Chapter 63 - Ready to deploy

Capital city of Verdant Glades Kingdom.

In the capital city of the Verdant Glades Kingdom, the atmosphere was charged with anticipation and concern.

King Richard II had issued the order to gather half of his vassal's private army to reinforce the kingdom's defenses.

As the military advisors reported back, the magnitude of the response exceeded expectations.

In the war room, the king gathered with his military commanders, including General Augustus, to assess the situation.

"Your Majesty," General Augustus reported, "the response has been remarkable. We've gathered more than 100,000 soldiers from the vassal armies, ready and willing to deploy in defense of the kingdom."

King Richard II nodded, acknowledging the strength of his vassal forces. "How about supply? are we able to sustain such a large force?"

General Augustus replied, "Your Majesty, our supply lines are being reinforced, and arrangements are being made to ensure that the gathered forces are well-provisioned."

"However, maintaining such a large army for an extended period will strain our resources. We may need to consider supply routes and logistics carefully."

"So, if we move this solder, when did they arrive at Ember Ridge Barony?" Ask King Richard II.

General Augustus responded, "Your Majesty, if we mobilize the soldiers promptly, we can expect them to arrive at Ember Ridge Barony within a week. The roads are clear, and our forces are prepared for a swift deployment."

King Richard II considered the timeline. "Very well, General. Mobilize the troops and ensure they have the necessary provisions. We cannot afford any delays in reconquer Ember Ridge Barony."

General Augustus saluted. "Understood, Your Majesty. I will oversee the mobilization and deployment to ensure a swift and effective arrival at Ember Ridge Barony. The soldiers will be adequately supplied for the mission."

Duchy of Athea.

Duke Graham of Athea found himself in a difficult position. The king's order to send half of his private army to fight against the Pinnacle Republic was met with dissatisfaction and concern.

Complicating matters further, his cousin, Mayor Eldric, was involved in the political turmoil within the Verdant Glades Kingdom.

In his private chambers, Duke Graham summoned his trusted advisors and close confidants to discuss the delicate situation.

"That bastard, the king wants me to kill my own cousin but it's the Pinnacle Republic the one did it first." Duke Graham he was furious that the king force him to fight against his own family.

"Your Grace," Strategist Marcus began, "the situation is dire. We cannot outright refuse the king's command, but we must find a way to protect both Athea's interests and your cousin."

Duke Graham clenched his fist, frustration evident in his eyes. "I won't be the instrument of my cousin's demise. Yet, defiance against the king is a dangerous path."

"We need to gather the noble faction and form a united front," Adviser Isabella suggested. "If we can present a collective dissent against the king's orders, it might force him to reconsider."

"No, it's already too late, the only option we had was to defect to Pinnacle Republic." Duke Graham shakes his head at Advisor Isabella's opinion.

"But Your Grace, if we join the Pinnacle Republic, we will lose all our rights as nobles, not only that, our land too." Isabella advised against the idea.

Strategist Marcus added, "Defection could lead to severe consequences, and the Pinnacle Republic may not fully trust our allegiance. We must tread carefully."

"I can negotiate with my cousin and try to persuade other lords within the realm to join the Pinnacle Republic together." Duke Graham trying to convince them.

Adviser Isabella hesitated before responding, "Your Grace, negotiating with your cousin might be the wisest course of action. If we can find common ground and ensure the protection of Athea's interests, it would be preferable to outright defection."

Strategist Marcus added, "If we are to join the Republic, we need few demands to add to the negotiations."

"First is our land, second is our religion, and third is our culture."

"Even if we lost our right as a noble, at least we still had our land to rule."

"As we all know, our main religion is the Church of Light, while the Republic forbids any religion, we must preserve our faith."

Adviser Isabella nodded in agreement, "Preserving our religious practices is crucial. It's not just a matter of faith, it's intertwined with our cultural identity. We cannot afford to lose that."

Strategist Marcus added, "Incorporating these demands into the negotiations will ensure that even if we align with the Pinnacle Republic, the essence of Athea remains intact."

Duke Graham considered their words, "Very well. Prepare a message to Eldric. We must make it clear that our concerns are not driven by a desire for rebellion but a need to safeguard our way of life."

Commander Alex, noticing the change, inquired, "What does it say, Mayor?"

Mayor Eldric sighed and shared the contents with Commander Alex, "It's a message from my cousin, Duke Graham. He expresses his dissatisfaction with the king's order and the involvement of Athea in this conflict. They are considering negotiating with the Pinnacle Republic to protect their interests."

Commander Alex raised an eyebrow, "Negotiating with the Pinnacle Republic? That could change the dynamics of this entire situation. What is our response?"

Mayor Eldric leaned back, deep in thought, "We must respond cautiously. Send a messenger back to Duke Graham. Express our willingness to discuss potential alliances."

"I need my cousin to gather other nobles to join the Republic so we can end this war as soon as possible." Mayor Eldric added.
