Chapter 13 - Resounding slap

"Fiancée?" She turned to face me, her expression filled with disbelief. "I'm sorry, sir. I had no idea," she said, slightly bowing her head.

Looking at Benjamin's demeanor, it was hard to tell if he was genuinely upset or just pretending. He seemed so serious. Suddenly, his gaze shifted towards me, catching me off guard. Should I say something?

"Uhmm…" I cleared my throat before speaking. "No worries, honey. She had no idea we were engaged," I managed to say, surprised by my own words. I could see the surprise in Benjamin's eyes, and for some reason, it felt satisfying to catch him off guard for once.

"Hmm... well, now that Stephanie is here, she'll take you to the research and development department. You'll be the director in charge," Benjamin explained.

"What?" I exclaimed, taken by surprise with the sudden responsibility. "I don't have any experience in that field," I honestly admitted.

"Don't worry, all you have to do is sign the document before it reaches me. The research is handled by others. Just sign, no need to stress yourself. Okay?" Benjamin reassured me, his voice calm as he patiently explained his reasons.

I found him sweet, even though we weren't a real couple. Benjamin still cared about me. He gave Stephanie some instructions, but I was too excited about my new job to pay any attention. Suddenly, I heard Stephanie say, "Let's go, ma'am," and it snapped me back to reality. I stood up and followed her, but then I realized I forgot something. I turned around and there was Benjamin, giving me a look like I'd overlooked something crucial. Oh no, I really should remember about my husband now.

With a smile, I quickly said, "I'll see you later, honey," before dashing out without waiting for his reply. I just couldn't resist that stunning face of his.

Benjamin's office was a world away from the Research and Development department. It felt like stepping into a whole new company. The place was brimming with advanced technology more than it was with people. I was guided to an office and the sheer joy that flooded my heart was indescribable. As I settled into the plush office chair, I couldn't help but think that it must have cost a pretty penny.

"I'll have your assistant sent for immediately," Stephanie said as she walked out. It was surprising to see her sudden humility. Funny how life works. So now I would have an assistant too. I suppose this job won't be too shabby after all.

As I spun around in my chair, the office door swung open, and I glanced up to see a woman in her mid-twenties. She was definitely attractive, though not quite on the same level as me. I couldn't help but notice the disapproving look on her face. But hey, I didn't want to jump to conclusions just yet. So, I figured I'd strike up a conversation with her and see how it goes.

"Are you my assistant?" I asked her, trying to sound friendly.

"Yeah... what do you want?" she replied, sounding quite rude.

"Well, I was thinking we should get to know each other before diving into work. What's your name?" I asked, hoping for a more pleasant response.

She scoffed and retorted, "You can't just boss me around here, claiming to be the boss's fiancée. And honestly, you don't look good enough for him anyway." She gave me a judgmental look, not caring about my feelings.

I was already fuming with anger at her and the words she spewed. I instinctively reached for my bag to call Benjamin, but then it hit me—I didn't even have his number. Just as I was processing this, she had the audacity to say, "You claim to be his wife, yet you use a phone like that? What century are you living in?" She burst into laughter, mocking me right to my face.

My heart sank as I grabbed my bag to go out. I couldn't afford a new phone since they're so expensive, so I've been using the same one I had since college. It may be old, but at least it still works fine. As I tried to walk past her without reacting, she made a face and even stuck out her tongue in a mocking gesture. The last thread of restraint snapped within me was no longer there and my hand flew instinctively towards her cheek, delivering a resounding slap. I just couldn't stand being taken for granted.

I brushed past her, my footsteps resolute as I retraced my earlier path. Her piercing screams and angry shouts echoed in the distance but I paid them no mind. A crowd of curious co-workers began to gather, their eyes fixed on the unfolding drama but I pressed on without hesitation. My sole focus was reaching Benjamin, no matter what stood in my way.

It took me a little while to find my way back since I'm still new around here, but I eventually managed to locate Benjamin's office. As I stepped inside, I was greeted by an empty office. Where did he go?. Suddenly, it hit me that he had a meeting scheduled for nine, but I had no clue where it was happening. I quickly scanned the table and spotted his day's schedule. I carefully read through it and discovered that he was in the meeting room right here in this building. Filled with anger, I stormed out of the office determined to find that room and confront Benjamin.

Luck seemed to be on my side as I stumbled upon a room enclosed in transparent glass. Inside, I caught a glimpse of Benjamin seated and appearing disinterested while a man delivered his speech. Despite Benjamin's lack of engagement, the presenter persisted with unwavering determination. Standing outside the glass, I found myself gazing at Benjamin until he was done with the meeting.

It was like he caught sight of someone watching him and in that instant our eyes connected as tears streamed down my face. I hadn't expected to cry so suddenly. I watched him hurriedly exit the meeting and approach me even though I had intended to wait until the meeting was over. He took hold of my hand and pulled me close, pressing me against his chest which only made my sobs intensify. The mix of emotions in that moment was overwhelming and his protective gesture spoke volumes.

"Who made my wife cry?" He exclaimed with a voice filled with a hint of anger. The intensity of his emotions was palpable.
