Chapter 58 - Siege of Emberwood city

As the sun rises, Ren and his soldier prepare to raid the next village before laying siege to the city.

Ren turned to his second-in-command, a hardened warrior with a scarred face named Kael. "We move at first light. I want the next village in our grasp before the city feels our presence."

Kael nodded, his loyalty evident in the steely gaze he directed at Ren. "As you command, Milord. The next village won't know what hit them."

The raiders mounted their horses and began the march toward the next settlement.

"Hyaa!"

After riding their horse for a while, they see a village, but the village itself were strange, turn out the village is empty.

Ren signaled for his troops to halt, and a tense silence enveloped the group, Kael spoke in a hushed tone. "That's not right, my lord, it seems the people of Emberwood have already noticed our movement."

"Look."

"Wheel trail, it seems the villagers have already evacuated."

Ren frowned, his eyes scanning the empty village. He had hoped to find some supplies and hostages to use as leverage against the city. "Damn, they must have been warned by someone. Kael, take a squad and search the houses. Maybe they left something behind."

Kael nodded and picked a few men to follow him. He dismounted his horse and entered the nearest hut, hoping to find some food or valuables.

Kael and his squad, scouring the abandoned village for any remnants of supplies, managed to unearth a meager collection of gold and wheat grain. The deserted huts yielded little, as if the villagers had taken most of their belongings with them in their hasty departure.

Kael returned to Ren, presenting the findings. "Milord, it's not much. The villagers seem to have left in a hurry, taking most of their valuables with them. We found only a handful of gold and some wheat grain."

Ren clenched his jaw in frustration. The villagers' swift evacuation and the meager spoils left him with a sense of thwarted ambition. "It seems we've underestimated Emberwood county."

"Kale, we will wait for Gareth and others, burn this village, it had no use for us."

Kael nodded in acknowledgment of Ren's order. "Understood, Milord. We'll make sure this village burns to the ground."

Emberwood City.

The atmosphere in Emberwood City remained tense as Countess Maresha and Grand Master Albert continued preparations for the impending siege.

The news of Ren's raid on the villages had reached them, and they understood that the city would be the next target.

The evacuation of the outlying villages had been underway, guided by the guards under Countess Maresha's command.

Civilians sought refuge within Emberwood City's walls, knowing that safety within its fortified defenses was their best chance against the impending threat.

Grand Master Albert, along with his trusted holy knights and warriors, organized the city's defenses.

They manned the walls, stationed archers at strategic points, and prepared for the inevitable clash with the forces of Oscana Barony.

Countess Maresha, her expression resolute, addressed the citizens gathered within the city. "Fear not, my people. We stand united against this ruthless aggression. Emberwood City has weathered storms before, and together, we shall prevail!"

The crowd erupted in cheers, clapping and shouting words of support and gratitude to their leader.

Among them was a young woman named Lila, who had fled from her village with her elderly father and younger brother.

She held her brother's hand tightly, feeling a mix of fear and hope in her heart.

She looked up at the walls, where she could see the archers and warriors ready to defend the city.

She wondered if they could hold off the invaders, who had already burned and pillaged several villages in their path.

She turned to her father, who had a weary but determined look on his face. He had been a farmer all his life, and he had lost everything he had worked for in the raid.

He had managed to save his children, but he had no idea what the future would bring.

He smiled at Lila, trying to reassure her. "Don't worry, my dear. We're safe here. The countess and the grand master will protect us. They're brave and wise, and they have the gods on their side." Lila nodded, hoping he was right.

She prayed that the gods would favor Emberwood, and that the city would withstand the siege.

She prayed that her family and friends would survive the ordeal, and that peace would return to the land.

She prayed that she would see the sun rise again, and that the flames of war would be extinguished.

In the next day, Gareth and the reinforcements arrived, meeting with Ren and the raiders who had scouted the empty village.

Gareth approached Ren, a stern expression on his face. "Ren, what happened here? Why is this village empty?"

Ren explained the situation, detailing how the villagers had seemingly evacuated in haste upon sensing their approach. "It seems Emberwood is more prepared than we thought. The villagers must have been warned."

"What would we do now? Should we lay siege to the city?" Gareth asks Ren about his next move.

"let's go to the city, my hand itches to get some exp." Ren decides to attack Emberwood City.

Ren shouted to his soldiers, "Come on, Soldier! Let's show them what we're made of! We'll take Emberwood by storm and make them pay for attacking our city!"

As they approached Emberwood city, they saw a huge banner flying over the city. It bore the emblem of Emberwood County.

"Get ready to aim." Ren yells to his solder.

"Fire!"

The siege of Emberwood City began at dawn, when Ren and his soldiers launched a barrage of arrows at the city walls.

The arrow was repelled by the formation made by Father Matthias. "Tsk!"

Ren observed the repelled arrows and ordered his soldiers to prepare for a frontal assault.

Siege towers were pushed forward, and battering rams were brought closer to the city gates.
