Chapter 23 - A Solo Mission

As Ariana walked out of the meeting room, a sense of unease settled over her. The road ahead was fraught with danger, and the stakes were higher than ever before. Lives were at stake, and she was determined to solve the problem, no matter the cost.

Though the game of power and deception had always been present, Ariana had never been interested in playing. Yet, as she walked away, her exhaustion couldn't shake off the nagging feeling that something was off.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm, golden light over the landscape, Ariana retreated to her chambers within the grandeur of the Halemont mansion.

Lost in thought, her mind wrestled with the unsettling implications of the energy signature and the ominous dangers that lurked within.

As Ariana entered her chambers, Ivy, her devoted and unobtrusive servant, greeted her with a gentle curtsy. Ivy's reserved demeanor belied a fierce loyalty to Ariana and her family, forged through years of dedicated service.

"Milady, I've taken the liberty of preparing a bath for you," Ivy said, her voice soft and soothing. "You appear weary; a brief respite might be beneficial."

Ariana's face lit up with a warm smile. "Thank you, Ivy. That's incredibly thoughtful of you."

As Ivy helped Ariana into the bath, Ariana felt a wave of relaxation wash over her. She knew that the coming days would be filled with danger and uncertainty, and she wasn't sure if she was ready.

As she settled into the warm bath, feeling the soothing water ease her muscles, clarity began to wash over her. With renewed resolve, she knew exactly what she had to do, and she steeled herself to see it through.

Just as Ariana was starting to unwind, a knock at the door shattered the tranquility. Ivy rose to answer it, and Ariana strained to listen as hushed voices murmured on the other side of the door.

Ivy returned, her countenance marked by a look of grave concern. "Milady, Eadbert Weldher requests your immediate attention. He stresses that the matter is of the utmost urgency."

Ariana's heart skipped a beat as she dreaded the impending news, hoping against hope that it wasn't dire.

She swiftly emerged from the bath, wrapping herself in a towel, and composed herself. "Show Eadbert Weldher in," she instructed, her voice steady and resolute.

As Eadbert entered the mansion, he was escorted to the living room, where Ariana awaited his arrival. Her gaze met his, and she was struck by the grave concern etched on his face. "Ariana, I've received some disturbing news," he began, his voice subdued and solemn.

"Several of our scouts have vanished in the south-east region. We suspect they were probing the energy signature."

Ariana's eyes narrowed, her mind racing with the implications. "When did we lose contact with them" she asked, her voice firm.

Eadbert hesitated, his expression grim. "Approximately an hour ago. A search party has been dispatched, but unfortunately, we've yet to uncover any sign of them."

Ariana's face hardened with resolve. "Bring me the search party's report immediately. I need every detail, no matter how insignificant it may seem."

Eadbert nodded solemnly, his expression grim. "I'll retrieve the report for you. But I must caution you: the situation is dire. Whatever force is at play, it's formidable. And it won't relinquish its secrets without a fight."

Ariana's eyes locked onto Eadbert's, her gaze intense. "I don't care what it takes. I want to find out what's going on and I want to stop it. We can't just sit back and wait for more people to go missing."

Her jaw clenched in determination. "I will stop at nothing to uncover the truth, Eadbert. Whatever is out there, I will put an end to it."

"Have you informed the Decemvirate of the situation?."

Eadbert's eyes narrowed, his expression cautionary. "Yes, the Decemvirate has been notified, but Ariana, I urge you to exercise restraint. Your determination is admirable, but it's not just your own safety at stake – the lives of others will be impacted by your actions."

Ariana's face set in a resolute expression. "I'll be fine, Eadbert. I'm more than capable of taking care of myself. And I'll ensure that those around me are protected as well."

Eadbert sighed, his shoulders sagging in resignation. "Very well, Ariana. I'll support you, but I implore you: tread carefully."

Ariana's expression softened. "Thank you, Eadbert. I appreciate your concern. I'll take every precaution, I promise."

As Eadbert departed, Ariana devoted her attention to the search party's report, scrutinizing every detail over the next few hours. Her mind whirled with theories and possibilities.

As she scrutinized the report further, Ariana discovered a peculiar detail. The missing scout's last known location was near an ancient, abandoned ruin - a site long whispered to be cursed, and consequently left untouched for centuries.

Ariana's gaze intensified, her heart racing with a sense of foreboding. She knew she couldn't afford to hesitate; every moment counted.

With a deepening sense of resolve, she steeled herself to investigate further, determined to uncover the truth before more lives were lost.

With a resolute glint in her eye, Ariana chose to embark on a solo mission to unravel the mystery, driven by her unwavering determination to rescue the missing scout and safeguard the lives of those who might follow.

Undaunted by the perils that lay ahead, she steeled herself for the challenge, her conviction to protect others burning stronger with every step.

As Ariana emerged from her chambers, Ivy hastened to her side, a worried expression etched on her face. "Milady, I implore you to reconsider venturing out alone. The risks are too great, and I fear for your safety."

Ariana's face softened into a reassuring smile, her eyes glinting with a hint of confidence. "Don't worry, Ivy. My magic will be my shield. I'll return safely, I promise."

Ivy's doubts were evident, but she held her tongue, knowing Ariana's resolve was unshakeable once her mind was set.

With a deep breath, Ariana set out into the unknown.
