Chapter 22 - Uncovering the Source

As the meeting progressed, the families scrutinized the energy upsurge mystery, meticulously examining maps and data, sharing their collective expertise, and discussing potential solutions.

Despite their exhaustive efforts, a nagging sense of omission lingered. The energy upsurge intensified by the hour, yet they remained frustratingly far from uncovering its elusive source.

Just as the meeting was about to adjourn, a distraught young woman from the Hale family's research team burst in, her frantic expression commanding immediate attention.

"Ariana, I'm so sorry to interrupt," she said, panting. "We've just received an urgent report from one of our scouts in the south-east region, detecting a strange, pulsating energy signature emanating from a remote village on the region's outskirts."

Ariana's eyes narrowed. "What kind of energy signature is it?."

The young woman hesitated. "It's... it's unlike anything we've seen before. It appears to be draining the life force of anyone within a one-mile radius, manipulating their magic in some way."

The room fell silent as the families digested this new information. Marcellus Ravenhurst's eyes gleamed with interest, while Eadbert Weldher's face darkened with concern.

Ariana stood up, her voice firm. "We need to investigate this immediately," she said. "I want two teams assembled: one to gather more information in the village and another to evacuate everyone in the settlement and its surrounding to a safer location."

The families nodded in agreement, and the meeting quickly devolved into a flurry of activity as they began making plans for the investigation.

But as they worked, the tension between the Ravenhursts and the other families, except for the Weldhers, who remained uninterested, continued to simmer just below the surface. It was clear that this was more than just a simple investigation - it was a matter of power, prestige, and magical supremacy.

As the families began to make their way out of the meeting room, Marcellus Ravenhurst caught up to Ariana Hale. "Ariana, may I have a word with you?" he asked, his voice low and smooth.

Ariana turned to him, her eyes narrowing slightly. "What is it, Marcellus?."

Marcellus smiled, his eyes glinting with amusement. "I was thinking that, given the... unusual nature of this energy signature, it might be wise to send a team of our most skilled and experienced mages to investigate."

Ariana raised an eyebrow. "And I suppose you're volunteering the Ravenhurst family to lead this team?."

Marcellus nodded, his smile growing wider. "Why, yes. I think we would be the perfect choice for this task. After all, we have a certain... expertise in dealing with unusual magical phenomena."

Ariana's eyes flashed with skepticism, but she said nothing. Instead, she turned to Eadbert Weldher, who was watching the exchange with a nonchalant expression on his face.

"Eadbert, what's your take? Should we deploy a team of our most skilled mages to investigate this energy signature?."

Eadbert's expression turned grave, and he stepped forward. "I agree, but we mustn't rush in blindly. Sending a team of mages into the unknown without meticulous planning and preparation would be reckless."

Marcellus snorted, his eyes rolling in exasperation. "Oh, come on now. Must you still cling to those outdated notions of caution, Eadbert? Sometimes instinct and skill are all the planning you need."

Ariana's eyes narrowed, and she stepped forward, her voice firm and authoritative. "That's enough, Marcellus. This isn't a competition; it's a calculated risk. I agree with Eadbert: we need to gather more intelligence and devise a solid strategy before proceeding."

Marcellus's face fell, his expression twisting in resentment. "This woman," he thought to himself, "always thwarting me. If not for her formidable power, I would have eliminated her long ago." A shiver ran down his spine at the mere thought of her abilities.

But Marcellus swiftly regained his composure, a calculating glint returning to his eye. "Very well, Ariana. I defer to your judgment," he said, his tone dripping with false deference.

"However, I still firmly believe the Ravenhurst family possesses the ideal combination of skills and expertise to spearhead this investigation."

Ariana's eyes flashed a warning, her piercing gaze boring into Marcellus. His smile faltered, his words dying on his lips, as her eyes blazed with a fierce intensity.

The atmosphere was heavy with tension, and the unspoken threat lurking beneath Marcellus's words hung ominously in the air.

Eadbert Weldher's eyes narrowed, his jaw clenched in a fierce scowl. He took a deliberate step forward, his massive frame looming ominously over Marcellus. "I think you've said enough, Ravenhurst," he growled, his low, menacing tone attempting to ease the tension.

Marcellus's smile remained steadfast, but his eyes betrayed a fleeting glimmer of unease. He knew he had overstepped, yet he couldn't restrain himself. A fierce ambition burned within him, a relentless fire that consumed his every thought, driving him to pursue power and control at any cost.

Ariana's voice sliced through the tension, her words laced with a frosty disdain. "Marcellus, I advise you to set aside your ambitions and focus on the task at hand. Our priority is to uncover the source of this energy signature, not to engage in futile power plays."

Marcellus's face contorted into a mocking smile, but his eyes blazed with suppressed fury. He bowed low, his voice heavy with sarcasm as he took several steps back, existing the room. "As you command, Ariana. I exist solely to obey your every whim.

Ariana caught Marcellus's eye. "Remember, Marcellus," she said, her voice low and menacing. "I'm watching you. If you betray the Decemvirate, you will regret it."

Marcellus's smile remained unwavering, but a fleeting glimmer of fear danced in his eyes. He was well aware that crossing Ariana, with the powerful alliances of the other influential families, would put his own family's survival at risk. To achieve his objectives, he would need to tread carefully.

As the tension in the room began to dissipate, Ariana turned to Eadbert.

"Eadbert, I would greatly appreciate it if you would collaborate with Marcellus to gather more information about the energy signature. I need a comprehensive analysis, no matter how minor the details may seem, to ensure everyone's safety and a casualty-free mission."

Eadbert nodded, his face still etched with concern. "I'll work with him, Ariana, but I don't trust him. He's hiding something."

Ariana's eyes narrowed. "I know, he can be a bit much sometimes. That's why we need to keep him at arm's lenght. We can't afford to let our guard down, not when we're dealing with something unknown."
