Chapter 10 - Put a Mark on the life

"At first, mana was dark purple, it was too strong for humanity to wield it. Many died while trying to become a mage and knight as the mana rampaged inside their bodies. But in the course of time, mana weakened and took the color of blue and much more. With the weakening of mana, humanity finally managed to wield this miraculous energy."

"Currently, we classify the levels with the color of the person's mana. Beginners' mana is cyan with green streaks, Apprentices' is just cyan, Adepts' is light blue, Masters' is blue, Grands' is dark blue, and lastly Archs' mana is purple. Yes you heard it right. Arch ranks wields the mana that was once too strong for humanity. This is the path of strong. All of you can become an Arch in the…"

The professor continued to spout bullshit about how everyone could become an Arch rank. It was just plain idiocy.

Hence, for the duration of the class, I just stood in the corner while the professor was holding the class. I didn't want to cause a problem just because I didn't like the professor's thoughts.

It was the first days of the academy's season. Hence, the things the professor said were very basic, aimed at people with no background, in short, for commoners.

However, the only commoner of the class, the bleak-eyed girl, wasn't even listening to the professor, or at least she seemed like that.

When the professor who also thought like me, asked a surprise question to the bleak-eyed girl, she easily answered.

"What is the answer to this question?"

"Law of Mana and Magic's finite convertibility."

"...ahem! Let's continue..."

The professor couldn't do other than resuming his class.

It was a pretty amusing scene.

'Is this how it feels like to be a student? Well, no, probably not.'

Although I had suspicions that there was a devil in the class, my mood was strangely over the top.

I even confirmed that Isabella, whom I suspected to be a golem, puppet, a shapeshifter, or a vessel, didn't have thoughts on her own. So, she was essentially something that was controlled by someone else.

However, as I have mentioned, I was in a relatively good mood.

I could deal with one or two middle-class class devils with some effort, hence I wasn't worried that much. Just a little bit of frustration and rage. Nothing important.

Plus, tracking down a devil wasn't an easy job. Devils were innately tricky creatures that were hard to catch. They hide in the shadows, enter the people's dreams, and blend into society with their illusion or shapeshifting powers. Some of the higher-ranked devils can even imitate someone else's mana signature to mislead inspectors into innocent people.

I'm not even counting their innate chaotic nature. They will cause chaos while they are escaping from me. I would rather watch over Isabella while the thing behind her stays put like this. However, I should notify the minister and the principal.

So, why am I in a good mood?

I, myself, didn't know the exact reason. It didn't matter anyway. The important thing was that I was in good spirits.

Although, for some reason, I had an urge to read this bleak-eyed commoner's mind. Was this a sign from my intuition?

My intuition, sixth sense, spiritual sense, or whatever you want to call it, was always extraordinary.

I could somehow feel people and things that were going to put a mark on my life, and sometimes life-threatening dangers like how Mother descended behind me without showing her appearance to me. Mother wasn't hostile to me, there was no reason for her to be, but maybe her entire presence was enough to harm me greatly. Hence my intuition alarmed me to not look at her.

All of these were my speculations, but I deemed them to be infinitely close to the truth.

So, I needed to look into this girl's mind.

However, I was waiting for the class to end. If I were to learn something shocking, I had a high chance to show my true thoughts on my face. This was the same reason I wasn't reading Seraphina's mind.

Even though I was worried about her, showing weakness in front of many people would be the biggest mistake. So, I refrained from doing it right here, right now.

"Hmm?"

Footsteps. Heavy and quick footsteps with wide gaps woke me up from my thoughts.

Someone was running towards here. I came to a conclusion.

The professor also stopped and turned toward the entrance of the class, the students' attention also turned to the door, after following the gaze of the professor.

Bam!

The door swung open and slammed onto the wall.

"I am sorry I am late, teacher!"

A young man with light gray hair and crystal-like blue eyes appeared and apologized loudly. However, there was a big smile on his handsome face in contrast to his apologetic words.

A troublemaker?

"You are?"

"I'm Lars Lightbringer!" The troublemaker declared his name with a proud tone.

'What is he? A child? Is there even a last name such as Lightbringer?'

Even the thought of introducing myself as 'Caelum Lightbringer' made me cringe inwardly, but this guy was proudly saying it.

'What are you? A fucking fairytale hero?'

Fortunately, I had a pretty normal surname, Achard. It was the first time I was grateful for my surname.

Humans are strange creatures indeed.

I, who always hated the household I belonged to, didn't have any affection for the household name either, yet, this changed in an instant after witnessing this embarrassing surname.

'Yes, Achard is a pretty okay last name. At least it is better than Lightbringer.'

As if the professor had the same thought as me, his expression crumpled and the corners of his lips twitched.

With a quick turn, the professor returned to his seat took out a few papers, and looked through them.

"Lars Lightbringer... Lighbringer... Lightbringer... Lars...just Lars...?"

The professor looked through the papers and took out one of them. Then he slammed the paper on his desk with a loud noise and shapely turned to the gray-haired Lars.

"You, bast– lowly commoner! You don't even have a last name, let alone a flashy name such as Lightbringer! Get out of my class and reflect in front of the door!"

Most of the students laughed at Lars, who turned out to be the second commoner of this class, who also came so late that the class was about to end in some minutes.

I also felt that the situation was slightly amusing, but not enough to make me laugh.

However, there was someone who didn't find this strange guy funny. The bleak-eyed commoner girl.

The eyes of the commoner girl were still bleak, yet, her eyes were sharper than before while looking at the newly arrived commoner guy.

As if she was recording even the minuscule movements of his muscles.

'She knows this guy, and for some reason, I am getting the same urge from him. The urge to read his mind.'

I was deep in thought. For an unknown reason, I already met two people who will possibly put a mark on my life or will put my life in danger.

'Well, isn't this a bit too much? How can two young adults put a mark on my life?'

It seemed to me that, my vacation-like job was far from going to be peaceful.
