Chereads / Replaying the Apocalypse! / Chapter 24 - Chapter 24

Chapter 24 - Chapter 24

Leo beckoned for the ladies to take a seat once again before joining them himself.

He spent the next few hours explaining to the ladies everything that he knew about the apocalypse and the 'future'.

The sisters had many questions that Leo was unable to answer but he did his best to answer whatever questions he was capable of answering.

Luminara knew more in terms of what would/had happened in the 'future' as far as events and how they unfolded, so she filled in the gaps where she could.

But since they didn't have time to go through each and every life story, she gave them the broad strokes for the most important events and only went into detail if Leo or the sisters asked a specific question.

Leo had been thinking on it while he was out, and he told the sister's this, but part of him didn't actually know if he wanted to know the future in detail.

The more details one learned about the future, the more they focused on those particular events and failed to see anything beyond them.

What if, even after hundreds of thousands of tries, there was a different/better way of doing things and he had ignored that possibility because he was so focused on what his previous selves had done?

Of course, major events that effected the world at large would be nice to know, and Luminara gave them some details on what had/could happen but without context and understanding, even knowing the information didn't amount to much.

Sure, Leo got some understanding of how strong he needed to be and certain events he must participate in, but there wasn't anything he could do at the moment with most of the information that Luminara provided.

Since Luminara was unaware of the ability of Leo's past lives to influence the girls, Leo made sure to avoid the topic of influencing the girls' thoughts as much as possible.

As far as Luminara and the sisters were concerned, it was their own memories of the past that had compelled the girls to so quickly fall for Leo and telling them otherwise would serve no purpose.

The day quickly passed into night and as more and more time passed, the girls seemed to be less and less interested in the world as a whole and more interested in their own particular lives, achievements, and demise.

When the conversation devolved into what felt like a teenage drama gossip circle, Leo excused himself and started to prepare food for the two sisters and himself which gave him an opportunity to digest the information that Luminara had shared.

Although most of the information that Luminara shared wouldn't be useful in the near future, she had mentioned something that had caught Leo's attention.

Even though Leo was aware of the upcoming event because of his 'first' lives' memories, he was unaware of how and why the event was triggered.

And that was information pertaining to Earth's Rebirth, as it would come to be known in the future.

As far as he had remembered, the gods would slowly ramp up the difficulty on Earth until they released the new races and monsters onto the world, but according to Luminara that was true yet untrue at the same time.

According to a theory that one of his past life iterations had come to, the Earth's Rebirth was actually triggered by the humans of Earth themselves.

Yes, the strength of the animals and the difficulty of survival on Earth had slowly been increasing as time went on, but rather than a set timeframe, it was actually dictated by the strength of humanity at large.

His past lives' theory was that the quicker humanity grew stronger and proved they were capable of surviving, the quicker that Earth's Rebirth would take place.

According to Luminara, in one of his lives, Leo had thought it would be best to raise as many people as possible to a higher level and after dedicating weeks to the idea, Leo had managed to raise hundreds of people to level 10 and their class choices.

In that lifetime, Earth's Rebirth had occurred a full week ahead of 'schedule'.

On its face, that information didn't amount to much, but Leo realized that the gods were theoretically doing everything on a scale.

Humanity too weak? Give them more time.

Humanity too strong? Let's throw them to the wolves and see if it thins the herd.

Why would they even bother to care if the entire purpose of this whole thing was for their entertainment?

Wouldn't it be more entertaining to trigger Earth's Rebirth immediately following the Reckoning and watch the chaos unfold?

Was someone aside from him subtly influencing the game to give humanity a better chance whenever possible?

Or was this just another sadistic way of making humanity think they stood a chance?

Not that anyone at the current moment was aware of what was to come, aside from him and Luminara, but it just didn't make much sense to drag this out.

The more Leo thought on it, the more confused he became.

"You look like you're struggling with something, Leo. Are you alright? Care to share?" came a voice from behind him.

"It's fine Amber. I'm just thinking about some of the stuff that we're going to have to deal with in the next few weeks." he responded without taking his eyes off the meal he was cooking.

While he continued to cook, he felt a pair of arms wrap around his waist and Amber hugging him from behind.

"I'm sorry I got upset at you earlier for not telling us about your past lives and what you've been through.

Luminara told us that you've done this hundreds of thousands of times now...

That burden must be hard to carry."

Leo didn't answer and instead looked up into the night sky with a blank look upon his face before letting out a deep sigh a few seconds later.

"Honestly, I can't say if it is or isn't. I hardly remember anything beyond my first life. Right now, I'm just focused on surviving and doing my best to thrive in this hellscape.

Do I want to kill the gods and free the world? Sure, I do.

But for the current me, this is only the first time I've tried.

Maybe in the future when I've delved into the memories of my past lives then it will be more difficult to shoulder the burden of the task I've undertaken, but until then, I just want to push forward as best I can.

If anything, the idea that I've done this a million times and yet I'm no closer to fulfilling the goal of freeing humanity than I was on my first try, disheartens me a little.

Is this all worth it?

Can we even win?

These are the thoughts I can't let overtake me or my mind.

If I do, then it has all been for nothing and I'd have lost you, your sister, myself, and the rest of humanity nine hundred and ninety-nine thousand and nine hundred and ninety-nine times; for nothing."

Amber, not knowing what words would help Leo in this situation just continued to hug him in silence.

After a few tense moments of silence, Leo snapped himself out of his self-loathing and turned in Amber's embrace to face her directly.

He reached his right hand up and placed it on the side of Amber's face, who was staring up into his eyes, and caressed her cheek gently.

"I will not let all of our sacrifices be in vain. I will find a way to fight back, and win. You have my word." he said before he leaned forward and pressed his lips onto Amber's.

As their mouths locked and their tongues intertwined, Leo could feel the tension in Amber's body quickly dissipate and she slowly wilted into his arms.

Leo continued the passionate embrace until he could smell the food had finished cooking.

Only then did he release Amber from his hold, giving her a smack on the ass, and saying, "Alright dinner's ready!"
