Von and Chet watched as Vorolen held Greyfurr in her hand, pushing her aura into the silvery ring for nearly ten minutes looking at Chet and himself. Finally, after several additional glances at the two youngers, she silently passed the ring to Oren. The elf then took quite some time examining the ring with his aura before again passing the ring to Grimdon without saying a word.
Grimdon began the process as the other two had while Chet began perspiring profusely. Chet was extremely concern with what was happening now. In the past, everything he did before for Mistress Vorolen when he created an item, she commented on ways to improve or explained a different way which might have been an improvement, or she told him 'Well done.' This time, not a word was said by any of the master smiths.
Grimdon finished much quicker than the other two master smiths, but instead of commenting, he looked at Chet and Von before shaking his head. He then looked to Oren and Vorolen and moved his eyes toward the door. The three of them then moved out of the forge and into the shop area before closing the door.
Chet began chatting up a storm. "What did we do wrong, Von? They haven't said a word. Is the ring that bad? They could have at least said something. I mean, it was a new technique, right? They've never used two blacksmiths before to imbue or name anything. I guess we learned something today. Too bad it didn't work."
Von hesitated before speaking. "I really wasn't acting as a blacksmith so much as a mage. I just directed you and added the essences you were missing to allow them to awaken in the ring. I think any wizard of the right schools could have done the same thing, other than guiding you. I could have sworn I felt something go right."
Chet lifted his shoulders in a shrug. "I guess it didn't. The other three rings are just a waste after all."
"It seemed like the right way to do it. I don't know what went wrong."
"Maybe when you get a little more experience under your belt with blacksmithing, things will work better, Von. Smithing is a matter of just the right touch and a lot of experience."
Von shook his head wondering what they did wrong. He stared at the remaining three rings as though they could tell him. Finally, he said, "Chet, let's try again. Let's imbue it the same way then name one of these. I want to try to see what we did wrong. The worst that can happen is we waste another otherwise useless ring."
"I don't know why you want to try again. It won't change anything."
"Please?" Von asked giving the look of a child desperate for candy or a treat.
"I guess it can't hurt. Mistress Vorolen was going to melt them down into slag anyway."
The young boy grabbed one of the three remaining rings and handed it to Chet. He then placed his hand on his arm to guide him through the imbuing process adding the missing essences. He then examined the ring closely. Analyze.
Von smiled, "Okay, this is already an improvement. Now let's name it."
Following the imbuing with the naming process took only about a minute as the two drew upon their previous experience with Greyfurr. This ring chose the name Greyhunter. Unlike the last time, Chet felt more comfortable with Von aiding from within his mind and the ring was named quickly with almost no real draw of his essence.
The man shifted his aura into the ring and was amazed by what he felt. "This is awesome! It's the best I've made yet!" Chet's enthusiasm made his smile glow as Von stared at the new ring.
Analyze.
"Beautiful!" Shouted Von. "Again! Let's do another one!"
In his excitement, Chet had already grabbed another ring and placed Von's hand on his arm. The process went faster still. In less than two minutes, Greyfang was completed and its abilities were identical to Greyhunter's.
Legendary? Since it has a brother, it's no longer unique, but legendary. A legendary item from a common core? Von was even more excited. "Last one?"
Chet nodded eagerly and the entire process was only a minute and a half. Von's essence flowed smoothly into the final ring bestowing an Greyrunner with abilities like the two before it. Just to make certain, once again, Von thought: Analyze.
This was perfect! Three identical rings which would have been considered flawed to the point of needing destroyed. Both of them let out out a whoop of delight before hugging the other.
The noise of their excitement immediately stopped as the door to the shop opened and the three smiths entered the forge. Oren inquired. "Is everything alright?"
The two nodded as Von responded first. "Yes, better than alright, sir! May I...."
Vorolen cut his words off. "Good, because I, I mean we want the two of you to attempt to start them imbuing process on one of the unfinished rings to see what happens. We are all curious to see if this changes the outcome of what happened to Greyfurr."
The two looked a little pink in the face and looked at the floor before Von drew the nerve to ask, "What happened with Greyfurr? You didn't tell us what was going on, so we don't know yet."
Vorolen opened her hand, returning the ring to Chet first. "You tell me."
Not wanting to wait, as soon as Chet held it where he could see, Von thought, Analyze.
Chet concentrated on Greyfurr and once his aura was done with it, he, like Von, discovered it was quite powerful, but the Greyfurr wasn't quite as good as its siblings they completed without the smith's knowledge or permission.
Handing the ring to Von who only acted as though he were sending his aura into it since he already knew Greyfurr's gifts, he smiled before offering it back to Vorolen.
She gracefully accepted the legendary ring from the boy. "Now you can see why we want to see what you two can do with the other three rings. We are hoping, with a little luck, that you can create something close to what you made there once the others are imbued and named."
Chet gulped for a second before handing the jade box to the smiths. "We kind went behind your back and did it ourselves. Inside the box are Greyhunter, Greyfang, and Greyrunner. Their abilities are identical to one another."
"And slightly better than Greyfurr's," added Von.
