Chapter 82 - Aftermath (Part 2)

"Let's have a little talk..." Ada suggested. Meanwhile, Garfield had sweat profusely from the sudden entrance of Ada and her gang. "I can help you bring this country from the brink of destruction.

"Do...you know how much trouble you guys are in!?" A bodyguard inquired.

"C'mon, it's fine!" Ada responded to him. "You don't need to worry! We're good people!"

"G-Good people...O-Oh..." He responded as both he and his allies became relaxed. Happy with their 'understanding', Ada turned her gaze back to the president. Her friendly smile slowly disappeared as she began to rub her chin.

"Hmm, I don't like our seating positions," Ada remarked, causing President Garfield's eyebrows to raise with confusion.

"W-What do you mean?" Garfield stuttered.

"Don't you think it's poor taste for me, a beautiful woman, to sit on this hard chair while you get the comfy president chair?" Inquired Ada as she regained her smile. This question caused Garfield's mouth to open, leaving a stunned expression on his face.

"What...?"

"Ugh...so stiff..." Ada said as she began tossing and turning on the chair she sat on. Meanwhile, her allies stared at Garfield, waiting for his reaction but not moving.

Ugh...I feel like...I should give her...

"Here...let's switch seats." The president suggested as he got up.

"Wow! Really? Chivalry isn't dead after all!" Ada happily commented. They quickly switched places, with Ada sitting at the president's desk and Garfield sitting on the regular chair on the other side.

"Ahh...much better," Ada remarked.

"So...what do you wish to speak about?" He asked.

"Well, I wanna ask something first. Do you have any plans to combat this whole...situation in the country?" Ada responded. Hearing that, Garfield lowered his head in a downtrodden and depressed way.

"N-No..." He replied. "T-There's nothing I can do."

"The super soldiers have likely failed, which is why there's mass destruction," Ada said. "I'm not trying to be offensive, but don't you think this wouldn't have happened if smarter decisions were taken?"

"...That's true."

"Don't you think you had a part to play in that poor decision-making?" Ada continued. "You're partly to be blamed for all this."

"Y-Yes...but were you not with the criminals?" Garfield countered. "The criminals were the ones--"

"Didn't I tell you already? I was under duress. I had no choice but to work with them." Ada reminded. "I tried my best to avoid any crimes."

"Yes...I remember. My apologies for bringing that up."

"I take it you have officially pardoned me and cleared my name up, right?" Ada questioned as she put her feet on the desk.

"Yes, of course." His response made Ada smile a bit brighter.

"Anyways, the only way to save the country now is for a proper leader to rise." Ada continued. "One not afraid to make hard decisions for the welfare of this country."

"...Are you saying I'm not good enough?"

"No, no. That's not what I'm saying at all! You're a good leader, Garfield...a very good one." Ada corrected. "You funded the research on the super soldiers, which took care of the crime rate for a long while. You've done well."

"But--"

"But, it isn't enough, I'm afraid," Ada said. "The enemy was unfortunately too much for you. Even though I gave you and those military officers information about the S-Class criminals, you failed to eliminate them. Make no mistake, whatever you all planned, I'm sure it was good, but they were just too much for you."

"...Maybe so," Garfield agreed. "Then, who could possibly save this country?"

"Heh, you haven't realized. The same beautiful, intelligent woman that gave you the information is the same woman that's suitable for that task!" Ada responded as she winked.

What she said shocked the bodyguards and the president, as they never expected an answer like that.

"I-Is that so?" Garfield asked.

"Don't you believe so? I think I have what it takes."

"To...be the next president of the United States?" Garfield asked.

"Exactly!" Ada exclaimed excitedly. "My friends over there are colleagues in a grand...organization that I built and run. I've got a knack for running successful groups, so I know I'm the only one who can liberate this seemingly doomed country."

"Man, I'm so proud of Ada..." Frank whispered to his group. "Her dream is finally coming true..."

"Shhh," Charlotte muttered.

"Y-You may be right." Garfield agreed once again. "For some reason, just from seeing you and hearing your voice, I think you can handle this..."

Ada chuckled a bit in response.

"Don't worry. I know the pressure of the country's current state is greater than you can handle. You can rest now...I'll take this off your hands." Ada advised.

"...Rest...no...I don't deserve any rest...for what I've done..," Garfield stated. "It's all my fault...so many deaths...I am a horrible leader..."

"Ah...you're feeling guilt. That's understandable," Ada remarked. "It seems giving you a much-needed rest is the best solution to your guilt."

"What...do you...mean?" Garfield asked.

"Looks like that's my cue," Leon said before approaching Garfield."

"You won't be able to live with yourself after knowing how many lives your poor decisions took. I believe the best decision would be to kill yourself, don't you think?" Ada asked.

"What...?" A bodyguard exclaimed as he raised his eyebrows in shock.

"C'mon, that's the only way! Do you want your president to suffer psychologically, or do you not want to help him?" Ada asked with a sincere expression of confusion. Hearing her reasoning, the guards' confusion dissipated, and they relaxed yet again.

Simultaneously, Leon approached Garfield and offered a handgun to him.

"...You're right..." Garfield said as he took the firearm. "I should get some 'rest'. I'll leave the title of president to you."

"Yes, of course! I won't let you down!" Ada declared. "You don't have to worry about letting everyone know who the new president is. We'll take care of that."

"...Thank you," Garfield responded as he stood up and placed the gun at his chin. "I don't know why...but hearing your voice has helped me..."

Ada didn't respond but simply kept smiling at him.

BANG!

Garfield pulled the trigger, immediately causing blood and brain matter to splatter all over the ceiling and the mat of the Oval Office. His lifeless body dropped to the ground as the firearm fell from his equally lifeless hand.

The bodyguards watched with absolutely no emotion as the one they were supposed to protect had taken his own life.

"Congratulations!" Frank exclaimed as he began clapping. "You did it! You're the new president, Miss Ada!"

"Well deserved," Charlotte added.

"The only suitable President," Nolan added. "This calls for a celebration."

Leon simply nodded with a smile on his face.

"Could you guys please clean this up?" Ada pleaded to the bodyguards. "The smell of the blood is getting in my nostrils.

"N-No problem..." A bodyguard said as they quickly approached Garfield's corpse to carry him out.

Ada relaxed in her seat as she kept her legs on the desk.

Ah...my hard work is done now. I now have this whole country as my plaything. Ada thought. I understand more about my 'blessing' now. Judging by how easy it was to manipulate that idiotic president, other people with blessings must have a resistance to it...which is why the useless Zack fought it somewhat. Nathan must have had a higher resistance, though...

Well, whatever...I'm the president now. Ada continued her internal monologue. I have the control now...and I will make you suffer as I bend and break you, Nathan...
