Chereads / Goddess Of Hidden Light / Chapter 5 - Just a magic trick

Chapter 5 - Just a magic trick

He stood at the doorway inside of the bunker. Trying to offer some sort of security in their imprisonment. The children were all soundly asleep in the back corner on the floor. No mats or blankets to cover them. The elders of the children did their best to offer what clothing they had on their backs to keep the children warm and he offered the children what he could. The slumbering escape to dream and explore the lunar world of Kemet. Before he had arrived in the cell he had witnessed the children running through the streets playing marbles unaware that the streets that they now roamed was not their home of Atann but Kemet. Ignorance was bliss and he was just grateful he could offer that to the last of Atann's living children even if it was for a short while as they slept each night.

In the other back corner of the room was Ramuna's unconscious body. As usual she was twitching in her slumber. Almost as if she was about to have a seizure at any moment. It was impressive how much her mind and body was fighting his hold. In fact she did not even have a clue that she was fighting his powers. As far as he could tell in Kemet she was all the more happy to stay on the lunar world as long as it meant not having to wake up to face her fiance.

That was what sparked his interest the most. He walked over to the shaking body looking down at Ramuna. Her brown hair was matted to her forehead from sweat and her constant restless state. Her white shirt was soaked from sweat as well and her black suspenders, wiped of their holster and all its weapons, were sliding off her shoulders.

As far as the New Worlders outside the bunker were concerned they thought radiation had got to her while she had been outside during the detonation. How wrong they were though. As long as he existed the New Worlders had an enemy. Unfortunately for them no amount of gunfire or explosives could kill him. Ramuna's atomic bomb was proof of that. Now if he had given in to most of his human nature he learned to become accustomed to he may have died from the absolute heartbreak of watching his people one moment thriving and the next having their skin and flesh blasted right off them in a millisecond but he was used to quickly controlling his actions and clearing his mind.

Afterall he was as old as Kemet's creation and that was a god awful long time. This was going to be the first time with his visitation inside the bunker to see her physical body that he was going to test something very risky. It may well be something that she might catch him doing even in her subconscious being back on the lunar world. He had to be at full focus and quick about it. The amulet kept vibrating with power when it was near her. Something he had never seen it do in his lifetime and that shook him to his core. Thousands of years and no sign of Ra and now? Of all times. Now? Was Ra warning him and the remaining people of Atann to get rid of her quickly? Or was it trying to…

No. Impossible. He quickly shut that thought out. Ramuna was not even a descendant of Atann. Just looking over her fair skin and light brown hair anyone could tell she screamed New Worlder blood. There was no way the amulet was trying to find a home with her. One could not assume though and with all the time he had been alive he knew he could not look this over. The last time he looked something over the outcome had been an assassination of one of the most powerful pharaohs Atann had ever seen and caused a whole religion and society to crumble. An important one at that.

Alright, Ramuna. Who are you exactly?

Before he could focus on the vibrations inside her mind he heard a soft rattling. He turned slowly to the floor a few feet away from her body and saw the amulet that the High Priestess hid under a small pile of broken pottery. He had to be careful if he wanted to investigate. He knew no one could see him inside the bunker but he would be a fool to think that the High Priestess couldn't smell his arcane magic pooling out of him in this small bunker. Depending what Atann God she worshiped he might even be seen as an enemy.

He now focused his mind on the amulet and closed his eyes. Soon everything around him became eerily silent and the room shifted to the room he brought Ramuna when she first arrived on Kemet. When he opened his eyes he stood in front of the black stone slab. The amulet lay on it still vibrating with intensity.

He drew a hieroglyphic in the air with his index finger at eye level and continued the pattern over and over again until a bluish light outlined the hex he casted in the air. It slowly moved away from his face and hovered a few inches over the golden amulet that was almost shaped like an acorn. After a few moments the bluish light dashed down into the amulet.

And then…

Nothing.

Nothing.

Complete silence. The hex he created had vanished as if it had completed its job at reading the power inside of the amulet. The walls had no knowledge to offer him though…

He looked around desperately, almost as desperate as Ramuna had been when she was looking for an exit from the room to escape his wrath.

"Where are you? Where are you?! WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU!"

The amulet shattered as it hit the far pillar near the entrance with impressive precision. He fell to his knees in defeat leaning his back against the black stone. Don't you dare fucking cry. How old are you? Who are you? Someone like you is past that.

No matter how much he tried to calm himself down he could not. This was different. Everything that meant anything to him was not even where it should be and Ra only knew where Ra could have been. His existence was only for one purpose and that was to keep civilization intact as much as possible and to make sure they advanced in peace. Ra blessed him with that purpose. Gave him the gift to live on the planet that Atann no longer existed in. What was he to do? Go to the New World? Try to change the perspective of civilization there?

He felt utter disgust at the thought of that. He saw the New World as far gone as the New World thought Atann was. The views and definition of what "gone too far" meant just happened to mean two different things to both of those parties, unfortunately.

Refusing to let himself stay in a pitiful state he closed his eyes and shifted back inside the bunker. He was still on his knees leaning against a wall; it just happened to be the wall right beside Ramuna's unconscious physical form. He looked over at the amulet that was intact and hidden under the pottery as if he never touched it. Well now he knew that any form of Ra's power was not in that thing. The vessel was just probably acting up to fool people into thinking it was important. Sometimes deities did that to mess with humans and make them believe in an artifact that might have divine powers but to the god's it was nothing more than just a magician's trick.

Now it ended up fooling someone of his status as well. Or maybe he finally reached a low he never thought he could reach. He was desperate for some kind of guidance from Ra or at least to be told that he failed his job at protecting the people of Atann and to expect a swift death as punishment. He had to admit to himself and come to terms with what he truly knew now. He was lost and scared. Just like the average human who experienced extreme loss.

He realized now that it was merely a simple magic trick that was now keeping Ramuna from being murdered by this bunker full of prisoners. Was it even worth it to continue to keep her in Kemet? Maybe he should let the people left of Atann to have their bit of vengeance now that he knew there was no connection between her and the amulet.

He almost was tempted to lift his power off of her that kept her sedated and trapped in Kemet until he heard her unconscious form start to whisper. Whisper very incoherently. The woman wasn't even making any damn sense.

How was she even able to talk? Her subconscious was in Kemet! How was she talking out loud here in this bunker? Anything she said had to be said in Kemet but whatever her unconscious form was rambling about made no sense to whatever subconscious Ramona was doing now. It was impossible to have multiple consciousness! Was she possessed?

He leaned closer to listen but the sounds around him drowned her out. He watched as the High Priestess cursed in her foreign tongue and knelt down beside Ramuna unaware of the being that also was knelt down next to the unconscious woman. A few men rushed to their side as well. Possibly the servants of the High Priestess. Her black robes pooled around her almost like black water as she got to the ground and leaned her head over Ramuna's body and listened.

"Ack!" The High Priestess hissed. "I wish I understood it fully. She is speaking in Sumerian tongue again."

It felt like his heart stopped and the world froze around him. He knew Sumerian. It was the world's first civilized language. Where he had been born… No one knew Sumerian. Matter of fact there were times where he feared he would forget his own native language.

How was she speaking his language?

Without a second thought he took the risk even with the High Priestess so close to him and Ramuna. He quickly drew a hieroglyphic in the air over and over again as fast as he could and entered her mind. Damned the consequences of the High Priestess finding him out or Ramuna.
