Chapter 44 - Chapter 44: De Facto Leader

As Akira detailed the risky areas teeming with heightened alien activity, Elodie noticed Beatrice's attention drifting away from the explanation. Instead of focusing on the crucial information, Beatrice seemed more captivated by Akira's demeanor – his confident aura and composed demeanor.

Elodie observed a subtle shift in Beatrice's demeanor, her gaze lingering a bit too long on Akira. Despite the gravity of the situation and the warning Akira provided, Beatrice appeared more taken by Akira's charisma and outward composure. It was evident that his cool and collected persona had caught her attention, overshadowing the urgency of their surroundings.

As Akira finished outlining the dangerous zones beyond the perimeter, Az, Lumi, and Freyn strolled over, Deus and Nyx trailed behind them, approaching the group's location.

Az, curious about the conversation, turned to Beatrice with an inquisitive expression.

"What are you guys talking about?" Az asked Beatrice, casting a glance at Beatrice, who seemed lost in her thoughts.

Beatrice, jolted back to reality by a discreet pinch from Elodie, blinked owlishly. "Huh, what?" she stammered, regaining her composure. "Oh, you guys! How long have you been here?"

Az, caught off guard by the abrupt shift in her demeanor, stammered back, "We just arrived. What about you? You seemed… preoccupied."

Beatrice's lips curved into a sly smile. "Oh, I'm good, very good," she purred, a playful wink glinting in her eyes.

Az, momentarily flustered by the unexpected wink, turned to Elodie with a questioning glance. "What's gotten into her?" he whispered, his voice laced with amusement.

Elodie chuckled softly, her eyes twinkling with knowing amusement. "Oh, that's just Beatrice's way of reacting to… certain charismatic individuals," she explained, her voice trailing off meaningfully as she gestured towards Akira.

"Ah, Nyx," Akira exclaimed, his voice tinged with recognition. "I didn't see you there."

"Wait, you guys know each other?" Az was surprised.

Akira, ever the smooth operator, flashed a charming grin. "Well, guess you could say it's a party reunion," he replied with a grin. "Nyx, Deus, and I are a team, you know."

Az extended a friendly hand toward Akira. "What a coincidence. Beatrice and Elodie here are part of my party." He gestured towards them with a smile.

He greets Az's hand, and with quick efficiency, Akira responds, "You must be the group leader, huh?"

Az, feeling a bit bashful, shook his head. "Nah, I don't think our party has a leader."

The group shared a lighthearted laugh, the camaraderie evident among them.

In the midst of their laughter, Az scanned the group and realized Hex was missing. "I don't think I've seen Hex around. Does anyone know where he went?"

Elodie quickly replied to Az's inquiry, "Ah, he mentioned something about finding a way to communicate with the outside world, he seem concerned about someone named Uno."

"Well, I hope he's fine being alone," Az nodded in understanding, reassured that Hex was on a quest of importance.

Az turned to Akira, his curiosity piqued. "What were you all discussing earlier?"

Akira leaned in, his expression pressing. "We were discussing the heightened alien activity. There's a specific location heavily guarded by some powerful aliens."

He continued, explaining the area they were currently in, a relatively safe zone in the middle. "North, east, west, and south are rumored to be controlled by the aliens. Many who ventured there never returned. So, the rumors might hold some truth."

Az's interest piqued further. "Do you know why it's so heavily guarded? What might be there?"

Akira's tone grew serious. "Based on the accounts of survivors in Hamlet Crossroad, it's possible that the heavily guarded place is their spaceship base."

Az's eyes darted briefly to Freyn, thoughts racing. Perhaps this could be their opportunity.

Observing the conversation, Deus finally chimed in. "You seem quite interested in this information," he said, a curious smile playing on his lips as he noticed Az's eagerness for the mentioned location.

"We have our reasons," Az replied guardedly, not willing to reveal their motives.

Deus chuckled, a low, rumbling sound. "I won't pry further into your… business," he assured, his eyes twinkling with a strange, knowing light. "However, I must inform you that we're planning to raid that location soon."

Nyx, apprehensive, attempted to intervene after sensing a potential breach in their information, shot Deus a sharp look. "Perhaps it's best not to share too much information, Deus," she hissed.

