Chapter 147 - Chapter 147 - Try It My Way

Von carefully unwrapped the ring and placed it in his hand. He thought back to Oren's words about bringing out abilities by creating weaves. This time, he was naming, but he still felt something wasn't right about the ring. It felt incomplete as if Chet failed to provide appropriate weaves of essence when he imbued it.

Instead of just Von poured his essence into the ring, he recalled the words of Master Oren. "If you decide to bring out the agility in the dagger, you would focus on healing magic, then the properties. If you wanted to add the protections of the beast's hide, you would add a weave of apotropaic magic into the healing weave. If you want the sharpness of its claws, you would include transformation magic."

With this reminder in his mind, he added a weave of healing essence concentrating on agility and moving as quiet as a mouse, or rat as the case may be before using more healing essence to increase the healthiness of the wearing and their resistance to disease.

He continued to probe the ring feeling for the calling which induced rats to follow the ring owner. Perhaps, he thought, a little myalomancy might allow him to reduce further the effect, possibly making it so it could be worn into all but the most rat-infested areas. The metal within the band glowed a bright white with strands of lavender mixed in.

Much like the two weapons, Von could feel a part of himself being housed into the ring, but it wasn't much. This time, he had no worries whatsoever as the name "Mischief" was written inside the band then faded into the center of the ring as he willed it unable to be seen by eyes uncapable of seeing magic.

Satisfied with his efforts, he took a long breath and released it slowly thinking, Analyze.

Hearing the attributes of Mischief, Von smiled widely. Chet failed to put essence into the ring when he made it and relied only on whatever the core decided to show. With no direction from his aura, the ring was not truly enhanced. He felt if he were to make the same set of rings and imbued it with the various essences, they would have been much more powerful.

He placed the ring back onto the silk cloth before handing it to Chet. "You forgot a step when you imbued it. If you forged it and imbued it with the weaves of what you desired, it would have done what you wanted. I did the best I could to fix it, since it was already imbued without any directional essences.

Oren smiled at Von while wondering if he really did make something better. Rat rings were very common, especially among journeymen, and most of them had the undesirable flaw of attracting rats. With the strength Von was able to draw from the weapons, he would be surprised if the range of rat collection wasn't doubled or tripled.

Chet lifted the ring from the silk and sensed it. It was much stronger than when he handed it to the boy. Pushing his aura into it, he felt the changes. It lost the detrimental rat calling and now obtained something new. He didn't know what, but he wasn't going to attune to and possibly be covered in rats. Feeling the ring for the first time awakened as it was, he his eyes widened and he dropped the ring, fumbling it between his hands several times before it landed with a tink sound and rolled across the floor.

Oren using a small amount of choromancy and metallomancy retrieved it before it could roll too far away and examined it closely. After a moment, he tossed it back to Chet who nearly dropped it a second time before finally catching it in his hands.

"How, how, did you do that? I can't get it to do nearly that much."

"I told you. You have to use a weave of essence to control what you want to get out of it." Replied Von. "Have the others been imbued yet?"

Chet shook his head vigorously. "No, with the failure of these two, uh, I guess just one now, I didn't want to waste the time or essence."

Von eyed the man standing before him closely. "May I examine your aura? I want to see what affinities you have."

Chet turned pink as he said, "Um, sure. I was already tested though. My affinities lie toward metallomancy and hydromancy with only a small amount of pyromancy. That's the reason I decided to be a blacksmith."

Von pushed his own aura into Chet's and discovered he was close to right. He also had a tiny bit of transformation affinity, but only at the novice tier. Pondering this for a moment, he gathered the information he knew of transformation to the level Chet could handle it into a small area of his mind.

"Would you mind if I imparted some knowledge to you, Chet?"

"I doubt you know more than me about blacksmithing, but please do."

Von walked over and placed his hand on Chet's arm, opening this newly created are to the much taller man. Once Chet had seen what was going on in his mind, Von pushed a copy of the knowledge into the journeyman smith. For good measure, he added a novice treatise of healing magic and the knowledge of how he was taught to imbue an item.

As Von maintained the touch, the journeyman smith stood absorbing the knowledge he received and as though a light had appeared above his head, he took an unimbued ring from the box of boxes. Removing it from its silk, he pushed the thoughts and essences of transformation, healing, specifically agility, and stealth, while Von pushed his own weave of myalomancy to keep the rats from automatically being called through the older man.

Feeling the ring through the link, Von guided Chet's essences ensuring that the ring would be imbued with the desired attributes as they worked until finally, they both determined the ring was ready to be shown to the others. Chet grinned excitedly as he swiftly presented the ring to Vorolen for her judgment. Examine this one, Mistress Battlebourne, this one is worthy of your judgement.

Vorolen held the ring. Willing her aura into it to probe its capabilities, her mouth opened unconsciously as she drew in a sharp breath. This new ring not only had the agility, movement, stealth attributes, and disease resistance, it also allowed the attuned wearer to speak with rat-kind and with much effort, likely painful, transform into a rat. While none of the attributes were large, it had yet to be named. Thus, if Chet named it correctly, it could likely double in power.

The dwarven smith passed the ring to the other two smiths who nodded their approval. The expressions on the faces of the master smiths spoke volumes as Vorolen revealed the ring's remarkable attributes. If he could replicate this without Von's assistance, he would be well on his way to becoming a master smith. Oren returned the ring to Vorolen who passed it again to Chet.

Von grinned at Chet before sounding like a master smith. "You do have your limits, but those trinkets you can make will still be worth a lot."

Despite the age difference, Chet bowed to Von. "Thank you, grandmaster Zupan. You showed me something I couldn't grasp before." As he stood, he made contact with the boy's shoulder. Can you help me name the ring?

With a nod, Von rode in the back seat of Chet's mind guiding him on strengthening the essences he initially awoke within the beast core. Wondering what to name it, Von thought to him. Ask the ring. The core will understand your desire based on when it was alive and help you.

Doing just this, the name came to Chet's mind, Greyfurr. Von nodded in approval at the choice. The name felt right for this ring. He continued to support the previously placed essence weavings until the ring felt full, then he used metallomancy to carve the name within the inside of the ring in bright shining letters. Before he could back out, Von guided him in hiding the name within the metal making it hidden to those who might look for it.

Once complete, they backed their auras out of the ring. Chet, with an even more exuberant smile, presented the fully named ring to Vorolen.

As she accepted the finished ring, Von had one thought, he hoped this was a better way than they expected.
