Chapter 2 - Worst day of my life

Ch 2

Today was the worst day of my life

The weight of the day's events hung heavy on my shoulders as Yudak and I left Darius's house and ventured into the streets of Delpolis. The town was alive with excitement, adorned in vibrant decorations to honor the Pythian Games, dedicated to the sun god Apollo, the beloved patron deity of Delpolis.

As we wandered through the bustling streets, marveling at the festive ambiance, I couldn't help but feel a glimmer of hope amidst the chaos of the day. The Pythian Games, held every four years at the sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi, brought a sense of unity and joy to the community, showcasing athletic competitions, musical performances, and artistic contests that celebrated the rich heritage of ancient Greece.

Amidst the colorful stalls and shops that lined the streets, one in particular caught my eye. "Wow, there are a lot of stalls and shops, Yudak," I remarked with enthusiasm.

Yudak nodded in agreement, his eyes scanning the bustling marketplace. "Yeah, even I'm shocked. It seems they left nothing behind while decorating the town this year."

My curiosity piqued, I hurried towards a stall selling action figures of legendary heroes, eager to immerse myself in the tales of ancient Greece. The shop owner welcomed us warmly, inviting us to explore his collection.

"Here, dear customers, you can find action figures of the great heroes throughout Greek mythology," he explained, gesturing towards the intricately crafted figurines. "Behold Herakles, battling the fearsome Nemean Lion with his bare hands. Witness the epic clash between Achilles and Hector, and the valiant struggle of Perseus against the dreaded Medusa. And here, marvel at the Trojan Horse, a symbol of deception and victory in the legendary Trojan War."

As I gazed upon the finely detailed figures, a sense of wonder washed over me, transporting me into a world of myth and legend where heroes and gods walked among mortals, their stories etched into the fabric of history.

"Excuse me," I said to the shop owner, "do you happen to have any figurines of the Greek gods?"

The shop owner's demeanor brightened at my question, and he nodded enthusiastically. "Ah, indeed I do! Step right this way, my friend."

He led us to a corner of the shop where a display of exquisite figurines awaited. Each one depicted a different deity from Greek mythology, crafted with remarkable attention to detail.

"Here we have Zeus, king of the gods, brandishing his mighty thunderbolt,"

the shop owner explained, holding up a figurine of the powerful deity. "And here is Athena, goddess of wisdom and warfare, with her spear and shield."

He continued to showcase the figurines, introducing us to a pantheon of gods and goddesses, from Poseidon, ruler of the seas, to Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty.

As I examined the figurines with awe, my gaze fell upon one in particular. "Do you have any figures of Hades?" I asked, curious to see if the shop owner had included the god of the underworld among his collection.

The shop owner's expression flickered, his enthusiasm dimming slightly. "Hades, you say?" he replied, his tone tinged with a hint of hesitation. "I'm afraid I do not have any figurines of the underworld god in stock at the moment."

I nodded understandingly, sensing that Hades held a different significance compared to the other gods. Nonetheless, I thanked the shop owner for his assistance and continued to admire the divine figurines before me, each one a testament to the rich mythology of ancient Greece.

As we walked away from the shop, the question about Hades lingered in the air, casting a shadow over our conversation. I turned to Yudak, curious to hear his thoughts on the matter.

"Yudak, why do you think Hades isn't talked about among people?" I asked, my voice tinged with curiosity.

Yudak glanced at me, his expression thoughtful. "I think it's because Hades is often associated with the darker aspects of life, like death and the underworld," he mused. "People might find those topics uncomfortable to discuss, so they prefer to focus on the more positive aspects of the Greek gods."

He paused, considering his words before continuing. "But Hades is still an important figure in Greek mythology. Without him, there would be no balance between life and death, light and darkness."

I nodded, absorbing Yudak's insights. It was true that Hades occupied a unique and often misunderstood role among the pantheon of Greek gods, and hisabsence from everyday conversation was perhaps a reflection of society's discomfort with the mysteries of death and the afterlife.

"Thanks, Yudak," I said, grateful for his perspective. "It's something to think about, for sure."

With that, we continued our journey through Delpolis.

Yudak, it's getting late," I said, glancing at the darkening sky. "We should head back to our hideout."

"Yudak nodded in agreement, his expression serious. "Yeah, you're right. It's not safe to be out here after dark, especially with Maximus on the loose."

With a shared sense of urgency, we quickened our pace, navigating the winding streets of Delpolis as we made our way back to our makeshift hideout. The town took on a different atmosphere as night fell, the once lively marketplace now shrouded in shadows and silence.

As we reached the safety of our hideout, I couldn't shake the feeling of unease that lingered from our encounter with Maximus and the mysteries surrounding Delpolis. Little did I know, our journey was far from over.

As we reached our small hideout, a voice suddenly pierced the silence. "Look who's back," it sneered, sending a chill down my spine. Turning towards the sound, my heart sank as I saw Maximus looming in the shadows.

Maximus stood before us, his imposing figure casting a menacing shadow in the dim light. His eyes glinted with malice as he advanced towards us, a predatory smirk playing on his lips.

"Well, well, well," he taunted, his voice dripping with contempt. "If it isn't the little rats who dared to defy me."

Yudak tensed beside me, his fists clenched in anticipation. "What do youwant, Maximus?" he demanded, his voice steady despite the underlying tension.

Maximus chuckled darkly, his gaze narrowing on us. "What do I want?" he repeated, a cruel gleam in his eyes. "I want payback for what you did to me earlier. And trust me, you're going to regret crossing me."

Fear gnawed at my insides as I faced Maximus, realizing that we were no match for his strength and brutality. But deep down, a flicker of defiance burned within me, refusing to back down in the face of adversity.

With a steely resolve, I stood my ground beside Yudak, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead. Little did we know, our confrontation with Maximus was only the beginning of a much larger battle that would test our courage and resilience to the very core.

My heart sank as Maximus's words registered, and my eyes widened in alarm as five more figures emerged from the shadows behind him. It was clear that we were outnumbered and outmatched, facing not just Maximus, but a group of his allies as well.

Yudak tensed beside me, his jaw clenched in determination. "This isn't good," he muttered under his breath, his eyes scanning our adversaries warily.

Maximus smirked triumphantly, relishing in our predicament. "Hope you don't mind if I bring some friends along," he taunted, his voice dripping with malice.

I swallowed hard, steeling myself for the confrontation ahead. We may have been outnumbered, but we weren't going to go down without a fight.

"Let's do this," I said to Yudak, my voice firm with resolve. With a nod of agreement, we braced ourselves for the inevitable clash, if we didn't fought now we would never be able to fight anyway."
