Chapter 3 - Chapter 2: Duties and Decorum

The castle, with its ancient walls, stood tall and imposing against the backdrop of the morning sky. The first rays of the sun painted the sky in shades of gold and orange, casting a warm glow over the castle. As the gentle breeze wafted through the open windows, the sound of birds chirping and the scent of dew-kissed flowers filled the air, adding to the serene aura of the castle.

Inside the castle, the grand hall was a symphony of anticipation as the new trainee butlers gathered. They stood shoulder to shoulder, each exuding an air of formality and discipline. The head butler, a figure of authority with graying hair, stepped forward, casting a discerning eye over the assembly. He started speaking once the last of the butlers were in their positions.

"Now, we shall go over the rules once before everyone is assigned their tasks," he announced, his words carrying the weight of traditions. The trainees listened intently, their anticipation palpable.

"Rule number one," the head butler began, "A butler must never speak more than necessary." The solemnity of the rule settled over the room, and the trainees nodded in agreement.

"Rule number two," he continued, "Always knock three times before entering a room." The sound of three distinct knocks echoed in their minds, emphasizing the importance of politeness and respect.

"Rule number three," he emphasized, "We must never point with a singular finger but instead use an open palm-up hand." The trainees understood the significance of this rule, as it conveyed a sense of respect and subtlety.

As these foundational rules took root in the minds of the trainees, the head butler continued, adding more principles to the bedrock of their butler training.

"Rule number four," he began after ensuring everyone was paying attention, "A butler must always maintain impeccable personal grooming. Your appearance reflects the dignity of the household." The trainees understood that their appearance reflected the castle's reputation and prestige.

Once they heard the rule, the trainees understood that their role extended far beyond their tasks; they were to be the ideals for grace and refinement.

"Rule number five," he intoned, "A butler must be discreet and uphold the confidentiality of the castle. What transpires within these walls remains within these walls." Emphasizing trust and confidentiality, the trainees nodded in agreement. This rule resonated deeply with the trainees, stressing the importance of trust and preserving the castle's secrets.

"Rule number six," he continued, "A butler must anticipate the needs of the residents. Anticipation is the hallmark of a true butler." The trainees recognized that their duties went beyond physical; they were also responsible for the comfort and well-being of those they served. The trainees nodded, acknowledging that their duties went beyond physical; they were also responsible for the comfort and well-being of those they served.

The head butler added, "Rule number seven: A butler must exude an aura of steadfast loyalty and dedication. Your loyalty to the household must never waver." The weight of this rule slowly settled upon the trainees, emphasizing their unwavering commitment to the castle, no matter the challenges they might face.

"Additionally, the final rule," he said, ending for the rules, "New butlers, especially the human ones, shall not approach Lord Lucian or Lord Kieran without prior permission. We strictly prohibit everyone from entering their personal spaces or offices without explicit permission." This rule helped the trainees understand the clear boundaries within the castle, reinforcing the importance of their role and the distinctions they must adhere to.

With these rules imparted, the head butler concluded the briefing. "Remember these rules as you carry out your duties," he advised. "They are the foundation of a true butler's character."

The trainees diligently listened to every word, absorbing all these teachings, their sense of purpose deepening with each new rule. As they dispersed to fulfill their assigned tasks, the castle continued to breathe, its legacy upheld by the diligent butlers who served within its walls.

"Now," the head butler started speaking again, "I shall assign you your tasks for the day," he announced, his voice steady and unwavering.

"Sebastian," he addressed one of the trainees, who received his task with apprehension and relief. "You will be on dusting duty for the day. Ensure that every nook and cranny in this castle gleams in bright light as if the sun had touched it." Emphasizing the importance of attention to detail, Sebastian nodded, determined to prove his dedication despite the mundane nature of his task.

He then turned his attention to the other trainees, continuing to assign their tasks, each task tailored to showcase the trainees' strengths and talents. As Matteo gave each labor, the trainees understood the importance of their role in maintaining the castle's legacy, and their sense of duty and purpose grew stronger.

"Clara, you shall oversee the preparation of the evening's meal. Ensure it is a culinary masterpiece worthy of the castle's esteemed residents."

"Julian, you are responsible for organizing the library and ensuring the books are in impeccable order."

"Irene, your duty is to oversee the fine china and silverware. Ensure that every piece in the dining room sparkles with perfection. Remember, the presentation is as vital as the meal itself."

"Leon, you will review the afternoon tea service in the grand parlor. Ensure you are performing flawlessly, down to the last detail."

"Rein, your daily task is to manage the back gardens. Prune the roses, tend to the shrubs, and ensure that the garden blooms with vitality."

As Matteo assigned each task, the trainees understood the importance of their role in maintaining the castle's legacy. They were not just butlers but the guardians of tradition and the embodiment of grace and refinement.

The grand hall, once brimming with anticipation, now saw the butlers dispersing throughout the castle, each focused on their assigned duty. The ancient dwelling came alive with purpose as they set about their tasks, the castle seemingly welcoming their efforts.

Sebastian nodded in acknowledgment as the head butler handed him a feather duster. His assignment was to begin dusting duties within the castle's hallowed hallways. Alone with his task, Sebastian felt a sense of calm wash over him. He began meticulously dusting each windowsill, his movements measured and precise.

Sebastian felt a sense of pride in his work, knowing that his task was just as vital as any other in the castle. He knew that with the foundation of a clean and dust-free environment, he could execute the other tasks with a different level of perfection.

The process had an almost therapeutic quality, as if cleansing the castle's surfaces was a symbolic cleansing of his uncertainties. Once done with the windowsills, Sebastian moved on to the drawing room. He attentively dusted the tables and bar surfaces, ensuring he had thoroughly cleaned every little detail.

Opulent chandeliers adorn the room; the chamber seemed to watch over him as he worked it, reminding him of the castle's grandeur. With the drawing room immaculate, Sebastian decided to tackle the music room next. As he entered the room, his eyes drew to the neatly lined up expensive instruments, and he looked at them in awe.

The room seemed to hum with the promise of waiting to play beautiful melodies. Sebastian scolded himself inwardly; he reminded himself that a butler's focus should never waver.

As the day wore on, Sebastian continued to move from room to room, dusting and polishing every surface. He felt satisfied and purposeful in his work, knowing he contributed to the castle's heritage.

Amid his duties, servants' bells rang through the castle, announcing lunchtime. Sebastian's stomach grumbled, temporarily eclipsing his sense of duty, and went through the halls, following the irresistible aroma wafting from the kitchen.

Before the servants could proceed to the dining area, Matteo summoned all the trainees for a debriefing. He commended them on their hard work and dedication and reminded them of the importance of their roles in maintaining the castle's standards.

Sebastian felt a sense of accomplishment as he listened to Matteo's words. He knew he had proven himself on his first day as a butler in Lucian's castle. He was filled with purpose, knowing he was part of something greater than himself.
