Chapter 20 - Sound of Dead Souls & New Skill

"Looks like my guess was correct, the passive effect of the 'Sound of All' skill is the reason why I am hearing the sound of dead souls and spirits after I kill the undead, which is as per the skill description," thought Luke while looking at the passive skill section of the status.

Sound of All (Level: 2) (Proficiency: Novice)

Grade: Unique

Allows you to hear things people normally do not hear.

Luke sighed as he examined the description of the talent's passive effect and murmured, "There isn't even a slight change in the description of skill even after it is leveled up."

Luke explained, "Well it is a passive skill after all, a major change should happen when the proficiency goes up from Novice to Beginner"

The skill proficiency in the World of Avernus goes up like this

Novice --> Beginner --> Competent --> Proficient --> Expert --> Master

"There is no change in Inspect as well but the effect will show when I will use the skill on any target next time, while there is a very slight change in Mana Wave skill," said Luke while observing the active section of the skill.

Mana Wave (Level: 2) (Proficiency: Novice)

Grade: Common

On hitting a note with your weapon using mana will release a wave of mana which upon hitting a target will deal damage about INT X 2.1{2 --> 2.1} and a slight knockback to your target.

Cost: 8 MP

Cooldown: 6 seconds.

"What a great change," said Luke sarcastically while seeing the change.

Changing his emphasis from 'Mana Wave' to the active effect 'Sound of All,' Luke reasoned, "I wasn't using the active skill 'Sound of All' because of its high MP cost per sec, which was 5, because, at level 1, I can only use this skill for 10 seconds. This was insufficient to determine the true uses of this skill because I was unaware of its existence in my previous timeline, but now that I am level 3, I'll try to use it after putting everything into Intelligence because it is a Unique Grade Skill from a Legendary Grade Title, so the use and value of skill should be Legendary Grade or higher."

"Allocate 5 points to Intelligence," said Luke

Soon his MP Bar showed an increased value from 4/70 to 54/120

After the first evolution of the world, in contrast to the dragons, humans lacked any passive mana recovery ability derived from their heritage. So the Humans either have to gain any kind of Mana Breathing Technique or rely on potions to recover their Mana. So, this is the reason why Luke did not recover a single MP even after 5 minutes of slaying the last undead.

Hoping in his mind that the skill could be something that will be helpful to him in the future Luke called "Sound of All".

As soon as he used his skill, at first his hearing blacked out like he was deaf but soon he started hearing faint voices all around him when he tried to concentrate on all of them suddenly the sound of the voices increased

"THANK YOU FOR FREEING ME"

"SAVE ME I AM IN PAIN"

"HELP ME HELP ME" and much more

Because of the sheer intensity of agony created by the sudden burst of a large number of voices and their speaking level that was equivalent to that of a yell, Luke clenched his head with his hands. With each voice he heard, he felt like he was being stabbed in the skull with several long needles.

Luke started to yell loudly "STOP! Stop the use of the skill right now"

As soon as he gave the instruction, his skill ceased functioning and his hearing returned to normal.

"Huff… Huff…" breathed Luke heavily while falling on the grass

"What was that, did I do something wrong but everything was according to the description?, the skill should be used in this way," Luke, perplexed, checked his Status Bar for an answer.

Sound of All (Level: 1) (Proficiency: Novice)

Grade: Unique

Using mana and focusing on your hearing, you can hear things beyond the mortal realm.

Cost:5MP per second

Cooldown: None

His HP had dropped to 20 from 50, and his MP was 14/120.

He was taken aback by his current condition as, contrary to his estimation of 10 seconds, he had only used the talent for around 8 seconds. Additionally, he had lost roughly 30 HP due to mental damage he had sustained while using the skill.

"It appears that concentrating on everything caused such an effect and was incorrect on my part; next time I will try to use this skill near a non-corrupted area or concentrate on a single living being because focusing on the dead souls or spirits is still too much for me," said Luke after thinking for some time with a calm head after the effects from the skill was gone.

Luke sat up on the grass and grabbed the Lyre from his Inventory. With enough MP to cast one 'Sound Healing,' he played his Lyre, and the sound from the Lyre began to mix with his mana. A distinctive green-tinted thin delicate wave began to spin around his body, caressing and healing him in the process.

Luke felt like he was floating in the air during the first 5 seconds of the skill's duration before it terminated and went on cooldown, while his HP bar raised to 45/50.

Luke put the Lyre back in the inventory, feeling better than before. He crossed his legs in a sitting position, maintaining a straight back, closed his eyes, and began to focus on the environment. After about 4 to 5 minutes of concentration, he began to notice blue particles within the dark environment (due to closed eyelids), which were the mana particles. Slowly and gradually, he began spinning his mana core, creating a small suction force that attracted the mana particles surrounding him into his body straight inside the mana core. Luke maintained a consistent rotation speed since raising his rotation speed faster than he was already rotating may strain his mana core and cause cracks to emerge. Soon, his mana core began to fill with mana.

10 Minutes later….

Luke opened his eyes upon hearing a sound inside his head.

A notification popped in front of him as soon as he opened his eyes

Congratulations on getting the 'Meditation' skill.

Meditation (Level: 1) (Proficiency: Novice)

Grade: Common

Concentrating on the atmosphere allows you to sense mana particles and attract them within the core, replenishing your Magic Points and Stamina Points by 2MP and 5SP every 5 seconds.

Cost: None

Cooldown: None

Luke could have gotten up earlier, but he needed the sound of notification in his head for confirmation that he had acquired the skill.

"In contrast to mana breathing, which has both active and passive effects, mediation is an active skill. Meditation is a simplified version of Mana Breathing taught by mages for free to freshly created mages, as well as other classes and the general public for a small fee. "Because the Mana Breathing skill has many different types of effects depending on what type of breathing you have learned, the upper class like Counts, Dukes, Royal family, and Advanced Mages try to restrict the use of the skill only among themselves, not letting it out to the general public, even players have to work hard to get their recognition to get such skill because Mana Breathing is not dropped by monsters as loot," Luke reasoned.

Luke did not want to try the mana breathing he had done in his previous life since it required a high level of control over mana. In the first scenario of meditation, raw mana present in the atmosphere is immediately channeled into the core, but with mana breathing, the mana goes into your body through multiple mana channels that lead to the core, which is both faster and more effective. While attempting mana breathing for the first time, he was aided by an advanced magician because even a tiny deviation of mana into the wrong channel might result in severe internal damage. Which can only be cured by the Priest Class's highest healing skills and spells performed by a level higher than a Bishop, such as Arc Bishop, or an Elixir created by the Elves.
