was going to be bestowed on him.
He didn't even ask Maxwell what his relationship with Jane was. It was like he knew her so well that he didn't need to suspect her relationship with this man.
According to him… He deserved far worse because he knew how pitiful it was when Jane gets hurt to the point of tears.
He understood this and that was why it killed him more that he hurt her than the fact that they broke up after being together for so long.
