I had to blink a few times to regain control of my thoughts.
Snape clearly didn't want to be here and he made a point of demonstrating this with his inept teaching practices.
Holy the Dao! I've lost count of how many times I've been forced to study at Schools, Academies, Universities, but Hogwarts manages to host one of the worst faculty choices I've ever experienced.
The man clearly knew what he was talking about. But the disgust he had to teach was visible from miles away.
This world has its own magical laws, so my journey here will be one of the most complex I've ever had.
I need to reorganize my mind to stop thinking the way I usually think, because here almost none of the things are like I'm used to.
Magizoology doesn't differ that much from what I'm used to, creatures have their defense mechanisms, we need to know how to avoid them so as not to die, everything's fine.
But the Herbology of this world left me more than lost.
A low-level world like this has semi-sentient flora, something that only some of the larger mid- and high-level worlds have.
And the way the ingredients mix to form potions in this world seems a bit barbaric to me. They do not know the concept of concentration, division and formation of Dans.
Not to mention the need for specific cures and antidotes for different things, it's as if they never invested in research for basic formulas, they focus too much on just one use.
As one of the 17 greatest alchemists in the Supreme Realm, I decided to apply my knowledge to make this cure for ringworm become something really useful.
I admit it seems like a very specific number... Okay, I'm seventeenth on the list of Supreme Realm alchemists, but I don't need a higher position than that because Celine, one of my wives, ranks second only behind Alchemy God Chen Fan.
With the amount of ingredients available for a single dose I could probably make three or four Dans with the same effect.
Celine would get seven or eight... from second place to seventeenth the difference is big, I admit.
I controlled the fire with my wand and the liquid inside the cauldron began to evaporate quickly, my colleagues seeing this immediately moved away from me, expecting it to explode.
My little magical power was running out fast, but I soon managed to reach my goal. Placing the lid on the cauldron I began to move my wand to divide the concentrate into portions to solidify the Dans.
"Mr Mao, what do you think you are doing?" – asked Professor Snape.
His tone of voice and his mocking expression were enough to scare the other students.
"Dans." – I replied.
He was walking towards me to stop my efforts, but stopped when he heard me.
"This class is potions, Mr Mao, you can study the art of your ancestors in your spare time. – he declared, resuming his movements towards me.
The concept of Dans exists in this world, a huge relief, but they're probably so bad they can barely get these recipes right on the first try.
Potions are actually easier to make, but they are much less effective, not to mention they taste horrible.
When he was ready to raise his wand and interrupt me, I let my body relax, as the Dans were ready.
The confusion was evident on his face.
With a start he went to my cauldron and opened it.
Two Dans were present in the background, perfectly round and shiny.
I overestimated my abilities without my soul energy. One of the simplest recipes and I spent almost all my magic reserves to complete it.
With his wand Professor Snape levitated the Dans from the cauldron and inspected them closely.
"As far as I know, your father wasn't versed in Dans, Mr. Mao? – he asked, suspecting that I was hiding something.
I didn't like the way he was looking at me and the ease with which he mentioned my father.
"He died before I was born, so I couldn't say." – I replied.
His expression contorted briefly at my response.
"This is a potions class, I hope you understand that from now on." – he said, turning around and walking back to his table with my Dans.
My esteemed colleagues watched me as almost half of the potions being made went wrong.
Luckily no cauldron exploded.
It didn't take long for the class to end and lunch time to arrive.
I stayed in the room until only the Professor and I were present.
"What do you want, Mr Mao? – he asked, trying to pulverize me with his eyes.
I gave him a half smile.
"Not many know who my father was, I wouldn't go around mentioning him if I were you Professor." - warned.
The only people who knew who my father was were his companions or executioners.
I expected him to be part of the later.
"Your warning is unnecessary, Mister Mao." – he declared, clearly dismissing my words.
I shrugged and headed towards the Great Hall.
As I approached the table I could feel an increasing number of eyes being directed at me.
This incident will once again serve as an excuse for them to harass me.
Strangely enough, there was an empty seat next to Bridget.
As I debated with myself whether or not I should sit next to her, the girl turned towards me and motioned for me to sit there.
"To what do I owe the pleasure of the invitation?" – I asked as I sat down.
"How did you do that, from what I read Dans are only used by super rich wizarding families in Asia because they don't taste bad, they use more ingredients and are much more difficult to make than potions and you made two with a single batch of ingredients?" – she began to question me as soon as I got ready in my seat.
I thought for a moment and my provocative side ended up winning.
"I can give you two options: Talent or Luck. Which one do you prefer?" – I replied.
Bridget tried to analyze my face trying to figure out the answer, but all she saw was a confident half-smile.
"Alright, keep your secrets." – finally she gave up.
She didn't want to believe that I had achieved this on my own without any tricks.
I smiled even more at that moment, her sullen face was cute.