Deus waved her off dismissively. "It's fine," he assured her, turning back to Az with an ambiguous intention. "Right?"

Az and Deus held each other's gaze for a long moment, a silent understanding passing between them. This was no ordinary exchange of information; it was a challenge, a veiled threat, and a potential offer of alliance, all wrapped in one.

As the conversation unfolded, Az began to sense the unspoken dynamics within the group before him. Deus's confident demeanor and the way the others deferred to him indicated a certain leadership role.

Az observed their interactions and the subtle nods of agreement when Deus spoke. It became clear to Az that, in this group, Deus was the de facto leader.

However, being part of a group that operated without a clear leader, Az couldn't help but admire the efficiency and unity displayed by Deus and his companions.

"Fine," Nyx says, "If we are going on a raid together, we need to see your guys' fighting ability, sorry to say but I don't want anybody to be a hindrance."

Nyx's words hung in the air, the implication clear to everyone present. They needed to ensure each member of the combined group was capable and reliable in combat situations, a necessary assessment before venturing into potentially dangerous territory.

Deus nodded in agreement. "It's a fair request. We'll need to be in sync if we're going to navigate this together."

Az glanced around at his companions, understanding the weight of Nyx's words. "We can handle ourselves," he assured, his gaze fixed on Nyx. "But maybe a small demonstration won't hurt."

Akira, always ready for a challenge, stepped forward with a confident smile. "I'm game." His energy seemed to set the tone for the moment.

Elodie stepped up next to Az, while Beatrice, despite her initial dreamy demeanor, readied herself too. "Let's do this," she said, determination clear in her eyes.

Deus shared crucial information about the nearby alien base during their recent reconnaissance. "We've identified a new base not far from here," he announced, his tone firm and decisive. "In two days, we're launching a raid on the place as a 'test'."

"Until then, make yourselves at home here. Prepare, rest up, and get ready for what's coming." Deus remarked to Az's group.

Az and his team exchanged knowing glances. The sudden announcement injected a sense of purpose into their stay. They nodded in silent acknowledgment, each understanding the importance of preparing for the upcoming mission.

"We'll be ready," Az assured, a determined look in his eyes as he addressed Deus. "We'll make sure to be in top shape when the time comes."

Nyx, observing quietly, gave a nod of confirmation. "Rest well and get ready," she added, emphasizing the need for everyone to be in peak condition for what lay ahead.

Nyx and Deus exchanged a knowing glance, their eyes glinting with a mixture of curiosity and appraisal. "Show us what you've got," Nyx challenged, her voice laced with a hint of amusement. She was eager to see the skills of this ragtag group, to assess their potential value as allies or rivals.

As Deus and Nyx turned and started walking away, a movement caught Az's eye.

Beatrice, with a mischievous glint in her eyes, had begun to follow after Akira. Az, with a quick reflex, grabbed her ear gently, "Not so fast, Beatrice," he chided, pulling her back.

Trying to wriggle free from Az's grip, "Ouch, ouch!" Beatrice cried out, and winced in pain, rubbing her ear with a playful pout. "What was that for?"

Az released Beatrice's ear with a warning look. "Where are you going, huh? Stay here and help out," he instructed firmly, his eyes scanning the rest of the group to ensure they were ready. "Don't wander off," Az reprimanded with a stern but affectionate smile. "We have a lot to discuss, and I need you focused."

Elodie stifled a laugh, seeing Az's attempt to keep Beatrice from tagging along with Akira. "Come on, Beatrice, let's focus on our prep for the raid," she chimed in, trying to defuse the situation.

"Alright, alright," Beatrice replied, feigning innocence, her eyes gleaming with mischief as she shot Az a playful look with her cat-like eyes. Az, unyielding, met her gaze with a stern expression.

"But," Beatrice continued, dragging out the word, "after we're done here, I want some time with Akira."

"It's crucial we focus on the task at hand first," Az let out a sigh, meeting Beatrice's playful gaze with a serious expression. "After we're done, you can do whatever you want."

Beatrice grinned mischievously. "Oh, don't worry, I'll be the best team player," she teased, winking at Az.

Az let out an exasperated sigh but couldn't suppress a small smile that tugged at the corners of his lips. "But first, let's track down Hex," he reminded the group, his voice laced with a hint of playful exasperation.
