Chapter 22 - Memories

Ramuna did her best to stay clear of Ramesses after the incident in his room. A few days had passed and Ammut, Tafari and her worked hard on continuing their plan to reverse the time of the living world.

They knew even though they were gods this would be no small feat and that when they returned back to ancient Kemet or as some put it Egypt; there would be deities that knew what they had done. Whether it would be a good thing or a bad thing but all who mastered Heka to the point where they reached godhood would still have their memories. Whether they had already perished or were still alive in the now. Others may be angry at what they have done. Maybe some would be grateful.

Ramuna couldn't help but wonder if once she went back she would immediately find the real Set or would he already still be split up in many bodies that were just puppets of him. If so, where would the true source of him be?

Her biggest fear was that the main source of her husband would still be down in Duat with Apep. It also made her wonder if it was still there now. Past the pyramid Hawara where Ramesses fought the snake now.

No. It couldn't be. If it was, I would have sensed it when I went down there, right?

What if his soul is torn into so many pieces he is forever lost…

Ramuna had to get her mind off these thoughts. Regardless if Set was around or not she still had a job she had to do. One she neglected by jumping through time and skipping thousands of years where Atann had been at a time they needed her most.

She couldn't help but to feel that everything was her fault.

Because the truth is that it is my fault.

Ramuna did not realize how much she truly needed Set. So this is what it felt like to not be balanced?

Just like the yin and yang theory. Just like how there could be no light if there had been no darkness she utterly felt empty and without reason to exist.

Is this why love exists among humans? Did we create that concept too, Set? Due to our duties among this world?

Ramuna felt a tear slide down her cheek. It didn't matter how many times she screamed out her thoughts she knew there would be no one to return an answer. All that mattered now was that at least she had Tafari and Ammut by her side. The god of knowledge and the goddess who could condemn evil. Very two strong things to have on the battlefield to kick things off.

Even though Ramuna had a funny feeling once they went back they would be more in a psychological warfare with others rather than physical.

After her and the others meeting she went inside the pub to head to her room to rest. Knowing they were going back she did not want to get attached to anyone in this city not knowing if she would see them in ancient times. Ammut enjoyed traveling through the streets and talking with the people. Ramuna was rather impressed that the woman who was the devourer of souls was actually a major socialite and Tafari… well Tafari spent most of his time in Hawara studying everything the glowing walls had to offer and each night he waited for Ramesses to show up so they could fight the giant snake together.

As Ramuna made her way to the stairs she noticed Ramesses sitting at the end of the bar talking to the owner as they both drank. This had been the third day she caught him in that same spot drinking and speaking to others. Sometimes it wouldn't be the owner but one of the customers. No matter what he had the same sorrowful look on his face.

Was this because of what happened in his room between them?

No. It can't be. Something else must have happened.

Ramuna was sure of one thing and that thing was that Ramesses was prideful and knew exactly what he was doing at all times. Something else must have happened. She also did not understand why he drank if he truly could never get drunk.

It doesn't concern me what he does in his spare time.

She looked away and made her way up the stairs. Whatever was bothering him she knew he could figure it out on his own. Or spin up another thread of lies about it.

As Ramuna went to her bedroom balcony and laid down on the chaise watching the people down below her she drifted off into her own thoughts. Reliving some of her memories she thought she would never get to reminisce on again. She closed her eyes and let herself drown in the memory.

She was at a huge golden door in the hall of a palace. No, not just any palace it was their palace. Hidden amongst the field of reeds where they knew no mortal or other deity could enter.

Without knocking her memory self just pushed open the door knowing it would possibly irritate the person on the other side.

"I SAID I WAS BUSY. GOODNESS GRACIOUS."

Set looked up in a fit of rage, his eyes glowing bright red. He was sitting at a very large desk that was stacked with documents he was looking over. Behind him was a huge glass window that covered the whole back wall and beyond it was a beautiful green forest and in the far off distance she could see a waterfall and river making its way to their palace. It was a beautiful view yet he had his back turned to it with his face buried in papers. It actually saddened Ramuna.

Set's angry gaze quickly vanished when he noticed it was his wife entering the room. He quickly stood up, dropping the paper that was in his hand. He was in a black uniform with trimmed gold and had a golden bandanna covering his forehead. Ramuna never understood why he wore that thing except to look childish. His hair still managed to fall down over the bandanna; barely getting into his eyes.

He gave her a small smile. "My apologies, my love, if I had known it was you I would have kept my loud mouth shut."

Set walked towards her his arms open, when he reached her he gave her a small kiss on the head and embraced her. He didn't let go of her for a long time till she had to peek up at him from his tight embrace.

"Are you going to let go?" She said a bit muffled.

"I wish I never had to," Set said, sighing sadly. He finally let her go and took a step back. "Well what brings my beautiful wife here! You get bored of Earth that quick? You were only gone an hour!"

Ramuna couldn't help but see the little playful light in his eyes even though they were burning red. "I was actually gone for a whole week. You just failed to notice because you never came out of this room."

Set scoffed and shook his head walking back to his desk. "If these damned Egyptians didn't give me so many damn things to document I would be able to come out more often! All they care about is war and stealing wives out of other kingdoms! Stabbing their own friends in the backs! My gods! What have we given birth to! Is this truly a reflection of us?"

Ramuna watched as he slumped back into the chair in front of his desk and put his hands on his face and took a deep sigh. "You know what will happen if I go out there, my love. They will not like me if I have to step out on their very own battlefields."

"Well… " Ramuna said slowly. "Maybe that's what our children need."

Set laughed and shook his head again looking up at her with saddened eyes. "That's silly coming from you. You are the one who tells me not to be a control freak with them."

"At this point I am just desperate to get you out of this room. I am getting lonely going out there by myself. The only time I see you is when-"

"Don't say that thing's name," Set snarled, cutting her off.

Ramuna knew he was talking about Apep. It was in fact the only time they saw each other. When the sun went down and the moon began to rise on the eastern side of the world. That's when Apep constantly tried to take power.

Set sighed and leaned back in his chair, eyeing her like a prize he had not yet won. "Come here," He said, urging her to come over to him.

Ramuna slowly walked over to the desk and to her surprise he quickly snatched her off her feet and put her in his lap.

"Set!" Ramuna said, taken aback.

Set just laughed and wrapped his arms around her. "You said you were getting bored lady! And I miss the love I get from you. Just shut up and let me hold you for a moment. I would do anything to be like this forever instead of drowning in work."

Ramuna sighed and leaned back into him allowing him to embrace her. "What would you do if we weren't… what we are now?"

Set looked at her giving her more playful looks as he nuzzled her neck and then gave her a quick kiss on the cheek. "I would get on a damned boat and travel across the seas. The one thing man's been scared to do. Discover all the other lands for myself. See what's on them. Of course I would have to bribe some mortals to come with me. Who knows what monsters are lurking in no man's lands."

Ramuna laughed at his answer. "So you want to run around playing a pirate?"

Set gave her the biggest grin he had yet since she entered his office. "To be in a world full of people but to be in the one spot where no humans can reach you? Out at sea? Sounds pretty peaceful to me."

Ramuna opened her eyes, shaking herself from the memory. She had not realized she had been crying as she looked back at her past. How would he react now if she found him after being apart for so long? Did he even remember her? Had he gone mad because of the time he spent being immortal?

She sat up in her chaise trying to get herself to focus on anything but being in her head. No matter how many memories she looked back into she could never find a clue on where he could be but possibly out at sea.

With how much you talked about it, Set. It was almost like you loved the idea of living that life more than me. I really hope you got to experience it. It's all I want at this point.
